Faced with a simmering crisis over dozens of deaths in the quelling of indigenous protests last week, Peru's Congress this week has suspended the decrees that had set off the protests, which were focused upon saving the Amazon rainforests.

While expensive TV commercials tell us of the millions spent by oil companies to provide clean supplies of fuel, they continue to eat up vast areas of land and ocean to drill. The same is true of the loggers. What is left of the Amazon should be protected and this fight should be an international fight. The struggle is the survival of planet earth, we should all care a great deal. Unless the United States of America INC. is just too fat and happy to bothered with the future before profit.

Robert, I honestly think that you should start a Peruvian Native and Rain Forest survival group. I will definately help you find information and develop action strategies.

Thank you for taking action! This is an urgent crisis and we need to get as many people as possible to let Secretary of State Clinton know that the US needs to take action!

John; Incredible thanks, however currently I would have no additional time for your great idea, but I do challenge you to either group post or PM me your info/strategies, and I will make an island-post for it on "Care2 Get The Word Out?" !!!

If our fellow native Peruvian protesters fail & die in the process, then the Amazon Rainforest will soon become an extinct memory, and then in-turn ----

SO SHALL ALL HUMANS, PLANTS & ANIMALS, AS WE HAVE COME TO KNOW THEM, BECOME ALTERED AND/OR EXTINCT!!!!!!!!!!

here we go again. Iquitos, is the largest city in world unreachable by road. It has over 350,000 people and is served by one airport and boats only (lots of roads inside city though). There are few ''ex-patriarchs'' there. Perhaps the most knowledgeable about local happenings is the owner of the restaurant, THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS., originally from Austin, Tx. If you need information, find a way to contact this man. I was in yurimaguis, tarapota, and iquitos Nov. 2005 and used the Lonely Planet Peru book -- so there should be updated contacts in the current edition. Another active American was the owner of The Hobo Hideout hostel in Iquitos. And lastly the tour company, A & E tours had American owner.

Sorry i don't have skills or time to track it all down but believe these leads would have more real news than the media or Roger.
For Yurimaguas, Orlando Zagazeta Riege (The monkey man) is wonderful animal lover and owns Manguare Expeditions. His bus. card from 2005 showed 2 email addresses: oz.jungle@ole.com and orlandojungle@hotmail.com
There are internet cafes all over Peru.

I was also disturbed when Iquitos and Yurimaguas are mentioned because there are big national parks near these cities that were part of the $23 million IMF debt forgiveness for the lands to stay wilderness parks -- so how did the oil and lumber companies get rights to big areas?

This story is vastly more important than what the U.S./World media is covering currently!!!

Not only are the native's rights and lives at stake, but the virtual fate of our Planet Earth also hangs in the shadowy background as well; in regard to the complete destruction of the Amazon Rainforest, and its ultimate ramification impact upon our environmental existence!!!

The Big Industry Power Moguls are using "poverty versus the 'higher standard of living' promise" against the Amazon native people, as they are and have been corrupting the innocent worldwide!!!

What Big Industry does, is first pass legislation to make things tougher on any indigenous native people, and create whatever pressure necessary to make those targeted people become more desperate!

Example: Restrict Trade Agreements . . .etc., and this is always done prior to Big Industry moving into the targeted area!

Then next, Big Industry sends in polished specialists that are supremely paid well ($$$) to make contact with the indigenous natives, and gives a presentation of films and slide-shows --- a regular CEO presentation of the highest caliber, in order to show the natives what they could be having --- to become great like them --- show them what they are missing!!!

And finally the recruitment drive begins, this brings in all able-body paid slaves to work and become employed by the 'Big Project' with the 'Big Promise'.

But then, the native people of these targeted regions realize, that their homes, lands and very environmental existence is being wiped-out, polluted and stripped of life,

Usually after all this, when Big Industry can't extract another drop of oil, trees or whatever they seek, they then just LEAVE and move on to the next prepared targeted area!

No real and true compensation --- only complete moral and environmental devastation is left behind in their wake!!!

This is a 24/7/365 industry of subtrefuge and deceit, with levels of extraordinary planning, that leads directly back to every national president, dictator or king (queen) having full knowledge of and giving their full blessing to this procedure!

They have become empowered by our need for toilet paper, writing paper, gasoline, toothpicks, petroleum plastics and a host of endless modern 'necessities' of the 'higher standard of living'; which will ultimately lead to:

=========== EXTINCTION =============

THIS IS THE PRICE OF COMFORT FOR TODAY!!!

Peru moves to ease Amazon crisis (BBC, June 17)
Peru's government is set to send a bill to Congress revoking land laws that led to deadly clashes between police and indigenous protesters in the Amazon.

The move follows talks between the government and indigenous leaders on ways of easing tensions after more than 30 people died earlier this month.
Amazon Indians say the laws will open their lands to drilling and logging.
Peru's Prime Minister Yehude Simon, who has led the talks, has said he will step down once the dispute is settled.

"I will leave as soon as everything has calmed down, which should be in the coming weeks," Mr Simon told Peruvian radio on Tuesday after meeting indigenous leaders.
He said the government would send a bill to Congress on Wednesday asking for a repeal of the laws which would have allowed mining, oil and gas exploration and other economic development in the Amazon rainforest.
