PLEASE SIGN! It's hard to believe: the Maldives, a 15 year old girl victim of repeated rape has been sentenced to 100 lashes in public. Stop this madness by pressing where it hurts the government Maldives: tourist revenue.

Thank you Sergio for posting and Melania for forwarding. Signed yesterday but re-tweeted and google shared again. This is beyond my ability to understand this kind of thinking. My heart is broken for this young woman and I pray that she finds comfort and solace and that she may heal. This is the worst kind of thing to do to another human being.

Disgusting, but nothing new in the world of Islam, sadly. The normal response would be to punish the rapist, but I guess that is too sensible and insanity prevails to somehow punish the rapist, as if there is any punishment possible for being a victim.

Signed. 486K signatures from all over the world so far -- that's encouraging.

This sounds like sharia law at work, punishing the female victim instead of the male abuser: sharia law is crap in a lot of ways.

This is typical through out all Muslim controlled countries. On this occasion she is not being hung or stoned to death which is far more typical, whilst the rapist male goes free. I regularly sign such petitions or write to various authorities and it is extremely rare that the punishment is commuted unless international pressure is brought to bear.

http://maldives.tourism-srilanka.com/travel-tips/religion.html

Talking about the Maldives religions, people out here have a deep faith in Islam and all the people are Sunni Muslims. Therefore, the major religion of Maldives is Islam. People of Maldives are very religious and offer prayers five times a day in the mosque. Maldivians have a strong belief in afterlife and they are of the opinion that it is decided on the basis of deeds, whether the person will go to hell or heaven. Read on to know more about the religions in Maldive

In fact, it is often said that one has to follow the religion of Islam to obtain the citizenship of this land. There is lack of secular legal system over here. This explains the reason why Islam is given so much importance. In most of the inhabited islands, you can find a number of mosques, which form the central place for practicing of Islamism.

I signed.

Rape laws in other countries need to change. In so many places it is legal or encouraged to punish the rape survivor simply because she is now no longer a virgin, got into the car or left with the people who went on to rape her, was married and through no fault of her own "cheated" on her husband via rape, wore revealing clothes, etc.
