NOW, we overlook people who've spent YEARS of hard work, promoting peace, struggling to protect their subjugated fellow citizens, risked (or were subjected to ) incarceration . . .

Because we HOPE he'll do something???

What a slap in the face!

I am SO disgusted that one of the last things I believed in -- the Nobel Peace Prize -- which has honored so many deserving recipients, has sunk this low . . . and it was decided two months into his presidency!

hm... maybe it's Nobel for winning US presidency???
but seriously - I thought you have to DO SOMETHING to get it
I don't want to say that all what he does is wrong but.... I'm not so optimistic about Obama as a year ago
and the worse is what Carole says: there are people who really deserved the prize, Obama did not...

A message from Michael Moore:

"Congratulations President Obama on the Nobel Peace Prize -- Now Please Earn it!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Dear President Obama,

How outstanding that you've been recognized today as a man of peace. Your swift, early pronouncements -- you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you've eliminated that useless term "The War on Terror," you've put an end to torture -- these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.

But...

The irony that you have been awarded this prize on the 2nd day of the ninth year of our War in Afghanistan is not lost on anyone. You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush's Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now. That's what a true man of peace would do.

There is nothing wrong with you doing what the last guy failed to do -- capture the man or men responsible for the mass murder of 3,000 people on 9/11. BUT YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH TANKS AND TROOPS. You are pursuing a criminal, not an army. You do not use a stick of dynamite to get rid of a mouse.

The Taliban is another matter. That is a problem for the people of Afghanistan to resolve -- just as we did in 1776, the French did in 1789, the Cubans did in 1959, the Nicaraguans did in 1979 and the people of East Berlin did in 1989. One thing is certain through all revolutions by people who wish to be free -- they ultimately have to bring about that freedom themselves. Others can be supportive, but freedom can not be delivered from the front seat of someone else's Humvee.

You have to end our involvement in Afghanistan now. If you don't, you'll have no choice but to return the prize to Oslo.

Yours,
Michael Moore

My thanks to those who've commended me for my honesty.

Honesty is something I wish we had more of in this government -- and I respect those who perceive hypocrisy, and decry it when it promotes those undeserving, while ignoring those who should command illumination.

Perhaps, if the award had been renamed to the "Nobel Hopeful Rhetoric Award," (which would not require any actual demonstration of carrying-out) -- I could have given him the "Yeah, nobody said it better" prize.

For the amnesiacs:

Obama's Incredible Record Of Betrayal

I've lost count of how many times Barack Obama has claimed he was going to change the way Washington does business, how he was going to cut off the role of the big corporate lobbyists, stop government use of secrecy to cover for illegal actions, make government more accountable and transparent, stop corruption, and end cronyism. The record indicates that all these are part of the Big Lie--a concerted effort to deceive his own followers and the nation. Only the establishment media is silent about this growing dichotomy. None of the White House press corps dares question him in public about his backtracking. The Republican opposition (who backed these same evil practices when they were in power) has taken notice, but not as much as principled liberals who feel betrayed by his promises of change. This week I'll start off by reviewing the magnitude of the hypocrisy and deception. It's an impressive listing.

I'm a bit surprised... I certainly did not expect Obama to get the Nobel Prize for Peace, perhaps somebody else on their "list"...

I liked Moore's comment above when he said "Congratulations President Obama on the Nobel Peace Prize -- Now Please Earn it!"

I enjoyed Naomi Klein's comments from the video in the Visit Link.

How does the president of a country currently fighting two wars, one of them illegal and contemplating a third while arming other countries to the teeth get the Nobel Prize for Peace? Over the years the Nobel Peace Prize has steadily been devalued if you look at many of the recent recipients; they might as well have given it to Bush and Cheney. We've have surely fallen "through the looking glass".

The wars in the Middle East has bugger all to do with human rights. It is to protect the oil/gas corridors. if Washington actually called a spade 'a spade' then Obama would not be losing so much 'face'.

And the call to the wold to be nuke free? When the USA flatly refuses to de-nuke itself?

And Obama's non-seeing of the Dalai Lama - but instead putting this holy man on the back burner because Obama does not want to upset the Chinese?

And the caving in to corporate greed?

