Remember President Bush and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld telling us that the war on terror would be endless?  No it won’t be, if Rep. Barbara Lee (CA) passes her very sensible bill.

“Congress finds that the Authorization for Use of Military Force…signed into law on September 18, 2001, has been used to justify a broad and open-ended authorization for the use of military force and such an interpretation is inconsistent with the authority of Congress to declare war and make all laws for executing powers vested by the Constitution in the Government of the United States.” ~ Excerpt from H.R. 6282

That legislation would repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force that was passed just after September 11, 2001.  That authorization has been used to justify U.S. military interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other countries; torture; holding detainees indefinitely, running up military spending, extravagant and ineffective spending of tens of billions of tax dollars on so-called intelligence.  We should follow Rep. Barbara Lee’s leadership to help her get H.R. 6282 enacted.  Read FCNL’s statement from 2001 opposing this Authorization.

I'm always glad to see members of Congress standing up for their rights and any powers wrongly assumed by any other branch . . . and as such, when WE see that, WE must show support for them by letting our own representatives know that WE are aware; and WE agree!

How quickly and easily the message of the right corrupts all discourse. Look at what Obama HAS done, before you criticize what he has not done.

Obama is in a major battle of his own with the generals who, naturally want war. He wants us out of Afghanistan by then end of 2011 - only time will tell if this will happen, mean while we can work to let Congress and the president know what we want.

Noted and signed. Our country spends more on our military than all of the other countries of the world, COMBINDED. Crazy! And most of it is all for profieteering, for power and greed. Which is why rich corporations are running our country.

I'm with Kit on this. We could spend all day long pointing fingers at who did or didn't do what (and we HAVE BEEN for some time).

Right now, this is a call to action for CITIZENS! If we do not make our wishes known to our so-called representatives, we have no right to complain or vote them out.

How fortunate you are Gran Pat, most of us here in Texas don't have a democrat to represent us, you not only have a democrat, but one of the truly good guys.

I sign these knowing that Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX 9th) will not read or in person listen to our pleas for almost any thing not in lock step with whatever the republican agenda is for that day. I sign and follow up with personal letters and phone calls. I believe Carole is correct we must use the system as designed and keep working for improvement. War is not the answer. So let's write and push for better answers, let's make our thoughts and opinions heard.

I now have my FCNL Yard sign - WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER - in my front yard.

Kucinich/Paul...I hear that.
I believe also that we must use the system as designed and keep working for improvement. If we don't vote strategically to attain our goals, we play into the hands of those we oppose. We must push for what we want. Vote. And make it count. Vote to override the filibuster, vote to end the war, vote for our environment, vote because you can and it has meaning and result. Claiming to have no power is a self fulfilling prophecy.

Carole, thanks so much for this. Noted and letter sent to my representative. I was glad to see that Grijalva is a co-sponsor. While not my representative (sadly) he is at least in my state. And Kit, thanks for the tip about the yard sign. I ordered my signage. I also pester the daylights out of my senators Kyl and McCain; you can imagine how well they represent my ideas.... and I continually write and call my representative who is a very, very conservative Dem. We'll see what she does on this issue. If we are to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people then we all have to make our wishes known loud and clear... over and over and over again until they get it.

So let's Remind Them they Work FOR us! :)

