Prilosec & Nexium: Increased Risk of Fatal Heart Problems Being Probed...Slowly

Health & Wellness  (tags: Prilosec, Nexium, heartburn, heartburn prescriptions, FDA, AstraZeneca, pharamceuticals )

RC

The FDA plays down concerns, as does AstraZeneca, the pharmceutical that makes the drugs. Doctors and patients urged to "continue to prescribe and use the drugs as before" until the FDA completes a 3 month study.

Thanks Cate. Unfortunately, TUMS or ROLAIDS isn't the answer either because they give your system an over abundance of Calcium which the Kidney can't digest which then causes "Kidney Stones". They are the most painful thing you can go through next to child birth so I would not suggest eating TUMS all day. If you do, new studies show that Vitamin B-6 and Magnesium helps to dissolve the excess calcium which allows it to pass through the Kidney. Please...I found out all of this the HARD way and now have enough Kidney Stones for a necklace. Be very careful with taking too much Calcium and its better to change your diet until your stomach heals. To much coffee, pop, acid drinks, spicy foods and eating late at night, all hard habits to break.

My physician recently prescribed Nexium with no mention of a possible risk of having a heart attack. Sounds irresponsibile to me.... the only place for medication like these is in the garbage. I will just continue to monitor my diet. Thank You Cate for the HUGE HEADS UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ron has good points. The diet is the place to start. I helped myself by starting to take Nu-Zymes about 3-4 years ago. They have the specfic enzymes for sugars, carbs, lactose, proteins fats, and fiber, starches. I began to notice real changes through the first months and after a year- I rarely ever have any upset now. Medicine tries to fix a symptom and instead can become a cause in another problem. Thanks Ron. and Cate- I do know people who take Prilosec.

Hi Lee, yes, I took the purple pill for two years and my Doctor didn't tell my it may "kill" me either because the "DRUG COMPANY" likely didn't tell him. Their "high paid" sales people don't tell you anything that isn't is the "sales" brochure. My sister also took it and "died from a heart attack" 4 years ago at the very young age of 56. Hmmmm...makes ya wonder doesn't it? How do you ever prove such a case going up against the highest paid lawyers in the country, because they have "ALL OUR MONEY"!!! GIRD or Acid Reflux Disease effects millions of people in this country and now the "Magic Pill" is a killer too. Doesn't that just figure!!

I have heard Nexium, which I took for a few months, referred to as "purple crack".
I have been taking Prilosec for almost 3 years and if I stop it gets so bad it feels like I am going to have a heart attack......2 trips to the hospital already thinking I was having a heart attack, their solution, take 2 pills instead of one a day. I can go up to 3 days without taking one, but by then it is starting to get bad....and like many, no health insurance due to pre-existing conditions.....vascular disease, a family curse!! Already had a triple bypass and a corotid clean out, but thankful, never a heart attack.......amazes me, I have worked out my whole life to try to stay healthy, read labels, watch fat intake, and the arteries still clog up!!
So what do you do, as my diet is pretty good?

Well, like I said in another thread, you'll just have to quite eating Charles...like I did. Maybe they'll find us both in our recliners with a half eaten Polish Sausage. [grin] It really is a very serious problem across the US and if we don't adjust our eating habits, its going to continue, though some conditions are genetic prone. My father used baking soda most of his life and made sure to drink plenty of water with it, but that not good for you either. He had an old southern saying, "cures what ales ya, and if ya don't have nothin, it'll give it to ya". He was right!! The cure may be worse than the condition.

I have gallbladder disease, that is the basic cause of my acid reflux. I also have some severe allergies and have been old to avoid surgery if at all possible (anesthesia allergy) so I take 40 mg prilosec daily and have for 11 years. Won't stop as I have no desire to develop esophageal cancer.

i have taken Prisolec for a long time. I was switched to the generic when it came on the market. I have no choice in this matter. Reflux is very serious without med.... I had heart attacks and open heart surgery for 4 clogged arteries in 1992. At this time I believe that years of smoking cigarettes and a unhealthy diet cause my problem. No heart damage to speak of and I take no meds for the heart, except a low dose aspirin once a day. I will continue to take the generic for Prisolec until my dr tells me to stop and prescribes another med that will allow me to eat without constant misery. Each person has to decide what to do, depending on how serious their problem and their dr's advise. It is aggravating, worrisome and confusing when it seems all meds and so many foods are declared 'unsafe' weekly or monthly. For myself, who must take meds, I'd just as soon not know about the danger until there is a mon-dangerous substitute for it!.....Thanks, Cate for the info. People who can manage without this med can profit from your post. I will ask my dr, but I really don't have a choice at this time and he will remind me of this fact..i have no problem as long as I take my daily cap.

And so after 3 months the irreverent FDA clowns will once more sit on a much sanitized report that won't point fingers at the guilty parties. Broken record, broken record, broken record broken record...

Folks get ye to a public library if you can, theny carry a copy of the latest Physicians Desk Reference forget those lumpen proletariat doctors they were bought and sold the moment they matriculated in medical school!

Hi Marian, Privacid may be a better solution for you. We haven't heard anything bad about that one yet, but I would sure consult your Doctor to see if there isn't an alternative.

NEXIUM IS ANOTHER MEDICATION REPACKAGED. THERE IS A COURT CASE PENDING. NEXIUM IN THE END ABSOLUTELY RUINS YOUR STOMACH AS DO ALL THE OTHER PRESCRIPTIONS FOR ARTHRITIS. THEN YOU GO ON STOMACH MEDS AND THEY CONTINUE TO DO YOU IN. WATCH OUT FOR WEIGHT GAIN. OF COURSE THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES AND DOCTORS HAVE ALL THIS INFORMATION . . .