I agree with you 100% Carol - he does NOT deserve the Nobel peace prize. I did more 'actively' during the Apartheid years here in South Africa than this man has done in the few months he has been president.

Okay, I'm on my way now to demand that Obama gives me the prize instead - even though it is a few years late..... LOL

Yep Carole got to agree ...Its just as Obama himself has admitted...he didn't deserve it, and didn't match up to the past recipients.
He stood by silent while the Gaza massacre carried on day after day. Job well done my a**! AND what change has occurred in Middle East? Nothing for Peace just a lot of meaningless rhetoric in Cairo for those ready and willing to be Hypnotised. And the Iraq photos? Hidden safely from critical eyes...no justice there..after all what justice can Iraqis expect from US?! Israeli NUKES hidden by him also Afghanistan bloodshed, Pakistan Bloodshed and the list goes on and on...ooops forgot to mention Leonard Peltier still in jail..30 yrs now no evidence, bit closer to home that one.

Yes he inherited a mess he knew that, he also knew that if he chose the same old individuals to "Help" him he would be in the same old stew. He is not in charge, the banksters are.

Maybe that Prize will force the US gov to live up to it? what d'you think...I have a dream!

Maybe Tony Bliar should be next! HaHaHa...sorry that was a bit sick, except that he IS also running around as Middle East Peace Mucker.

The Elderly and Disabled will not be getting a Cost of Living Raise to help pay for the Bailouts..... Just wait until the individual's who are able to still work get the new Tax Rates, because Everybody is going to help to pay for those Bailouts.

In regards to the Banks, Jimmy Carter made it Mandatory to give bad Loans and to give Credit Cards to individual's who couldn't pay the Banks back. Bill Clinton made it even easier to get Loans and Credit Cards.

And it was Democrat Bill Clinton who signed the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999, thereby repealing the safeguards set up in 1933 to prevent another Great Depression and allowed investment banks, insurance companies and commercial banks to co-mingle America’s savings in what was to be soon the greatest destruction of wealth on a scale never before seen.

Now we have Obama appointing Czars that won't have to be approved by Congress and appointing individual's who were guilty of Tax Evasion, the most notable is the head of the Treasury Department. Talk about choosing a Coyote to be the overseer of the Chicken Coop.....

And so the Nobel Prize Committee gave Obama the Prize? That is just insane.....We need to stop the Socialism and turn this Country back to the Democracy that it once was. I am sorry, but the current Democratic Party does not care about Democracy.....

The Peace Price is for what is done, not what is hoped to be done.:

Warmonger Wins Peace Prize

By Paul Craig Roberts

The non-cynical can say that the Nobel committee is seizing on Obama's rhetoric to lock him into the pursuit of peace instead of war. We can all hope that it works. But the more likely result is that the award has made "War is Peace" the reality.

One more way he is like the other useless pathetic [past] President, Jimmy [Peanut Brained] Carter. I guess you qualify for this by associating with known terrorists, giving up information gathering tactics to our enemies, apologizing to the world for the arrogance of this country bailing them out of World Wars, protecting freedoms, assisting in catastrophes, etc., bowing to heads of state of Muslim countries while barely acknowledging one of our strongest allies' head of state, appointing tax cheats to cabinet posts, burying future generations in massive debt, oh, man, the list goes on and on...I'm getting sick just thinking about it... The liberal world must be able to see light now that they have crawled so far up Obama's butt.

From Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Peace_Prize

"...awarding the prize to President Barack Obama early in his presidential term has generated debate about the timing of the award in relation to the recipient's actual achievements, particularly in light of President Obama being office for less than two weeks before the February 1 nomination deadline, although it is not known who nominated him, when, or why, and although nomination and award are entirely separate processes."

So what was he nominated on? Looks? Rhetoric? Promises? Use of a teleprompter? Please...it's a sham...

hm...
I just got email from AVAAZ, there is a petition to sign:
"Congratulations on winning the Nobel Peace Prize! During the coming months and years, we urge you to fulfil your promise of change: to deliver nuclear disarmament and a climate deal, support peace and development in Afghanistan, and broker a fair and lasting peace in the Middle East. We can only achieve the world we seek by acting now, decisively and together. "
But as an European and a person who knows meaning of English words mainly from books (what's more - British English) and completely don't understand American mentality - I'm afraid to sign it,
what does it mean "support peace" ??

