A U.S. Environmental Working Group study looked at the umbilical cords of 10 babies back in 2004. They detected on average 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants which included pesticides, plasticizers, PCBs, lead, mercury and dioxins.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is doing an amazing job of keeping up-to-date on the toxins in our environment and keeping the public informed. There is much useful information on their website

Noted & thanks. We give all these "gifts" to the earth. It's only right the earth gives it back - recycle, reuse, reduce. Reuse & reduce into what?

Thanks for posting this! EWG rules! Also, David Suzuki Foundation (their Facebook and regular web pages and the newsletter one can suscribe to) is a great source of information for everything "green" .

Our environment has such a tremendous impact on our health!!! Toxic waste in our earth around us needs to be taken seriously. This is more evidence that our mother earth is hurting badly.

Thank you so much for this important information, Julie. I am very pleased to have this knowledge. But it is really scary. The seems that we must now prepare ourselves for a future where more children will die, be sick mentally as well as physically, and thus not grow up to become healthy, fit and balanced adults. As a consequence society will be weakened, as weak as nature. Eventually life as we know it will collapse. The cause of it all: Greed for economic profitmaking.

Can these processes be reversed? If umbilical cords showed 200 different chemicals in 2004, then what are they showing now??

Scary…. babies born innocent and polluted… And with the never-slowing down population boom… this world is getting sicker and sicker… A baby born in Iowa affects babies in Thailand and Bolivia… and vice versa...

Sh...ocking! So the EVG and no doubt a lot of other initials are keeping track of the number of toxins. That's nice but who is working to delete them from our environment. That is the point of gaining this kind of knowledge and it is exactly the point that our world is missing in what amounts to criminal negligence. Perhaps the peoples of the world should sue their governments for negligence and failure to construct institutions that have the capacity to ban the chemicals that are putting us all in constant danger. If someone sprayed dieldrin, for example, in a restaurant where people were eating, there would be an immediate outcry and the sprayer would be prosecuted. So why not the companies that persist in putting carcinogens, neurotoxins and other nasty beastly creations into our air and food? They have no excuse. The effects are known.

I still can't believe after all this science and research companies are still allowed to use hundreds of harmful, even lethal, chemicals in everyday products!! Baby shampoo with cancer causing chemicals?? Why is this still happening?? Everyone needs to buy natural organic products so these idiots don't have any more customers.
