Cutting: Will It Ease the Pain?

Business  (tags: Wall Street, Federal Reserve, interest rate, Dow Jones, Bank of America, economic crisis, banking )

Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke says the economic outlook is growing worse. On Wall Street: a 330-point slide in the Dow Jones Industrials. Bank of America lost 18% of its value today. Will a cut in the interest rate stem the flow of red ink?

I think a big fat spliff and a bourbon and ginger over ice are the only things that will ease MY pain...where is it going? How much will the Fed have to cut interest rates to really help? And you know those cuts ain't gonna trickle down to us peons...we'll see prices and rates rise...

For those of us who can not afford gold ...

TY Cate
Bartering may become very useful.

Stock up on bartering items such as;
cigarettes, alcohol, 'chocolate' (my addiction), and commodities that may become unafordable to us loosing everything, or may become unavailable for a short time...

"Bernanke praised the passage of the Treasury Department's sweeping $700 billion bailout for the financial system, the Troubled Asset Relief Program."

Yeah, right. Give all the cronnies enough escape monies and let the rest hang out to dry.
Like they really believed this would help the working classes.

FDR, even with all of his efforts to balance the country, couldn't do it. WWII was the salvation of this country. We're in a war now however, so someone better think fast.

Well, I'd give a couple of eyeteeth and my right arm for FDR now, Louise, He saved the American farms and put millions to work when private industry couldn't - or wouldn't. It's awful how the consicenceless super-rich and powerful affect the lives of the majority!

Cate i will join! Will go to the whisky bar now and check what will be the best cure!
A good old scotch is the only thing that will make this work! It's awful how the consicenceless super-rich and powerful affect the lives of the majority! 400 richest people in the USA have more than 150 Million americans.... And guess who will benefit from this crisis? The rich or the poor?

What is good about this is that the rich have fallen in love with socialism for the rich....
Lets share the 700 Billion..... I am sure that Mr Paulson will be a fair guy for this job...LOL!!

I keep hearing that the best thing we can do for ourselves is to
pay off credit card debt. I question that though. Is it the best
thing for the consumer or the Banks? As our dollar is devalued,
the interest being charged on credit cards is actually worth less.
Credit cards debt is (usually) collateral free. If you lose your
job and cannot pay, other than nasty phone calls, there isn't
much they can do about it. Perhaps hanging onto all available
cash is the wiser course to follow.

Thanks Cate.

Thank you for the article, Ombretta. We all have to take the lessons of the past - especially the Great Depression, and use them wisely. We must keep our faith, while try to keep some savings that are not in the stock market, plus only spend money on the necessities. Simplify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Bring on the economic collapse as soon as possible as this will be the only thing that will wake more people up to the scam being orchestrated by the banksters .Hopefully there will be enough people that wake up to round up the banksters and give them life sentences for drimes against humanity. Sadly if the above comments are a reflection of the majority then nothing will happen as the majority will just get drunk and drown themselves in self pity while blaming others for their lack of positive action to fix the problem.

The Fed caused the depression in the 1920-30...... guess who is causing this one???? the prize for the correct answer is a 5 gallon plastic drum of the finest rotgut I can brew in my shed.......

terms and conditions apply, (must be over 99, and have your mothers written permission) under the law as applicable in Outer Mongolia.......George Bush to be final arbiter....no correspondence to be entered into....or George will send one of his "finest" to interview the terrorist concerned.....

Sure. Cut interest rates. Discourage saving. Encourage more debt. Cater to the Gotta-Have-It-NOW-bunch of greedy egotists who want to be ahead of the Joneses. Create more bankruptcies. Not paying off your credit card doesn't save the economy. The bankers are laughing their head off. The Fed is printing more money to jumpstart inflation. The world banking conspiracy has been around at least since long before the Fed was created. Lower interest rates? Sure. Got cavities in your teeth? Eat more sugar. Anybody remember the disco song, "The World Is A Madhouse?

Time to sound the Alarm! as I posted in my group:

I just went here: http://www.johnmccain.com/

and I clicked on "contact us" and left a message. It says

"If you don't stop Sarah Palin from enciting violence in an already angry crowd that is shouting "terrorist" and "Kill him" and harm comes to Obama, Sarah and McCain will be held accountable. The riots that ensue will be absolutely apocalyptic for this country. She has crossed the line."

I'm asking all of you who will, to do the same. This has gone way too far. She is in effect, starting violence because of the state of affairs the country is in. It would be bad enough, if we didn't have the financial problems we have with people out of work and frustrated and angry, but to do this is asking for a travesty.

In response to Marian E - credit card debt is the price you pay (and some more) for 'stuff' you have already had and couldn't originally pay for. It’s still your dept. If you won't or don't pay then ‘they’ take your house or your car and if you have neither and you still don’t pay your debt then you lose your self respect. To ignore you debt and not pay the retailer for the goods they supplied in good faith. I think we used to call that theft. If you owe the money then it’s not your cash!!

And, of course, if you don't pay your credit cards on time (and at least the minimum payment) your credit rating plummets.

I agree with Lynnzie (heck, we even have almost the same name!) - we should pay our bills. In the end, the losses incurred through debtors defaulting on their bills is passed along to the rest of us. And as someone who always pays her bills on time and in full - I don't really appreciate having to pay more for consumer goods and other things because of those who are less frugal (always understanding that there are, of course, some people who are in that position through no fault of their own).

The maddening thing is that we haven't seen lower interest rates as consumers when the Fed lowers the rate to the banks. But that is rather pare for the course right now.

They can cut the interest rate to zero and it will not filter down to us, we will still pay too much for that mortgage. Anyone notice how much the price for a barrel of oil has fallen, has anyone seen the price at the pump fall as swiftly and in the same percentage? Never seems to get to us. I can't drink--my Great Depression so I think I will go get some friends and have a $400K pedicure instead.

Thank you Tsandi! You have a brilliant idea. I have been thinking the same about how they are intentionally lying and stirring the crowd to mob mentality.
They will get Obama assassinated or his family.

This is not even a fine line anymore, this should be criminal and it is.
If we spewed such hateful fear mongering and lies, we land behind bars.

How can this be allowed to continue, and now McCain is pouring more fuel on the fire.

I will write him and several others now that you mention it.

Their rhetoric has crossed any line of endangerment.

This is dangerous, and Palin winks, thinks she is cute while McCain with his war mentality believes he is in a war, not an election debate.

Shows how sick the pair is, and their mobs.

Tonight Olberman pointed out that McCain and his wife also have ties through friends to Ayers...
Interesting isn't it?

I loved the debate when Obama brought up 911 and Iraq not being involved.
He had a few very concise lines he delivered.

But McCain and Palin are putting his whold family in grave danger.