Being Canadian, I have difficulty understanding the term "speaks American english only". What exactly does this mean and how does this differ from just "English only"? My heritage too is also very closely linked European, by way of my Grandparents moving here directly from England and Ireland. It can all be very confusing at times.

Right, Carole;
it's un-ducking-believable!

Summing up the president's day, the libertarian Cato Institute issued a news release with a pointed title:
"For Obama; peace in the morning, war in the afternoon."
(Washington Post)

I am pleased that The Nobel Peace Prize Committee is norwegian, and not swedish!
We shall have in mind that the peace prize has been given to Henry Kissinger! (I say no more)
And what have Al Gore ever done for peace???
Or the terrorist Menachem Begin???

Some have deserved the Peace Prize though:
1944 - International Committee of the Red Cross
1960 - Albert Lutuli
1961 - Dag Hammarskjöld
1964 - Martin Luther King Jr.
1977 - Amnesty International
1985 - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
1989 - Dalai Lama
1991 - Aung San Suu Kyi
1993 - Nelson Mandela
1997 - International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Jody Williams
1999 - Médecins Sans Frontières
2004 - Wangari Muta Maathai

As described in Nobel's will, one part was dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"...

“Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”
(Martin Luther King Jr)

Just Carole for President!
Girl I would totally vote you based solely on your honesty to yourself and to others;)
The Noble Peace prize has only been issued to two sitting Presidents and was not given to Carter (who i do not agree with at all on policies but is a huge Humantarian Hero) until two years out of Presidency.During which he was the pivet point of several peace agreements.
The point of the award is for accomplishments already...oh I don't know..ACCOMPLISHED maybe!
Although I disagree with some on the wars. The why's or why nots etc...
But I do agree he still has two wars on his hands, the World economy, let alone our economy is still in shables, there are in fact raising tensions between Middle Eastern countries and that of countries like N.Korea.
Which by the way......when n.Korea had our 2 journalist they refused to talk to him and even Hillary!
They had to send FORMER President Bill Clinton to free those women.
So in actuality it should be Bill Clinton getting such an award based on gee....accomplishments.
Thank you Carole for being brave and honest on this issue.

Naomi Klein calls the nobel peace prize fondation "Insulting and delusional" Up until now I was a fan of Naomi Klein. Not any more. Saying that the prize would have been better given to someone more deserving is a genuine answer and I would have respected the opinion of anyone who wanted to put it that way. But to call these fondation members insulting and delusional I think is going to far. Why is it that people think they must put things in prospective by way of insults.

The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples". The committee highlighted Mr Obama's efforts to support international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament. What is about this statement do some people not understand. To say he has done nothing is foolish.
I think there may be a lot of people out there more deserving of the prize but I can't help but be happy that he did get it, after all he is my President of my country.

I agree that presidents and diplomats should not even be eligible for nobel prizes. Ending war and attaining and maintaining peace is their job.
As far as Obama. Those who think he deserves it, tell me what he has accomplished, not said, but actually acomplished that he deserves it. Also, applying for it just two weeks into his Presidency? Really? someone, probably his marketers, really felt he deserved it just for getting through the inauguration.
he doesn't deserve it. he has done NOTHING to deserve it. he continues bush's wars and is expanding them. If he deserves the Peace Priz then so does Bush for starting the wars Obama is continuing.
Read Counter Punch's article War and Peace>/a>. You'll see war mongers Republican and Democrat alike were given the peace Prize.
Like I keep saying Republican or Democrat, makes no difference, they are all under the Money Party. They are greedy and they don't care who or how many they hurt, destroy or kill to get what they want.
This Nobel Prize was a political move to put this under obama's belt preparing him for something. Not knowing for what is what scares me.

Compare Mandela to Obama. Mandela prevented a blood bath here in South Africa. He sat in prison for most of his life. I did not think he deserved the prize because 'after all he is president of my country, but because he had earned it - fair and square'. Compare Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Obama. Compare their life's work - the foundations they have spawned that are actively involved in promoting peace and care for the unfortunates of this world. Both of them call a spade a spade, unlike Obama.

