"authentic by-product fur from the rabbit industry" !!!!
"remnants of rabbit fur left over from the Chinese garment industry" !!!

Dear AniMaeChi Kunsu,
Thank you for writing to us regarding the fur cat toys sold at PetSmart. We wholeheartedly share your concern about cats and dogs being used in Chinese manufacturing, and we take very seriously our corporate responsibility to help end this practice.

That is why a third-party independent inspector regularly inspects the plants that manufacture our cat toys to certify that only the acceptable faux fur or authentic by-product fur from the rabbit industry is being used. This audit process certifies that there are no products being substituted anywhere in the process. In addition to these regular inspections, our independent contractor makes unannounced follow up inspections of each facility, and we spot check our toys to ensure they contain only the right materials. Each of these suppliers clearly understands that failure of any inspection will result in the loss of PetSmart's business.

The fur cat toys offered in our stores are made using only either manmade (faux) fur, or a smaller portion that are from remnants of rabbit fur left over from the Chinese garment industry, which purchases the fur as a by-product of the food industry in China. The process by which fake fur toys are made varies greatly from how those with authentic fur are made, and occurs through separate vendors.

That leaves the issue of whether using rabbit fur is the right thing to do. We looked long and hard at the issue, and learned that because rabbits are a common source of food in China and in Europe (much as cattle are in this country), and because we use only fur that is a by-product of this industry, our production of real fur toys does nothing to change the number of rabbits raised for commercial purposes. In fact, as a large company purchasing these items, we can help influence Chinese industry for the better by insisting that all suppliers use humane practices, something we remain committed to doing.

In short, we made the decision to sell a limited supply of real fur toys only after determining that we could put in place appropriate safeguards to ensure humane practices and still meet the demands of our consumers, who tell us their pets overwhelmingly prefer - and get a great deal of enjoyment from - real fur toys.

We hope this addresses your concerns and clarifies our position on the issue. We appreciate your input and thank you again for sharing your concerns with us.

Thank you AniMaeChi for posting your reply, I agree with you that they just don't get it.

Dogs and cats would not miss authentic fur, there are enough non-cruelty toys to choose from to keep them amused.

I say non-cruelty because I do not believe that this rabbit fur is a bi-product. They are claiming that they are cut offs from the garment industry, do you know how much a designer would pay for a rabbit pelt? Are PetSmart really getting those off cuts? I doubt it, the Chinese get a crammed cage full of rabbits, skin them alive and then sell them to PetSmart cheap, making PetSmart 'think' they must be bi-products because of the low price. How much does a rabbit cost anyway? $1,000's? No, they are probably just like their dogs and cats they are most likely wild or stolen pets.

Dogs and cats are just as much as a food source in China, what makes a dog or a cat any different to a rabbit in China? Is PetSmart really that stupid or are they just closing their eyes to the truth so they can continue making a profit?

Quote - "we take very seriously our corporate responsibility to help end this practice". Really? Apart from 'regularly' sending in an auditor who probably tips them off beforehand to ensure that he doesn't have to do much work, what are they doing to 'end this practice'?

Even if all that Eric says is true, they still get their cut-offs from China, a country where there are NO animal welfare laws and NO regulations regarding 'humane' slaughter, making the words bi-product' irrelevant as ALL of the real fur on their shelves came from animals who suffered terrible living conditions, inadequate care and a painful death.

Eric at PetSmart needs to get himself an education.

Signed and noted, thanks Jill.

... and let's not stop at the FUR in FASHION !!

Fa$hion is a $ickne$$ -- to waste energy on such a sickne$$ in times when humankind is in a dire crisis ( Climate Holocaust, global pollution => Cancer epedemic, ... ) seems highly neurotic and criminally insane (to me, at least).

compare The Story of Stuff (2007)

" If human beings are ever to become free and to cease feeding industry by pathological consumption, a radical change in the economic system is necessary: we must put an end to the present situation where a healthy economy is possible only at the price of unhealthy human beings. The Task is to construct a healthy economy for healthy people. " -- Erich Fromm (1900-1980) in "To Have or to Be? A new blueprint for mankind" (1976)

Noted, tweeted, shared, wrote letter, signed petitions and tweeted and shared videos. After watching the videos, I am really depressed. Can't understand why we need to wear fur. Fake fur will do if we want fur. Why do we have to steal it from the animals?

Dear Sir,
The most recent population estimate for the United States is more than 25 years old and there are no population estimates for Canada or Mexico.
According to 2001 statistics provided from actual sales of hunting permits, over 40,000 bobcats are still being killed each year. This figure does not include all the bobcats killed by hunters who do not buy licenses nor report their kills. Less than 3% of our population are hunters but they kill over 100 million animals each year for sport.
They are also trapped in the wild with cruel leg-hold traps for their fur, which is made into garments. More than 53,000 skins are traded internationally every year and the level has increased five-fold since 1995. The United States is the largest exporter.
The illegal trade in endangered and threatened lynx species and bobcat skins cannot be distinguished even by forensic analysis from those of other lynx species, including the critically endangered Iberian lynx, and other endangered and threatened lynx species including the Eurasian lynx, Canada lynx and Mexican bobcat.
Stop exporting bobcat skins. There hasn't been a population estimate in over 25 years, therefore you couldn't possible know if the cat is endangered, or when it might become endangered.