Let's not forget that the Obama govt via Sec of State Clinton has just come out with a denunciation & condemnation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is a total mockery of concern for human rights, as long as US wars of aggression, crimes against civilians, arbitrary detention & detainee abuse continue to exist: "The Obama administration (last) Wednesday placed eight Iranian officials on a U.S. financial blacklist, saying they were responsible for BEATINGS, KILLINGS, & TORTURE following Iran's disputed presidential election last year. The Treasury and State departments jointly announced that the sanctions, signed by President Barack Obama, target Iranians who "share responsibility for the SUSTAINED AND SEVERE VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS in Iran."
At a State Department news conference, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said this is the first time the United States has imposed SANCTIONS ON IRANIANS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES. "On these officials' watch or under their command, Iranian citizens have been ARBITRARILY ARRESTED, BEATEN, TORTURED, RAPED, BLACKMAILED, AND KILLED ," Clinton said. "Yet the Iranian government has ignored repeated calls from the international community to end these abuses."
...skip...
Numerous detainees in American custody were also BEATEN, TORTURED & KILLED. The PHOTOS Obama caused to be SUPPRESSED -- even after TWO FEDERAL COURTS ORDERED them DISCLOSED -- depicted MULTIPLE ACTS OF DETAINEE RAPE. Thousands were arbitrarily arrested and detained by the U.S. without due process, and CONTINUE TO BE. None of that resulted in a SMIDGEN OF ACCOUNTABILITY for the HIGH-LEVEL US GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS RESPONSIBLE for all of that, because the Obama administration formally took the position that they should be IMMUNIZED. Somehow, though, the same Obama officials manage WITH A STRAIGHT FACE to stand up IN PUBLIC and impose penalties on Iranians for the SAME conduct. (I haven't reproduced the many links in this text & it is just the beginning of:)
Obama to Finally Punish Torturers! "A New Day's Gonna Come" !

Or that "The U.S. war in (against) Pakistan continues to escalate, as Pakistanis attacked NATO tankers carrying fuel through their country to soldiers in Afghanistan last night, killing three people, an attack that was in retaliation for vastly increased U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan this month, which were ordered in alleged response to reports of increased Terrorist threats aimed at Europe, which, in turn, were in retaliation for the escalating wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan (as evidenced by the large numbers of individuals of Afghan descent involved in these plots)." -- Just the beginning of 'War on Terror logic' by Glenn Greenwald, 10/04/2010

...and the really sad part is that the war mongers in Bush's administration considered the attacks on 11 September a happy accident...that gave them a reason to go to war so that the likes of Cheney and his company could make money...and they jumped all over it on 18 September...2001...

Thank you, Kate.

While the motives of the Bush administration for embracing this opportunity will always be questionable, the most important point that we must ALL grasp is that the enactment of this amendment was a step closer to tyranny -- something warned about by the original signers, and completely contrary to their zealous and courageous intent.

By design, and under provisions of the Constitution, there are chains of command and methods for perfecting/repealing laws that contradict the sanctity of those documents that were the very foundation for this nation's declaration of independence from oppression.

We MUST follow them, until amended.

I call for ALL, who respect the provisions of the governing documents of this nation, to REPEAL THIS AUTHORIZATION . . . and humbly ask that you inform/call upon others to add their voice.

Kate Dyson,
9/11 was no accident.
It was an inside job, planned and orchestrated
by the Fed Govt.
9/11 required access to the highest levels of the
government, up to and including the office of the President.........
who, at that time was, of course, Dick Cheney.

I do believe for those who read this article and most seem to have done that, the intent here is focused on the actual war and not the situation of 9/11 that could or should be directed to another thread. Let's do stay on the topic at hand. I also realize that Carole has made valiant efforts to keep this on topic, and most have done that, however some seem to have a need to use this thread for their own interests. Please post your own article and leave this one to it's original purpose.

Very few happenings can justify War including that the correct country must be punished. The vestiges of war are horrible. Visit the VA Hospital as I have to see why we should prevent war in any way we can. You fight when there is definitely no other way such as WW2.

Just Carole (338)
Wednesday October 6, 2010, 2:51 pm

Very true, Marilyn! We must never forget the horrific damages, at home and abroad. The civilians, who suffer most in those countries we attack with drones and their horrific aftermath, were never our enemies; and our soldiers, who return with physical and mental incalculable injuries, deserve our respect.

Bless your heart.

Just Carole (338)
Wednesday October 6, 2010, 4:02 pm

Very true; and thank you, Robert.

We have, for too long, aligned ourselves with the decisions of generals -- who, by design, are inclined to resort to barbarism instead of intelligent discourse -- and we have continually lauded victories (which are, in fact, deaths) and resolved that war is the answer, when, in truth, it resolved NOTHING, but despair, proof of cruelty, damaged homes and minds.