If one looks at the list of past winners; there are only a handful deserving of this prize. In my opinion this prize is often a sham and an insult to the world.

Politicians who are 2 weeks into their presidency cannot by the BIGGEST stretch of imagination be nominated for a Nobel Peace prize for things they are going to do...... Using this logic most of the human race should get a prize.....

I think Obama is a good man beset on all sides by those with dubious intentions. If he was nominated well into his presidency based upon results - well I would be the first to congratulate him.

The outpouring of congrats to him (vociferous on another thread - smacks of patriotism, not logic)

Hats off to Just Carole! I thought that the Nobel Prize was awarded only for ACHIEVEMENTS and not for EFFORTS, extraordinary or otherwise. The Nobel Prize has been devalued! The Norwegians are showing double standards. What is their hidden agenda?

Nobel Prize for Promises?
by: Howard Zinn

I was dismayed when I heard Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize. A shock, really, to think that a president carrying on wars in two countries and launching military action in a third country (Pakistan), would be given a peace prize. But then I recalled that Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Kissinger had all received Nobel Peace Prizes. The Nobel Committee is famous for its superficial estimates and for its susceptibility to rhetoric and empty gestures, while ignoring blatant violations of world peace.

Yes, Wilson gets credit for the League of Nations - that ineffectual body which did nothing to prevent war. But he also bombarded the Mexican coast, sent troops to occupy Haiti and the Dominican Republic and brought the US into the slaughterhouse of Europe in the first World War - surely, among stupid and deadly wars, at the top of the list.

Sure, Theodore Roosevelt brokered a peace between Japan and Russia. But he was a lover of war, who participated in the US conquest of Cuba, pretending to liberate it from Spain while fastening US chains around that tiny island. And as president he presided over the bloody war to subjugate the Filipinos, even congratulating a US general who had just massacred 600 helpless villagers in the Phillipines. The Committee did not give the Nobel Prize to Mark Twain, who denounced Roosevelt and criticized the war, nor to William James, leader of the anti-imperialist league.

Oh yes, the Committee saw fit to give a peace prize to Henry Kissinger, because he signed the final agreement ending the war in Vietnam, of which he had been one of the architects. Kissinger, who obsequiously went along with Nixon's expansion of the war with the bombing of peasant villages in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Kissinger, who matches the definition of a war criminal very accurately, was given a peace prize!

People should not be given a peace prize on the basis of promises they have made (as with Obama, an eloquent maker of promises) but on the basis of actual accomplishments towards ending war. Obama has continued deadly, inhuman military action in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Nobel Peace Committee should retire, and turn over its huge funds to some international peace organization which is not awed by stardom and rhetoric, and which has some understanding of history.

It's a farce. Someone who has sent thousands more troops into Afghanistan, who has sanctioned the dropping of bombs on Pakistan, gets the Nobel Peace Prize. Just shows what it's worth. How he can accept it, I don't know. You would have to have a neck for anything but soap.

Jossie,
How do you know he did not ask for it? You have to apply for nomination? Who applied? someone he knows and knew they were doing it? Or did he?
In your blind loyalty, since you feel so strongly, tell us "complainers" what he actually did, what he actually achieved, that he deserves the Nobel Pece Prize? What has he accomplished?
Show us the error of our ways.
Millions around the world agree with us.

Obama and the Nobel Prize: When War becomes Peace, When the Lie becomes the Truth

By Michel Chossudovsky

Global Research, October 11, 2009

"When war becomes peace,

When concepts and realities are turned upside down,

When fiction becomes truth and truth becomes fiction.

When a global military agenda is heralded as a humanitarian endeavor,

When the killing of civilians is upheld as "collateral damage",

When those who resist the US-NATO led invasion of their homeland are categorized as "insurgents" or "terrorists".

When preemptive nuclear war is upheld as self defense.

When advanced torture and "interrogation" techniques are routinely used to "protect peacekeeping operations",

When tactical nuclear weapons are heralded by the Pentagon as "harmless to the surrounding civilian population"

When three quarters of US personal federal income tax revenues are allocated to financing what is euphemistically referred to as "national defense"

Please note the following news:

No Nobel Prize for Mahatma Gandhi

and sign the PETITION.

