Tainted Pharmaceuticals: The Puerto Rican Pipeline

Health & Wellness  (tags: pharmaceuticals, FDA, Puerto Rico, drug manufacture, tainted medicine, quality control )

Much hay is being made, in today's news, of tainted pharmaceuticals produced in Puerto Rico. This article is dated February 10th. While the focus of the FDA's pharma regulatory failures has been China, we have problems here at home, too.

Now here's an article just published today, and you'll find similar reports all over the web. Big Pharma's Pills Contaminated with Machine Parts at Pill Factories The article featured in this news story actually lists the top 20 best-selling US drugs made in Puerto Rican factories with quality control problems.

TY Cate & Charly, this is noted. I feel we the public of the US should be looking at our own country for our problems to fix, before going to other countries to help them.

WE AMERICANS FIND THE CHEAPEST PLACES TO MAKE AND DISTRIBUTE OUR DRUGS WITH THE FACT THAT SAFTY CONCERNS ARE NOT THESE PLACES MAIN PRIORITY IT IS THE MONEY THEY GET. THEY MAKE THE MEDICINES IN THESE SUBSTANDARD PLACES, YET CHARGE SOMETIMES ANYWHERE FROM $300 TO $500 A BOTTLE FOR THE PRESCRIPTION. THEY SAY THE MONEY GOES FOR MORE RESEARCH. I BELIEVE OUR SAFETY SHOULD COME BEFORE MORE RESEARCH. EXSPEACIALLY IF THEY ARE GOING TO CHARGE THESE KIND OF PRICES FOR THE MERCHANDISE.

Thank you both for the articles!

I am in agreement with Barb and Robin. Bring all our pharma production back home and then crack down on them pertaining to product safety and testing! People's health and safety should always come before PROFIT and RESEARCH. They need to re-research what's on the market NOW--does anyone besides me LISTEN to the side-effects that the ads try to run through as fast as they can so you practically can't catch them all in one sitting?? Now why on earth would I want to take a medication that quite possibly could KILL me?? Or give me another disease that is more severe or lethal than the ailment I am taking the medication for????? NO THANK YOU! They need to do more and LONGER studies of these medications BEFORE putting them on market.

The cost-cutting needs to stop, the outsourcing needs to stop and the bottomline needs to stop dictating how fast a drug gets to market. It is NOT 'research' that all that money is going to---it is to CEO's paychecks and portfolios. Count on it.

But much of big pharmas products are useless or have dangerous side affects, or even downright lethal. There are more ways to health than patronizing big pharmas dangerous massively expensive offerings.....and it is so readily available...Diet and exercise is the starting point.....unprocessed foods, locally grown organic fruit and vegetables, and instead of pill popping doctors, find a competent Naturepath, and try a healthy natural way of life.
Many of us are carrying far too much weight, eat and drink the commonly available garbage, don't exercise, then wonder why we feel so bad and depressed....then we pop big pharmas useless offerings...to cure us????? then those of us who resort to nicotine and illegal drugs only compounds the problems of our health. It is not rocket science, just a little common sense. It is education not medication we need most. Learn to meditate,it is so inexpensive and helps with stress, health and a feeling of wellbeing.
And big pharmas paranoia about natural supplements and therapies....they worry about adverse affects or fatalities that might happen, yet world wide they HAVE killed thousands and thousands of people... it is not our health that they are worried about, it is the $billions, they are worried about if we get smart....
