Since the U.S. stopped all weapons sales to Venezuela (Hugo Chavez) in 2006, the Russians have filled this void with a series of arms deals with Chavez. Is Russia reverting to Cold War 'create a crisis' tactics? Moscow will sell Chavez anything he desires

There are numerous articles concerning a "New Cuban Missile Crisis"!

Just a minor example :

How many missiles do the United States have at their disposal? Who should be more worried, Americans or Venezuealans?

Since the Russian bomber wings have absolute access to Venezuelan airstrips since 2008, and Hugo Chavez has a verbal agreement with Moscow to provide any weaponry he wants, then the odds have become even!

It's the United States facing off once again with Russia --- through the Venezuelan (Hugo Chavez) Cold War PROXY!!!

EWWWWW...

Don't like the sound of this AT ALL!!! Yep, this makes me think about the Cuban Missle crisis all over again, Yipes and Holy You know What!!!

What is wrong with these idiots?????

Sure as Doggie Poop, I don't want any short range missles in South America at all...What is in Hell is Obama doing about this one, maybe I missed it in the article...

If this is for REAL and it goes through, Obama isn't a Man I want to be just "Sweet Talking" to these people...I want some action.

Don't want anything that close to the USA...this is really scary..

Is this set in Stone???? I read and read the article, maybe I missed something...on the last sentence it says Moscow will sell anything they want, that really FREAKS me out!!!

Oh no not good. We really need peace in this world now, not more war and people being terrified.
Thank you Sir Robert

These news are not "new". Chávez has been investing in arms the money he should have invested in another war: the war against poverty. The strategy is not new at all: to face an internal crisis, let's make up an external one... a typical reaction of a Latin-American populist military man in charge. They have always exploited the worst side of patriotism.
TY so much, Sir Robert

It is all related to "OIL"... Venezuela has lots of it.

bush, CIA & Exxon screwed up the relations with Chavez years ago.

Robert, you are indeed correct when you question whether we are returning to the cold war as Russia is increasingly acting like the Kremlin of old.... The world is up for grabs as the US stumbles.....
The icon you use to depict yourself is quite apt, as you probably already know.... There are two wars ascending on the EU; Violent and Cultural, and for the USA, at this time it is primarily cultural....

This is indeed The end of the world as we know it...... Do you all feel fine????

Namaste, Peace Love and Laughter in these trying times.

> Question :

What does North Korea, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, Russia, Iran, Syria, China, Hamas, and Al Qaeda (Radical Islam) all have in common?

> Answer :

A MUTUAL HIDDEN AGENDA!!!

re hidden agendas - http://killinghope.org/

This is a textbook example of US/CIA dirty tricks, alongside the US backed coup attempt of 2002-
create an arms embargo on the offending country (usually as punishment for putting people b4 corporate profit) then shout 'Global communist conspiracy' when the country in question turns to other suppliers for their military hardware as per many examples in S America in the 80s.

I suppose that NATOs expansion into Eastern Europe (contrary to their agreement with Russia after the collapse of the USSR) and the proposed US missile defence system on Russias doorstep are completely unrelated to Russias present day belligerence in your eyes, Sir Robert?

'Is *Russia* reverting to Cold War 'create a crisis' tactics?' hmmm

YIPES...This is so scary to me...

Personally, I thought that Russia was sort of trying to stay out of all of this mess...come to find out they are right back into it like 1960's!!!!!

OMG!

Pete M. makes a valid 'Cause & Effect' point on the reverse side of this coin, that can lead to an escalation over time!

Imagine this leading toward a regional disaster between the U.S., Colombia and Venezuela, then possibly the near-future revealing of longer range missiles overnight ----

Is it possible that the end result to these evolving escalations could be a repeat of history, where the brinkmanship breaks down under weak-minded political leadership on all sides ---

That disintegrates into an extremely unhappy and violent ending this time!>?

Unfortunately, I do this Yes....I personally feel (sadly) that this world is going NUTTY, but Russia (in my opinion) just wants to make a $$$$ so it will do anything it can, like selling missles...

But, that said, the fact, that they are selling them right in my backyard really flips me out.