If the prize was awarded to Obama as encouragement, perhaps we need to encourage the Nobel Prize Commission to remember the purpose of their commission and consider those who have actually devoted their LIVES to its intent!

"On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament, giving the largest share of his fortune to a series of prizes, the Nobel Prizes. As described in Nobel's will, one part was dedicated to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

I believe I have found the answer to my own question in this "questionable" portion of the Nobel Statutes:

Statutes of the Nobel Foundation

"§ 10. No appeals may be made against the decision of a prize-awarding body with regard to the award of a prize.

Proposals received for the award of a prize, and investigations and opinions concerning the award of a prize, may not be divulged. Should divergent opinions have been expressed in connection with the decision of a prize-awarding body concerning the award of a prize, this may not be included in the record or otherwise divulged.

A prize-awarding body may, however, after due consideration in each individual case, permit access to material which formed the basis for the evaluation and decision concerning a prize, for purposes of research in intellectual history. Such permission may not, however, be granted until at least 50 years have elapsed after the date on which the decision in question was made."

I just made the comment to my hubby that so many of the activists on here have actually suffered in prison for animal and human rights. so many have done so much, not promised to, but actually did the works. a campaign speech is just that, he was nominated for that? I mean that is what some have said to me when I ask why? well, just listen to his speech...wth does that mean? 2 wks in office and nominated?
I am not knocking the prez, he will get no where without our support. but let's see him get somewhere before we yell BRAVO, JOB WELL DONE! and give the highest of honors.
reading Nobel's will -ty Carole- says it all:
'..the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses'
something just doesn't seem right here. :/

I said it before, and I'll say it again. Everyone attacked Supreme Court Justice Scalia, or The Scaly Lizard, as I see him. SUPREME COURT JUSTICES ARE APPOINTED BY THE PRESIDENT. THEY CAN BE REMOVED ALSO.
What about the Aerial Hunt driving baby wolves, pregnant mommy wolves and creatures happy in their habitat into a hunter's game, reminds me of the scene in North By Northwest where Cary Grant is chased by a Cropduster so they can shoot him. When it comes to animal rights, I have yet to see Obama makes positive changes. He signed Bush's endeavor to have these wolves killed. And Alaska's environment....but what is so evil is that videos, sanctioned by Supreme Court Justice Lizard Scales, where women stomp on kittens and other small animals ON VIDEO FOR ENTERTAINMENT OF THE SICKO MASSES....that is sanctioned by Justice Lizard Scales Scalia. WHAT IS OBAMA DOING ABOUT IT? It's too soon in the game to hand out awards. A full term of positive change involving all life species, the environment and the world would earn Obama or anyone a Nobel Peace Prize. Until then, don't preach to me. I'm not handing out free candy for this one.

I said this on the othe post he did nothing for peace, what did he do but go over there and Apologize for the USA how degrading is that. Our men fighting and our vets are fuming. this is not right he should have turned down that peace prize he is not even American to me he has yet to prove it. What a sorry mess our Country is. He is just like another Hitler. Betts

While I don't think he deserved the Nobel Betts; I think comparing him to Hitler is extreme especially considering that pair of fascists Bush and Cheney who have been taking the US downhill for the past 10 years.

Just Carole (430)
Sunday October 11, 2009, 3:18 pm

While I understand the "gist" of what Betty is saying, due to the promotion of escalation of war in the Middle East, although this country is not beint directly attacked -- which DOES look much like fascism . . . I have to agree that the insinuation of Obama to Hitler is uncalled for.

In the first place, Obama (with is well-spoken rhetoric and teleprompters) doesn't have the cojones to actually call what he does as "aggression" -- and Hitler would have said it outright.

No, we're dealing with a much more genteel personality here. He's killin' folks -- SHO' NUFF! -- and he keeps reminding us that he's the "commander in chief," BUT he's "peaceful" about it (even as he ok's another 60,000 troops to Afghanistan to kill civilians who haven't a clue WHY we're doing it).

And, if we were honest, instead of being partisan, we'd tell this "righteous" president of ours that he should turn down the award -- ADMITTING he hasn't earned it.

But, that ain't gonna happen -- cuz that would be a sign of true integrity and respect for the honor!

