The maker of the powerful pain drug OxyContin is beginning to test the medicine in children, hoping to secure an extra six months of protection for the drug's patent, which is set to expire in 2013.

The move is controversial, in light of problems with addiction to OxyContin, which belongs to the family of drugs called opioids that also includes morphine and heroin. But several pain specialists say the move is an important step in giving a more accurate picture of the drug's effect on children, considering that many doctors already prescribe the drug off-label for children.

OxyContin's manufacturer, Purdue Pharma, emphasized that the company is not trying to make a kid's version of the drug, nor is it hoping to seek the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval for pediatric use of OxyContin. The goal, said company spokesman James Heins, is to give more information on how the drug acts in the bodies of children who may need it for the overwhelming pain of conditions such as cancer, sickle cell anemia, severe burns and other trauma.

"Doctors are already prescribing it in limited cases for kids, but they don't have the benefit of any clinical studies showing how these drugs work in kids. Right now, all they have to go on is data from adult patients," Heins said.

i cant belive that any normal Mother would allow her child to pop pills from this kind of power, what i do understand is what you said about Chilrderm with cancer (i speak of cancer that is not cureable anymore) that they are looking for some pain treatment but i also belive that this is NOT the right way of doing it. We are sofar these days with all these Medizines and sttuff ( i wonder what happpend to natural Medizine) ... aim just feeling with the kids when they try to put the child of the meds..for a grown up to stop this meds is almoast impossible without long time treatment ( i just know it from reading, here in Europe i do not know if we have these Oxi). Horrible....

this drug is why 10 years later I'm on a suboxone program trying to get off it. Dr over prescribed this drug to me. I never abused medication but the instant surge of good feeling and energy of this pill when snorted turned me into an addict 10years ago and now at 31 I've been trying to get clean for 5 years. Stop this drug period and do not give it to our children.

People need to realize OxyContin is time released Percodan

What makes it so abused is when crushed/chewed or injected it breaks the time release and the drug works powerfully and instantly, a 40mg Oxy is 8 percodan and no doc would Rx 8 percodan as a single dose.

For many Oxy gives back their life and for many more it destroys it.

I have refused OxyContin many times as my experience with it post magor surgery was alot of nausea and vomiting but I do take C-lll opiates daily to be able to live independently and function.

Pain is a mind killer as is addiction nd at some level it becomes a trade off. I worked a sickel cell unit for kids and the screams would make a stone cry, we used the least to gift the max benifit of any narcotic.

Heather I hate to use your words but I will and I am sorry for your experience.

The key word in your post is snorted, the doctor did not tell you to crush and snort the drug and the rush would not have ben there had you taken it orally.

The abuse you say you did not do affected you and I am not saying that to demean you, just a fact that any drug like Oxy is a powerful drug that will cause addiction and thats is why it is controled and prescribed as to how to consume it.

If you can prove your MD told you to crush the pills you can sue them for every penny they have and will ever have.

we can't blame parents, most of us not aware about drugs and their side effects. we have to launch a mass awareness program to protect child rights.

This drug can be addictive to adults, imagine children. Smaller bodies, faster affects is how I see it.

Giving sick and dying children a potent pain killer, is nothing more than a financial hold out for this company. Will morphine do the same thing? Of course; will other pain relievers relieve suffering? Of course. Shame on this company, any doctor who administers it to a child, and of course to the FDA for letting it happen.

BIg Pharma's number one concern is making money. Parents protect your children - there are other choices.

Anything for money these days sadly. The greed is overwhelming and at terrible cost to its victims.

God bless you Heather, from one addict to another. My drug of choice was not pills though. Regarding the article at hand. That's all we need is a bunch of spaced out, hyped up kids running around, stabbing each other with pencils or pens, because they are goard out of their minds. These piece of sh-- drug companies make me sick.

This is just crazy, nuts!! Anything for money. Big Pharma=Greed ANY parent with common sense will NOT allow their child to take this. Or at least I certainly hope not. Thx Dee for bringing us this article.

WOW....drug companies will do ANYTHING to make a buck. I hope that parents will not let these doctors prescribe OxyContin for there children. It is not safe for adults to take this, let alone children. All these pharmacy's are just legal drug pushers. This has to stop. The best thing to do is to stay away from any kind of medications if at all possible. Doctors and pharmacy's work together to get people hooked on drugs, they are just in it for the money. They don't want to help people get well, that would put them out of business. GREEDY ASS WIPES!!!!

Probably everyone knows someone who has been hooked on Oxycontin. A drummer friend of mine ended up that way for back pain, he started with Mogadon. It's a vicious cycle.

Un-freaking-believable. This is one of the drugs which killed Heath Ledger, it's extremely addictive, and and they want to test it on children. Words fail me.

I realize that any medicine/drug has both good and bad sides to it..I just hate to see kids this young being put on something so strong and more so that it is very addictive..

But I also see the side where it would and can help those in extreme Bill C pointed out..

But studies have to be done..this has to be tested before they start prescribing this drug to kids..

"Pain is a real thing, and it needs to be treated," Frattarelli said. "I would be much more comfortable prescribing it [OxyContin] if I knew that well-done studies had been conducted and also that there was a way of minimizing addiction"

Also..there are drugs that many of us take..It literally does save our lives..or at the very least improves the quality of our lives..And thank goodness for that..

Though I feel very bad for those who become addicted..that is a it alcohol or drugs of any nature..

Heather..I cannot imagine any Dr..(least not a sane and good one) telling you to snort OxyContin..And even if a Dr did tell you to do it..why the hell would you ever do it..

Those who say addiction is a choice, don't know much about addiction. The only choice is taking the substance the first time. And I hardly think six-year-olds are making conscious choices about Oxi in this case. Once addiction (physical and psychological) takes hold, choice goes out the window. That's why there are treatment centers for those who would break their addictions.

"Those who say addiction is a choice, don't know much about addiction. The only choice is taking the substance the first time."

That is my point Karen..before one takes anything that they know is addictive..bad..wrong..It is always a clear and conscious choice..
And anyone has the option to choose to stop through whatever means will help them..once they are foolish enough to become addicted..
