Poster for Stand Up For Science from Change.org

Join us in sending this message to the Texas State Board of Education:

Texas students need classroom materials that are based on modern, mainstream science and prepare them to succeed in college and the jobs of the future. That means politicians must stop trying to undermine instruction on evolution and climate change. The State Board of Education must approve science textbooks that are based on sound, peer-reviewed scholarship.

Please help by signing and sharing -

If textbooks are changed to pacify these Texans it will affect the text books in your state.
This is everyone's fight! -- Thanks for your help!

Signed and noted. I remember when we didn't have to sign a petition recommending the teaching of science. The slide downward in education is thanks to the know nothing party idiots.

The problem is the same as the one in Colorado. Most people just do not follow off year or state elections. So those with wacky ideas, get elected.

S & N, thanks, my friend. It is odd that parents aren't complaining. Many years ago a woman complained about prayers in school and they were stopped. Maybe a lawsuit like that needs to happen again?

Barbara K, I remember that. I also remember that at that time people still respected the Constitution. Today I am often discouraged at even Care2 members who don't seem to have any respect for the Constitution. I would be very afraid that a lawsuit today would lose.

It is possible to teach evolution in a way of which even the hard religious right would approve. Treat good cultural values as survival traits of societies and look at physical and social evolution in parallel. It's pretty ridiculous that both sides there ignore this sort of approach.

The issue with mainstream climate-science, however, is a separate matter. I have seen a lot of stories of the peer-review process being corrupted in that field, all the way down to having prominent scientists push for the removal of an editor who allowed the publication of an article which passed peer-review, but found results contrary to their predictions. The actual science is mostly fine, but the predictions and policy-prescriptions which get bundled with it are just not science.

No1 need in Texas. BRAINS, I thought that they had already hit rock bottom(looking at legislators)
Here is the truth. SCIENCE RULES.
Give your future citizens a chance . EDUCATE them. NO MORE FAIRY STORIES.
I am forever gratefull that I was educated in a progressive country. the UK. and feel really bad for the youth of Texas etc. who do not have a chance to study scientific data.

Gladly signed. We have come a long way with our science knowledge. It always pays to question results.
I for one, am a creative evolutionist. A person can believe in God and respect science too. "He" is the ultimate scientist for creating all things and making adaptation work!
Thanks.

Gladly signed & shared! I shudder to think where our entire Nation would be if we all thought like the Texas politicians and the tea party there! There would be no such thing as real science- a type of pseudo science would dominate all our schools and we would not have the advancement in technology and medical research that we've made in the last decade! Forget people like Steve Jobs and other free thinkers like Darwin and Einstein who depended on an environment of free thinking not censorship and "give me that old time religion" ideology reminiscent of the Scopes trial that Texas seems closer to becoming every day! If I had a young, school age child, I certainly wouldn't want to live in Texas.

Have to agree with Avril - TX needs more brains...there isn't a whole one between the fanatcs and the GOPTP combined. No wonder they don't know anything about science. Like what goes up must come down...preferably on their heads.

Bahá’ís reject the notion that there is an inherent conflict between science and religion. Instead they believe science and religion are two systems of knowledge. Each operating within it's own sphere, they are fundamentally in harmony, mutually reinforcing, and are both necessary to advance civilization.

The Faith teaches that religion without science soon degenerates into superstition and fanaticism, while science without religion becomes merely the instrument of crude materialism – and unchecked material progress will never lead to true prosperity.