For all the "Obamaphiles":

Think about this. If he were TRULY a man of honor (and he's already publicly admitted he doesn't deserve this award), and he's REALLY "humbled" -- WHY DIDN'T HE TURN IT DOWN AND SUGGEST THAT IT BE GIVEN TO A CANDIDATE MORE DESERVING?

Why? Because he's an egotistical opportunist, and I'm sure his staff informed him that no one can contest it, and they don't have to reveal who nominated him, for 50 years.

Naomi Klein was RIGHT -- THIS discredits the prize itself!

The following is a quote from a comment I left (and deeply feel) on Naresh's submission regarding Gandhi:

"What I love most about the way this petition was graciously handled by my dear friend, Naresh, is that it illustrated -- without denigrating anyone else -- one of the most worthy recipients of this honor, who was rejected several times. Gandhi is the epitome of grace, selflessness, sacrifice and generosity. That is a FACT, recognized worldwide.

I don't think many of us ever questioned the method, or rules, or committee that decides who is "qualified" to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which we have all taken for granted is a "prestigious" award.

I, for one, now have my reservations as its real value. And, I thank Mr. Kadyan for enlightening me as the questionable origins of what we revere as "honors," and those who make the decisions as to those who they deem are worthy of them."

Just Carole (430)

Mr. Obama,

To have earned my respect, you would have had to carry out the deed you alluded to in your acceptance speech -- RETURN IT -- so that it could have been awarded to a recipient truly worthy (as you had already acceded that you did NOT deserve it).

THAT would have sent a message to your children and ours that graciousness is inborn, qualities of humanity and integrity are real, and trophies bestowed -- yet unearned -- are worthless.

Instead, your greed overrode your rhetoric. I would have admired you more if you had stood by your honesty and showed some substance.

BUT, you proved that we are now ruled by omniscient, egomaniacal puppets, controlled by corporations, but lacking human substance and conscience, albeit (with the aid of speech-writers) fully capable of mouthing notable quotes which arouse compassion for country and mankind.

Should I thank you for confirming my lack of trust in American figureheads?

I think not.

Carole, it doesn't really matter if Obama will keep or return the Peace Prize: if Arafat was given it and not demanded to return it even after all the suicide bombers he dispatched into Israel blew up caffees and discos, prertty much everyone else is surely entitled to this "Prize" now.

This "reward" just devaluates the Noble Peace Prize itself.

John R. (56)
Sunday October 11, 2009, 8:51 pm
Don't forget Wild Cat they gave it to that other murderer Rabin at the same time; he and Arafat shared it and before that Sadat and Begin who was the original terrorist in the Middle East; the man who first blew up the cafes and hotels with bombs in the market place.

Wonder what the people who are still being bombed think of it?

Wonder if the idea is to get Obama to "do" peace, not mostly "talk" it?

The Nobel can't be taken back, apparently, even if the recipient contradicts the idea of Peace.

