The Russians had already learned that fighting a war in the Afghanistan mountains was a 'no win scenario', due to the endless underground tunnel networks, and an endless supply of opium trade financing revenue. Be Sure to read posts #8, #14, and #16.

Posts #8, #14, and #16 combine the answer to the question as to why the Taliban chose Afganistan for their base of operations.

Another debate member 'Nono' is asking the question and I am attempting to condense an answer for her.

Afganistan is the place to be... under ground tunnels, they have an advantage knowing the area, and what's more all that opium... makes Bin Laden a happy man...

I doubt that Bin Laden is still alive, he is being used to frighten the American people into surrendering the Constitutional. The war in Afghanistan is another war for oil -- this time oil from Central Asia, to be piped through Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Arabian Sea.

It is always good to have an enemy and a war that the public is concerned about. It keeps people from thinking about other things. People need to be concerned about big problems like terrorism if the government wants to make new laws that under normal conditions were not possible to get through. Besides that war is always good to put influence on other countries and make them dependent on the one "who came to help". Endless conflicts ensure an ongoing and lasting influence on a country.

Even though II personally do not have anybody that I love involved in this ghastly war I shudder each time that they release casualty figures.I HATE WAR. I would like this war to CEASE. The conditions that they cope with over there must be like living in HELL.Every war is HELL.My father was a Gallipoli veteran & my older brother was in NEW Guinea & both of them refused to talk about their experiences.PLEASE PLEASE let there be an end to the sacrifice of WAR.
