VOORHEESVILLE, N.Y. -- "We don't know what's wrong with her. She's too weak to fly so she was down sitting by the bank, very hungry, very weak," said Village Animal Hospital Veterinarian Dr. Holly Cheever.

Our national bird sits in a cage in Voorheesville. Spotted along the Mohawk on Monday, a concerned walker called an expert wildlife rehabilitator who referred the young bald eagle to the Village Animal Hospital.

"Since she has been admitted here, we have taken all kinds of x-rays and found that there are no fractures. She's eating a lot. We're feeding her smelt," said Dr. Cheever.

So she gets stronger, anticipating blood test results from Cornell for possible lead exposure, West Nile virus or organ failure and her caretakers enjoy the wait.

"We always respect the fact she is a wild animal being who is really at the top of the food chain and to see them up close is a really spiritual experience," said Dr. Cheever.

Pete Dubacher in the Berkshire foothills says it's deeper than that.

"The juvenile birds, the teenagers, like all kids, they make mistakes. Sometimes they do things that are foolish and get hurt. I think that's why I have such an empathy for these birds. They're permanently disabled birds and I'm a disabled vet, hey, we're all together as one," said Pete Dubacher director at Berkshire Bird Paradise.