let us celebrate what people elsewhere are celebrating -- that America now has a sane and smart man in the White House, a man who truly wants a world at peace for his two daughters. Many, for the past couple days (yes, myself included), have grumbled, "What has he done to earn this prize?" How 'bout this: The simple fact that he was elected was reason enough for him to be the recipient of this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Because on that day the murderous actions of the Bush/Cheney years were totally and thoroughly rebuked. One man -- a man who opposed the War in Iraq from the beginning -- offered to end the insanity. The world has stood by in utter horror for the past eight years as they watched the descendants of Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson light the fuse of our own self-destruction. We flipped off the nations on this planet by abandoning Kyoto and then proceeded to melt eight more years worth of the polar ice caps. We invaded two nations that didn't attack us, failed to find the real terrorists and, in effect, ignited our own wave of terror. People all over the world wondered if we had gone mad. And if all that wasn't enough, the outgoing Joker presided over the worst global financial collapse since the Great Depression. So, yeah, at precisely 11:00pm ET on November 4, 2008, Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. And the 66 million people who voted for him won it, too. By the time he took the stage at midnight ET in the Grant Park Historic Hippie Battlefield in downtown Chicago, billions of people around the globe were already breathing a huge sigh of relief. It was as if, in that instant, one man did bring the promise of peace to the world -- and most were ready to go wherever he wanted to go to achieve that end. Never before had the election of one man made every other nation feel like they had won, too. When you've got billions of people ready, willing and able to join a cause like this, well, a prize in Oslo is the least that you deserve. One other thought. The Peace Prize historically has been given to those who have worked to throw off the yoke of racial discrimination and segregation (Martin Luther King, Jr., Desmond Tutu). I think the Nobel committee, in awarding Obama the prize, was also rewarding the fact that something profound had happened in a nation that was founded on racial genocide, built on racist slavery, and held back for a hundred-plus years by vestiges of hateful bigotry (which can still be found on display at teabagger rallies and daily talk radio). The fact that this one man could cause this seismic historical event to occur -- and to do so with such grace and humility, never succumbing to the bait, but still not backing down (yes, he asked to be sworn in as "Barack Hussein Obama"!) -- is more than reason enough he should be in Oslo to meet the King on December 10. Maybe he could take us along with him. 'Cause I also suspect the Nobel committee was tipping its hat to all of us -- we, the Am erican people, had conquered some of our racism and did the truly unexpected. After seeing searing images of our black fellow citizens left to drown in New Orleans -- and poor whites seeing their own treated no better than the black man they had been raised to hate -- we had all seen enough. It was time for change. Thank you, Barack Obama, for giving us the opportunity to redeem ourselves. Now for the tasks ahead. We need you to do all that you promised to do. We need it. The world needs it. My prediction for the future? You become the first *two-time* winner of the Nobel Peace Prize! Yeah! M.Moore

obama never opposed the war in Iraq. He said he did not vote for it but that is only because he was not in the Senate at the time. since he took office he voted yes to funding the war every single time without question. he knows that money for the military, that two thrids of the money awarded goes to private companies. The soldiers get squat. That is why there are groups like www.anysoldier.com to get donations for much needed supplies. Our government doesn not meet theri basic needs so we have to. Our taxes are going to private companies for services and goods we never see.
In the middle of his campaign he rushed to Washington to make sure he was present to vote yes to extending bush's illegal wiretapping. Now in Presidency he has not continued it but expanded it.
He has stripped the Kyoto treaty, still perpetuates the myth that glovbal warming is a fantasy and slaughters endangered species by delisting them.
He refuses to put an end to the Patriot Act and restore our rights and obey and uphold the constitution as he was sworn to do.
He insists on letting 45,ooo die each year from lack of health insurance, that is not counting the ones who die who DI have insurance and are denied care, and die. He feels all those deaths and blood on HIS hands are worth it for the billions in profits his cronies will receive (not to mention his cut).
Those who were breathing a sigh of refief were dillusional. They believe sound bites and blindly voted for a tyrant because it was easier than looking at his voting record.
Saying we have done better just because he isn't bush or becuse he is black is a poor criteria for voting in a President and giving him so much power. he is a tryant, no less than Bush. If it were not for the photos, if I ony looked at their actions, I would not be able to tell them apart.
he deserves nothing but to be removed from office along with every member of congress who continue to commit crimes against the American people in favor of prifits for themselves and their rich cronies.

Jill P. (41)
Monday October 12, 2009, 8:02 am
BTW the ONLY Presidential candidate who actually voted AGINST the Iraq war, the Patriot Act, the continued funding of the wars, and against the illegal wiretapping was Dennis Kucinich. so where were the American people then? They want an honest candidate, a compassionate one but refuse to vote for one when they are available. They don't vote for him BECAUSE he does not accept corporate contributions and therefore does not run rich ad campaigns. Americans want rich celbrities not honest men or women. That is why the one who raises the most money alwasy wins. We don't want change, that is why Americans voted for Obama. We want rich celbrities no matter how dishonest or abusive because it is familiar.
Americans should never be allowed to vote again until they have all undergone at least a year of a twelve step program. Americans are way to dysfunctional to handle the power and responsibility of a democracy.

He did not For or Against the war because he was not in the senate at the time.
He is continuing the PAtriot Act.
and all the things that you qouted about our Armed forces and the absolute lack of funds necessary for them to HELL do anything! And giving it to private companies is sickening!
Which by the way the Bush administration brought us,thank Mr. Bush.