It's time to seek a better way.

When will people understand that, when we define "victory" as the number of lives taken, NO ONE won?

Each life taken was a member of a family -- just as each life lost is an endless sorrow to the people who loved that person.

When we decide that the "enemy" has no rights to life, WE are the barbarians.

When will our citizens stop asking the question, WHY, and start understanding that wars are fought by the poor, for the benefit of the rich? If you don't believe this, just look at the results, so far. The wealthier have become wealthier and the poor have become poorer.

Whenever, the middle class starts achieving any amount of status and wealth, the very wealthy must knock them down, in order to preserve THEIR status. This doesn't take a mental giant to work this out.

When people stop using their hearts (the way things should be) and start using their heads (the way thing actually are), the better it will be for all of us, with the exception of the most upper class.

Thanks Carole & Kit for keeping this on topic. I've sent the message to my rep. (Inslee - WA) he's a good guy, if he can I'm sure he'll sign on.

The Spammer is getting towards the end of the alphabet now, when he reaches the Zs maybe he'll quit :)

I don't know how much good this will do, this guy must be voted out. He stands for nothing I do. I miss Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), who is co-sponsoring this bill. She is a tireless fighter and I was glad she was my elected official when I lived up there. Now to get the jerk out down here, I have hope we can, Alan Grayson is not far from here in Orlando, so I have hope.

The rep. for this state has a pretty good record (thank goodness, the senators aren't worth the powder...) so hope she goes with this one. Thanks.

I'll put my foot in it here.
Perhaps as an 'outsider' voice I'll be thought of as not understanding the niceties of politics. That may well be. But I understand this very well.
Whatever the 'Democratic' Party or President Obama may mean to you, at the end of the day his 'progress' has been providing fresh territory for the practice of murder. It didn't need time to feud with the generals to accomplish this. That title Commander-in-Chief means chief cook and bottlewasher...and no brass hat has the authority to take him on.
I'll remind you of what happened to the last General who tried, MacArthur. Canned.

Why not investigate who first constructed this bill, including any amendments, how it was presented to Congress and, most importantly, who voted for it.
It will give some idea as to how qualified these people were holding the position of representing you, the American people, the same people who elected them into this position of power in the first place.

Great post Just noted and forwarded. I hope that many Americans will sign. We are all for you. These senseless wars must end. You cannot currently send a star to Just because you already etc. etc. Thousands of stars to you Just and the good work you are doing.

On the wonderful Peasant Diva's comment, thanks for sharing yet another example of hypocrisy. No one in the government of the United States has any moral right to condemn such actions when they are supporting and sanctioning the very same things. When the U.S. brings its military and secret services under control and stops the reign of terror that is scourging the whole world it will have the right to criticize others, but not a moment before that.

I give my total support and feelings for all of you wonderful Americans who are trying to bring your country's actuality in line with it's mythological (nice word for lies constantly remanufactured by the powers and the powers behind the powers) self-image. I believe in the myth of America too, as a goal for the guture if we continue to believe it will one day be achieved, after all the others realize it is not operating today. as we all know, self-realization is a path full of pain as we clean up the false images and try to make our goals for ourselves real.

I gladly personalized and sent the message to my Rep, who unfortunately is not likely to support the bill. Thank you Carol.

Don't ever give up folks, even if you do not think your Reps will listen send them messages anyway. Never give up hope, sometimes that's the only thing we have.

When I read the comments here I see hope. I see people who will accept no more lies. You have reached the end of the tether! Go to it. Bring back America. Only you can do it.

My message went to Nadler. I've been pissed off at him since he would not push for impeachment (I stopped him in the street more than once on this) but he is on the right...er...correct page on most issues. I will never understand why many Dems...well perhaps I do understand, and it disgusts me. Anyway Nadler isn't Mr.K but he is a real Dem and proves it... MOST of the time.
