Do you know that many vegetarian children cannot get lunch at school? At a time when American children need more vegetarian meals, the National School Lunch Program does not include any provision for plant-based foods.

THIS STORY WAS PASSED TO ME BY MY FRIEND ANIMALSPIRIT M WHO RECOGNIZED IT AS IMPORTANT WHEN HER FRIEND NANCY B. SENT IT TO HER, PLEASE THANK NANCY FOR THE INFO AND FOR ANIMALSPIRIT FOR WANTING US ALL INFORMED. I think it is important that children who choose a plant-based diet have that option at lunch. Many are choosing this diet for their health and many also choose this diet for their concern with the welfare of animals. It is not right that a child go to school and be expected to sacrifice their health and/or their morals. Isn't this one of the reasons that we so strongly defend the rights of children to be protected in our schools?

Thanks much my dear friend Morgan,
Below is my letter to our government regarding Public/private school menus USDA:

We need to think about improving vegetarian options for our children in school....

This is the beginning of the obesity situation and providing good nutrition as well as good knowledge on the subject can help many children who later on in life become our insurance liabilities, life long health issues...

About time, schools went with the times. You should be able to get a vegetarian meal at any school or restaurant!

Hi and thank you, Morgan. My daughter taught in school, and parents often requested that the administration refrain from serving their kids various kinds of meat due to religious practices, etc. A vegetarian diet is the answer for schools that have to comply with these requests. Great idea!

By the way, the story excerpt that you sent to my e-mail, you can only get to the Care2 news story by clicking on "comment," otherwise, I go straight to the original article and miss the opportunity to come to this page and note your story.

That is just wrong! There have been vegetarian meals in our schools in Finland at least for the past ten years. I work as a teacher and as I'm a vegan, I often bring my own lunch. But many of the veggie dishes are also suitable for vegans.

Well, that's just sad, not even salads! I know fresh vegetables are the largest part of my grocery bill. I also know that when I went to school, eons ago, it was noodles and pasta mostly with some mystery meat thrown in.

I don't how they are going to handle school lunches up here but all hell has broken loose over them. It has become a collection fight between schools and parents and kids are in the middle. Some of the schools in our state offer salads but not all. Plus I don't trust the food. They were not buying locally, just going for cheap prices. If my kids were vegetarians, I think I would be buyint the makings myself so I knew they were washed and cleaned right. Schools have become lazy lazy lazy. They don't care except those schools that forbide peanut butter. Only because they are afraid of a lawsuit if their kids swaps sandwiches. Schools arent' staffed to chase down allergies at a lunchroom with over a hundred kids. Ya don't think they would go to the trouble of fresh veg and fruits and making sure they are safe for the kids

I'm not a vegetarian or vegan, but why not include choices for them? They have to eat too.

Also the cost would be lower as veggies are cheaper to buy inventory wise than meats. Also I would not feed my cat meats such as are used in school cafeterias, to much processing, and additives. No wonder most kids have ADD & ADHD !!!! All that crap in their food.