NASHVILLE (The Borowitz Report) - President Barack Obama stunned the country music world today by picking up its highest honor, Country Music Entertainer of the Year.

Mr. Obama was chosen unanimously, according to the Country Music Association, beating out such favorite as Carrie Underwood and Toby Keith.

In Nashville, country music insiders were shocked by Mr. Obama's selection, given that he has only been in office for eight months and during that time has yet to record a single country song.
But Mr. Obama was gracious in receiving the honor, saying that he was "honored and humbled" by the award before excusing himself to accept this year's Heisman Trophy.

Well, seein' as how OUR President has also won the Country Music Award, I'd like to contribute this here song for him to sing when he accepts that there award down in Gnashville:

Ah want y'all to know ah don't deserve this prize,
Ah'm just a President in most of the world's eyes,
But ah've been known to sing "country" when in ma bower,
(Most times ah duet when ah am in ma shower!)

Ah'm bowin' to the wisdom of yo committee,
Who knows good country singers, (and who thinks one's ---> me,)
Thank y'all very kindly, ah'll keep practicin'
(So that mebbe next year ah kin win agin!)

(As per that Heisman trophy, must be basketball
Is why ah won that. But ah gotta tell y'all
Ah know it ain't fer bowling, cuz tho ah have pluck,
Even I admit at bowling, ah jess suck!)

Mary ;)

Well, I think a person who's brave enough to take bold snipes -- publicly, in writing -- at another member, and who feels they are only speaking truth, should be able to do so using their own identity.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but its a cheap shot to do so under a fake ID, then hide your profile.

"BTW the ONLY Presidential candidate who actually voted AGINST the Iraq war, the Patriot Act, the continued funding of the wars, and against the illegal wiretapping was Dennis Kucinich."

Wrong. Take a look at Ron Paul. He was a threat, (with actual delegate votes) and is still regarded as such. Are there claims of Dennis hijacking the party?

I was referring to the Democrats since obama was being praised so much.
Ron Paul is on the Conservative side. He too tried to get third parties in the debates. he believes Americans should be allowed to hear from ALL their options for Presidency NOT just from the dual Money Party.
I found it very interesting that even the conservative Independents were more liberal thatn Obama. THEY ALL, both sides of the spectrum, were going to pull out of the two wars and opposed the bank bailouts.
That is why I dont care who anyone votes for as long as it is NOT a corporate candidate...AGAIN. Obama, Clinton, and McCain were and still are corporate candidates. Kucinich, Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, and the independents are not.

Obama Nobel win shocks Swedish peace group.
The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (Svenska Freds) has classified as "shameful" the decision by the Nobel Committee in Oslo to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 to Barack Obama.
"The choice of Barack Obama as the recipient of the world's foremost peace prize is shocking," said the group's chairwoman Anna Ek in a statement.

Ek conceded that the US president had sent "positive signals" with regard to his future commitment to global peace.
"But at the same time Obama is the president of the biggest military power in the world and is waging two wars in the world. That should certainly disqualify him from a peace prize," said Ek.
The leader of the Swedish opposition, Social Democrat Mona Sahlin, said the prize award would serve to increase expectations that Obama can deliver concrete results.

"It's a pleasing political turnaround from the years with George W Bush, who disregarded the UN's rules and regulations," she said in a statement.
Moderate Party parliamentary group leader Lars Lindblad said that, though he was glad Obama had been elected president of the United States, awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize was a "historic mistake".

"In my view the Peace Prize should go to somebody who has achieved something," he told Dagens Nyheter.
Social Democrat foreign policy spokesman Urban Ahlin confessed to being caught off guard by the award.
"I was quite surprised I have to say. The efforts Barack Obama has made for peace do not currently correspond to a peace prize," he told news agency TT.

Ahlin noted that while Obama has mapped out an exit strategy for Iraq, fighting still continues. War also continues to rage in Afghanistan; the Guantanamo Bay detention facility remains operative; and the president's Middle East initiative has not yet borne fruit.
"I'd like to have seen Obama get the peace prize in a few years when he can show the results of his efforts. Now is too early," he added.

THANK YOU, BENGT!

It's good to know that there are some people who remember that the Peace Prize was intended to be awarded for real accomplishments, and not intentions!
