Well, hell, I'd like a new career, but geeze, I don't think I'm cut out to be a gaming surveillance professional, a manicurist or a home health aide. Guess I'll continue creative and poor!

You will see links at the end of the first slide show to the other two. Informative and fun - and who knew some of the jobs even existed?

Yep, I'm in a frisky mood this morning. Seriously, hubby said a friend told him they can't get enough people to handle the repos these days. It's really sad. Law enforcement - police and sheriff - is another open field, although I could never see myself in those type of jobs...being the intellectual I like to think I am.

But if the sit-cha-a-sion gets bad enough, I'll sell oranges by the freeway if necessary...

Thanks for this information Cate. I'll continue to stay home. Had to retire this year from my job of 17 years to raise my 3 grandchildren. Noted with thanks.

WOW! I found a new career, but I don't think I'd manage at my age to fulfill the requirements. If I were younger, I think I'd jump in and go for it. At this age and the way I feel today, the rocking chair is looking good. I'll just have to stay with EMT and substituting and hope we can make ends meet.

My career (anyting)days are over. I am already an unpaid Home Health Aide to my husband--real OJT! I think I'll just keep caring for him while both of us steadily deteriorate.

Marion LMAO....the majority of my career was spent in law enforcement/criminal justice/natural resources. Not all law enforcement personnel are inbred sadistic idiots. Some of us got out of it (or were forced out) while we still had our ethics and integrity--if not our health. There are still 'good' law enforcement personnel out there--it's finding them that's the hard part. :)

Hey Terrie...didn't mean to say law enforcement folks are idiots. I meant to imply I am more of a desk person (couch potato) than a physically active person - although there are desk jobs. Law enforcement has rigid tests and requirements, and I have a few family members in the field who are VERY sharp. I guess that field can be corrupt like the rest. I found politics and bureaucracy in the education and corporate fields. I had to leave too for the same reasons. LOL Working for myself at home has been the most rewarding, empowering and liberating. I don't think I could ever go back to working for someone else, but I know better than to say "never."

Take good care of your husband...it's a worthwhile job.

Thanks for the article, Cate....I've passed it along to my nieces and nephews who are all in college right now. Maybe they can learn something from it....and play it smart in their careers!

You may wish to pass on the repo job, Marion. I dated a guy who did that and went out on a few 'runs' with him and, believe me, a couple of people really DID make us run....people don't take kindly to losing their transportation, whether they have made their payments or not....It's no wonder they have trouble finding people to fill that particular job.....

I am in college, I almost went to school to be a mnicurest, but I have tremors in my hands, and I might have filed someones finger tips away, I am not cut out for that! You know I think job searches can be fun....I have a part time job, while I am in college, and I have an internship starting soon where I will be working with a brain tumor organization...but as far as how I will ever support myself and my spending habits, when I am out of college and looking for a full time job...who knows where I will be?! Not me! Thanks for that info Cate, I will mull it over in my head.

If "leather working" jobs are on the decline, hopefully that means "FAUX leather working" jobs are on the rise!!! See? Sometimes the glass IS half full ! Thx, Cate

I just read the other day, that the need for a college education, as it was in my youth, is declining. Employers, at least the ones left here in the states, are looking for trade school graduates with emphasis on specifics rather than the usual four year degree covering everything that you will never use again.

I found this interesting and perhaps profound as the entrance of students into colleges and universities is on the rise.

Cate -- looks like the medical/dental profession is the place to be -- as an educator (classroom and
p.e. teacher at the elementary level) I never saw a salary close to these -- our priorities in this country are all screwed up -- why aren't educators paid more for what they do? -- hopefully things
will change when Barack takes over the reins of state!

I heartily agree, Michael. Now you have to have a Masters degree to become a teacher but with the salaries the way they are, who would spend all of those years in school at quite a cost to obtain that degree. Teachers are some of the most important jobs in the world but paid some of the lowest salaries...Absolutely shameful, IMHO.....

I take care of my 90 year old mother, Deborah, so I know the drill....lol

Oh bother, I don't live close enough to the zoo for my new dream job.
Would so love to comb the tigers fur, but will have to be happy just
watching our local village animals walk by. At least by living next to
a stream we get to see a lot of wildlife.
