Ever try to delete your Facebook account? It's next to impossible. Here's why.

That would be California, folks...LOL...and I tried..and I can't. You can easily deactivate yopur account, but like the title of Dali's most famous painting, Facebook retains "The Persistence of Memory."

Hotel California is getting quite full. I think I live in South America now. At least that's how I finally managed the account.

Interesting article, Cate. I was considering opening a Facebook account and now... I probably won't.

Facebook is of the devil, and I'm
not being totally tongue-in-cheek
when I say that.
Interesting that they call it "The
Hotel California". When I was a kid
growing up in suburban Los Angeles,
we lived close to a state menta hospital,
Metropolitan State in Norwalk, and we
commonly referred to it as "The Hotel
California".
I've never had any desire to join Facebook,
now, I'll avoid it like the plague.
Thanks, Cate.

I've heard this before. Facebook is too public for me.

Thanks Cate

Noted. And the "2504 Steps to closing your Facebook account” (www.stevenmansour.com). is a very fun and interesting read.

Are the tracks we leave behind us testament of our stupidity or genius?

I don't belong to those other sites, thank goodness. Now, the question begs of this site, Care2 and what are the results of leaving Care2 and having all of your info, comments and so forth. taken out, deleted - are there any "permanent" records, tidbits left hiding somewhere in Care2... Anyone know...

TY, Cate.

The same is true of 'Your Space' and several other social networks...but not we are assured Care2 who will delete your profile just like that...so I am told.

Noted. I have Facebook and use it to cross-post many petitions and news from here. I have never had a problem, but of course am only there to be close to the kids.

Noted. I did join Facebook. It is a cinch to "cancel" the account, but you really do not get to leave. I also made the mistake of joining a dating service and two years later I still get email telling me "someone wonderful" has viewed my profile. I joined YourSpace at the request of a friend and I can't for the life of me figure out its workings! LOL. Staying there perpetually is what I deserve for not having a good enough reason to join in the first place. Thanks, Cate...misery does love company, LOL.

You would find with just a little research that anything you post on a site becomes that sites property, Care2 included. You can run, you can hide, but you can NEVER leave. Even if Care2 deletes your account, they still keep everything you post. You can't access it, but it can be used against you at a later date if/or when Care2 sees fit.
Beware what you post online, it could come back to bite you in the ass.

I joined Facebook at the request of a friend. Then my friends started getting e-mails from me with questions to answer. I think it was called FanBox which I never joined. I traced it back to Facebook and found that they had gotten into my personal address book and sent these things to my friends. I flipped out and sent them a scathing letter. Evidently these things go on. I left Facebook but as you say, you are never really away from them. I set up a seperate e-mail account for work after that. Now if I receive anything from Face Book or FanBox, I delete it without even reading it. Learned a valuable lesson there.
