There is a move on to install the son of the late Shah to power. There is deliberate destabilization going on.

Neo-Cons Are Cheerleading For A Terrorist Who Helped Kill Hundreds Of U.S. Marines

The horrible irony to arise out of the riots and protests in Iran is that many Neo-Cons and phony conservatives, in their unified effort to enthusiastically embrace the Anglo-American establishment’s agenda for regime change, are cheerleading for a brutal thug who directed a terrorist campaign that killed hundreds of U.S. Marines in the 1980’s.

Roy C. I don't have time to get involved in a debate over semantics but there is a huge difference between
" attacking " someone and " criticising " them.
I noticed you posted the same message about Kent State shootings on Tom's thread, which is also about the CURRENT tragedy in Iran, not about an awful event that took place in 1970.
I came to the conclusion, perhaps wrongly, that you were trying to deflect attention from the atrocities which are taking place in Iran as I am typing this. We all need to support these brave people as much as we can.
Peace to you too.

Stan,
I hate to see anyone murdered.
Killings should stop. It doesn't do anything but take a life.
We need to really check out all info before we get into another problem.
Since we started this one with our support for the shah of Iran.
Give Peace a Chance.

While I would have ordinarily thought AVAAZ reliable enough, I'm getting intel that suggests we are receiving reports of a staged media event funded by the CIA. Steph's Blog on WordPress, for instance, gives a 180 degree different accounting of events. Another story - noted by Blue Bunting and picked up by me as well - is that the Shah's son is using this as an opportunity to importune Israel to assist in taking over Iran's government !
Ahmadinejad has been demonized and presented unfairly in the press for years. Iranians know to their cost what happens when foreigners mess with their affairs.
If democracy and self-government are more than buzzwords, we must recognize that violence associated with elections is not uncommon : I certainly remember mass arrests in the USA at convention time too !
The country that imposed a puppet ruler on their next door neighbour should pay attention to the results of intervention : a big bloody mess.
There are 3 million widows in Iraq. I think enough meddling has been done for now.

How hypocritical and callous - to use a crusader picture for an article about human rights in the Middle East.

If you watched even ONE documentary about the crusades, you would know that the crusades were a European colonial conquest of the Middle East. Why on Earth do you think the people of the Middle East still get upset when people talk about the crusades???

I will give you one of many examples of the human rights abuses that the crusaders did to the people of the Middle East: when the crusaders invaded Jerusalem, they committed terrible atrocities, slaughtering most of the city's civilian inhabitants.

Then Saladin led a war to regain the Middle Eastern land that the European crusaders had violently colonised. Saladin's army waged a much more holy war than the crusaders, in that Saladin's muslim army was much more honourable than the barbaric crusaders.

And when the jihad army, led by Saladin came to Jerusalem, to recapture it? Before laying siege, Saladin offered generous terms of surrender, which were rejected by the European colonists. Then Saladin's jihad army fought and regained their land, their city of Jerusalem. Saladin ordered them to not kill anyone inside. They largely followed his orders, and the Temple on the Mount (holy to judaism, christianity, and islam), which had been desecrated by the atrocities that the crusades had done there? While the crusaders had killed many people, drenching the temple in BLOOD, the muslims, conducting a much more genuine holy war, cleansed it with ROSEWATER.

And upon the capture of Jerusalem, Saladin summoned the Jews and permitted them to resettle in the city. (The Crusaders, being much more religiously intolerant, had slaughtered the Jews living in Jerusalem.)

The crusaders are a symbol of killing for Jesus - something that Jesus specifically preached to us NOT to do!!!

A cross symbol worn on a killer is a desecration of Jesus and the christian religion.

Precisely. That is why the hatemongers flogging their wares under any 'organized religion' were suspect by the Puritans and Quakers - among others - who were outspoken critics of the torture and murder of any who dared protest hatemongering from the pulpit. Ecumenacism - the recognition of the commonality of ethical belief among people - is a recognition that the results of prayer and outreach are a belief in cooperation among the common people regardless of what means they take to reach that conclusion.
Fun fact
Richard III is the returning hero in Robin Hood. Actually, he put his people in debt for a literal 'King's Ransom'. Part of the upshot of that was a willingness for Prince - later King - John to consider moving England to Islam rather than the influence of Rome.
What a different world it would be if the then vilified by monk biographers had actually done it !

iran is about people wanting freedoms that most of the world has..its a natural response to being oppresed by the iraninan form of gov..bush/america has always pushed for rights of the people and have made countless speeches about freedom etc.. and i think the iraninan people are listening and want a more free country as any person would...

'Made countless speeches about freedom' 'Bush/America have always pushed for rights of people' LOL Talk about selective memory - even wishful thinking. Talking and doing are not equivalent - even for those who 'spin reality'.
There's too much wrong with this whole post for just a one-liner - which is why I posted an article dealing with many parts of this scenario. Iran : Reality Check

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but every time I've turned on the "news" in the last two weeks the're moaning and whining about Iran. We all know what is coming.

Dan, do yourself a favor and try to pull yourself away from the TV and read a history book. Your comment would be funny if it weren't so incredibly ignorant.

I applaud those of you that have decide to think for yourselves, observe history and speak your truth. As a poster in this thread would say, "Good on you!"

I completely agree with the substance of this piece and strongly back the call to bring this crackdown to an end: human rights, basis rules of decency and responsibility for what one does and/or says must be respected everywhere and by all - Iranian authorities, the opposition and the protesters alike.
And other countries should stay out of it - unless the UN decides otherwise, in which case it would be the duty of the whole world, as one voice and one will, to legitimately handle the eventual situation within the framework of proportionality, rule of law and the same inviolable rules of decency.

Regards.

PS: the displayed picture is indeed rather unfortunate, but hey! it ain't the substance here - and no one is perfect, isn't ?!:-)

women get publicly stoned to death and a man and a woman cant even hold hands in public if they are not married and women cant even show their face in public.....and never mind the "freedom" of press...there is none....i can go on but i think you get my point...the only people who enjoy this type of gov. is the ones with the power and most of the average people in iran dont....people dont like to live this way under such harsh laws with very few freedoms and the average person is doing their best to make their voice heard even if it meant possible death...i think the world(U.S) should show more support for the average iraninan and let the insane leaders know that every person wants freedom and deserves it....the seed has been planted and sooner or later the new iraninan flower will bloom..

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, American academics are subjected to spying in the classroom by spy trainees.
The stories about US and UK staging false reports and promoting unrest in Iran continue to come out. I'll have another list as soon as the time limit for my last post on academic protest has had time to settle.

Blue Bunting (855)
Friday June 26, 2009, 9:06 pm
American academics have been spooked about spying in the classroom since McCarthy; several colleagues I worked with would not allow students to use tape recorders in their classrooms and students with visual impairments had to turn over their tapes to those professors after their classes ended and final exams were given.

Dan. Happy to see your compassionate message of support for the Iranian people who are suffering at the hands of these religious tyrants, which is what Robert's thread was all about.
It made a pleasant change from the ranting and raving of the conspiratorial crack-pots and looney left.
Thank you.
