A Politically Plausible Scenario We Can Envisage

Mark Lynas has addressed the issue of politically plausible scenarios in a blog where he concludes none of them can help us stay below two degrees Celsius of global warming - but he wasn't aware of Plan B 3.0 - the plan of hope by Lester R Brown from EPI

Mark Lynas seems not to know that there are indeed some politically plausible scenarios we could take as our road-maps, and foremost among them is Plan B 3.0 - Mobilizing to Save Civilization by Lester R. Brown from Earth Policy Institute www.earthpolicy.org - there's hope, and we can do it, and we must mobilize to save civilization at war time speed - and it's doable if it is not actively hindered...

There's an interesting growing Care2 group for those who want to know more about Lester R Brown's plan of hope: http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/EarthPolicyInstitute

People in many parts of the world are already experiencing that "we are not going to avoid dangerous climate change in the future" - the dangerous climate change is already their everyday reality - so we can't delay any solutions - we can't let millions run out of drinking water, because the glaciers dry up... so it's urgent to act and we need to do a lot of clever things simultaneously and at highest possible speed...
The Plan B-scenario, in which we mobilize our resources, mental and material, at next to war-time speed, is more likely than even ”step change” (Mark Lynas's concept) to keep the warming at its lowest - indeed, we'd better envisage steep change, shouldn't we! ...
It's easy and cheap to be part of the solution, but it will cost us dear to stay part of the problem... in other words: a simple choice! :-)

Lester R. Brown, too, envisages that Kyoto-rounds are far too slow. He says that we, among other things to save civilization, must cut emissions 80% by 2020. Relying on heaps of profound research Brown shows that the whole comprehensive plan is doable with the help of existing and successfully tried technologies, and at a cost that is equal to just a sixth of the world's military budgets. In other words, it's a technologically and economically viable plan for a new economy, based on renewable energy, responding to all major threats humanity and the planet now faces , from a nestor among environmentalists.

350 - thats the most important number in the world right now... check what Bill McKibben has started on http://350.org/ -please, that's where the energy is... one of the many actions taken - count all those who care and be empowered...

Thanks to all of you for comments and not-its and other signs of caring - all much appreciated.
Yes, Louise, let's JUST do it... :-)

Larry, those fires are really a sure sign of what's going on - but we are not just paralyzed spectators - we are called to greatness, too, aren't we? To live up to the occasion and its challenge - and everybody counts and can be part of the solution...

Thank you, Doris! Good work!
Your {plural} donating time and energy to translating a vital document, is just ONE example of how EVERYONE can make a difference, and it doesn't take money or power or enormous influence to do so!

Years Later, Climatologist Renews His Call for Action

Twenty years ago, NASA scientist James Hansen's warnings brought global warming into the news for the first time - and now he plans to testify at a House committee that it is almost too late to start defusing what he calls the 'global warming time bomb'.

Thanks to you (plural) unrelenting activists for your encouragement and hands-on actions - you are inspiring and empowering examples!
Yes - everyone can make a difference, and it does count!

Let's leave the quarrelsome people behind to quarrel among themselves, we've got important work to do, and we can do it with joy and inspiration if we select our company wisely - and in times like these we have to be particular, because it's urgent...

I'll be very interested in what James Hansen has to tell the House committee and us - also Lester R Brown relies heavily on Hansen, who is courageous and undeceived... Thanks, Chris :-)

How to be a climate hero - that's what it is all about - we cannot let ourselves be paralyzed because we have some limiting notions about what is political plausible scenarios - it's like the bystander effect discussed in this excellent submit by Gerry: http://www.care2.com/news/member/674196033/787381, please, read it and you will understand exactly what is paralyzing those who admit there is danger but don't take action - we get spell-bound when we don't see people act on danger with determined and relevant action - so let's look again: there ARE lots of heroes out there, let's support them, let's heed their call to action, their calling us to greatness... the choice is ours...

Hi Susan, thanks - I know you know about heroes, including those not recognized for their gifts to humankind and/or the planet...

Chris, I found that Hansen is very straight-forward: we have barely time to act, so we should get going - among other things he stresses the gap between the special interests of those who have invested in fossile fuels and all the young people (and animals) whose future is at stake - in a world running out of water there will be great food-insecurity - how safe will they be, our kids and grandkids - and all the voiceless living beings?
Let them not say we did nothing...
We actually can do a lot, together... :-)

Doris, the hosts thank you so much. It's time for the clarity of reason. I am so gtateful for you and your thoughts. Let's just DO IT & not focus on our losses now & in the near future. We have to fix it NOW with our pocket books as we did in 1970!
Louise B. I know that Ian will love your contribution. So what are we boycotting Right NOW!