It sounds crazy, but i supect those missiles are more of a status symbol than anything else. In other words, i doubt they will ever be put into use. It all has to do with an old opressive oligarchic regime in neighborland Colombia. Land deposition and native population displacement have gone on and on and on- for quite a while now in Colombia. The drug cartell is very strong there (not to mention cola, etc). The US of A have been alluring Colombian chiefs and would love to attack Venezuela...and...land ownership power disputes, chaos, chaos, chaos. maybe those missiles will bring order, maybe not.
Latinamerica is in flames. They need rain.

Really don't want them there, be it "status" symbols or whatever.

They fact that they may be there and some Nut Case may decide to set one off is quite disturbing to me..

actually, you're right marilyn - it is very disturbing to think that even Venezuela got hooked into the weapon/war business. a very bad bad stomach-upsetting move. basta ya!! it can drive one nuts as well...

This is a repetition of teh same old U.S./first world capitalist propaganda.

First of all, the USA and capitalism killed more people domestically and internationally than the regimes of the USSR and Mao's China did (in the time period when those regimes existed, and of course in general, too).

Secondly, the capitalist system in India alone killed more people than the regimes of the USSR and Mao's China did (in the time period when those regimes existed, and of course in general, too).

As for the "Cuban Missle Crisis", it is a load of hypocritical U.S. propaganda. Before the "Cuban Missle Crisis", the USA had nuclear missiles in both Greece and Turkey, aimed at the USSR. The USSR was merely trying to make things even, by installing missles which could reach the USA. But U.S. national chauvinists cannot handle parity, equality between nations - they alwatys want to make things one-sided and dominate everyone else.

And when it comes to Venezuela, the USA supported a coup on April 11, 2002, and the USA has a long reputation of attacking and invading other countries (directly or by proxy), e.g. Cuba (Bay of Pigs invasion in 1960s), Guatemala (against the democratic government of Arbenz in 1950s), Nicaragua (U.S. supported the terrorist "Contras"), Grenada, Panama, Haiti (within the past 10 years), etc., etc.. Colombia and Brazil both get much more military equipment than Venezuela does, and Venezuela is on par with Argentina and Chile. But Venezuela is the only one that the USA has threatened amd supported a coup in.

Its all because they nationalized their oil sales instead of selling out to the big oil companies. They are just like any other country that wants to defend themselves.

What Pete M said. If you don't pay attention to the backstory then anything can be made to sound scary. Note the real crux of the 'problem' : Russia is making sales of arms the US marketing scheme isn't servicing. Danger Will Robinson! To whom ?

It isn't that is is totally scary to me, because I have been watching all of the fighter jets here flying around doing missions in Miramar. Know that we are prepared for anything.

What truly upsets me on this, is the fact that is is ALLOWED and is happened, I wanted to know what is the President doing about it...So, far I have read nothing, which does not make me happy at all!!! (Just a little note in the paper!)

Yes, every Country should be allowed all of the F#### missles that they want to purchase, but, frankly don't like the idea that nothing is being put on the news like JFK did during the Cuban missle deal, and the nation is kept in the dark. Also, don't like any Country having any of these weapons period...wish they never started to do all of this JUNK!!!!

This is important, the United States, in my humble opinion is in a sad state and we are under a threat due to what we have become involved with, watching out for other Nations etc. The fact that we got on the defense after 9-11 just reinforced it in my mind...and the fact that Obama isn't letting people actually know on the T.V. about what is going on (except for his Health Care) really does make me upset. There are other things that area also important to all of the United States People. Not going to get into all of the issues, but, personally I do think he should be making an announcement that this is taking place just for people to be aware about.

You can scream at me, yell at me etc...We all have our opinions!!!!

For info - as of 2009 USA has 7 army bases in Colombia. who is aware and who isn't is the mayor question. Uribe from Colombia seems to be the next Noriega (Panama). If Colombia can have all kinds of tanks, missiles, weapons etc because of friendly ties with the US of A, then why can't Chavez have his missiles. Unless he becomes Gandhi. Oil is loosing ground because nobody wants that bloody goo anymore. Coca, poppies, just fields (apparently Argentina was not enough) etc is what's of interest.
It was the Monroe Doctrine back in the 50's which left Latinamerica completely open to any US of A invasion. When has Canada done such thing? When will US of A stop?
Latin America is in flames.

Sep 2009 Jimmy Carter, a former US president, has said that Washington knew about an abortive coup against Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, in 2002, and that it may even have taken part.
