Care2 Network Appears Biased About Front Page Selections

Feel free to vent your frustrations here! Depending upon the subject material, as to whether your news submission goes to Front Page or not, on this it may depend. Certain topics appear to be denied promotion even with 34 notes in 24 hours.

Of course, I don't know for sure what it is - but I would think that there is no "set" number of notes requires to allow an article to reach the Front Page. Rather, I would think that it would just depend on whether a particular news story was in the "Top Five" or "Top Eight" or whatever at any given time, no matter how many notes it has.

Maybe, maybe not.

Well,Lesley, there is a "formula" but Care2 won't disclose it; depending on the article/category and the numbe rof votes in the set numbe rof minutes/hours ...

Care2 has said it's too complicated to explain to Care2 users.

Hmmmm...

I am not absolutely sure, but when multiple accounts tell the same trend of appearance, then the statistical odds of being accurate increase tremendously!

This article is dedicated to those who have already confided in me as a friend.

Noted thank you, Myself, I refuse to even try to campaign a story or petition. I someone wants to run with something I have sent them I'm all for it, but I don't need the hassle and neither does my fibromyalgia!!!

Someone (Anonymous) just messaged me a warning: 'Danger, been suspended several times for criticizing Care2'.

Gee, I had no idea what I was doing, I just wanted to help those who started my curiosity in this direction.

Care2 presents itself in a good light, and I hope they are living up to their end of the bargain!

I can't say for sure, but I felt one of my stories got promoted very quickly. I'm not complaining mind you, I loved it. But I don't get hung up on whether a story makes it to the front page or not. I do remember that this one story happened very quickly. I post to inform. IMHO, if people are using the network, many more can be reached than by your story getting on the front page.

How many members don't even get to the front page to check the front page news on a daily basis?

Deborah: Excellent point! Sometimes I suspect only 20-30 people are actually noting on the Front Page per day.

Good luck Robert...Isn't that all that life hinges on?...Your story (as of now) is still HOT...Does it really matter?...Some people will always read the author in the belief that the topic is not garbage...

Live with that...Not always noted but always read...Cheers, David.

It seems to me that the magic number is 30 notes in 24 hours, sometimes this is not the case, but most of the time it is, and we all know Care2 is glitchy.

I rarely go to the front page I just look at stories that are sent to me and then I just hunt around to see what else looks interesting to me and I check them out. There is a good chance that there is a bias in one form or another on care2--I've just been smacked in the head tonite with bias in areas that I didn't think I would find it--and these weren't even on care2, imagine that. So I quite imagine that care2 runs about the same as the rest of the world.

This very submission just went to Front Page with 19 notes, in less than 3 hours!?

I believe you about glitchy!

Aba Tonsali; I did not mean to portray the beginning and end of life revolves around Front Page -- It does not --

However, it does revolve around doing the right thing, when everyone around you is doing the wrong thing, and trying to get you to follow suit!!!

Thanks to all who have, or are yet to participate in this search for truth!

I have never figured out how 'front page stories' work. Some stories I am sure will make it to front page, don't. Others that I don't think will, do. Go figure. (I'm not even talking about any that I post either. Just others that I have read, and NOTED). Thank you Robert.

What blue said, and I agree for most categories it's around 30 but in some categories if a post gets 20+ very quickly it's front page before it even reaches 25. Articles appear to debut at the top but quickly fall into ranking based on their popularity relative to the length of their existence.

I fear though that (what I consider) the spammers note each other or even have a ring of accounts dedicated to promoting stories that aren't even appropriate to the category onto the front page. Once it hits the page there are many who will click on just about anything, further propogating the illusion that said SPAM is even worthy of a click.

I'm convinced that there is an unbiased and fairly complex algorhythm but that flagging can effect ranking and even prevent a story from ever showing up. I have to wonder too if one's number of friends or prevelance on the page effects their ability to make the page. Were this not so wouldn't Cate stay at the top of every category?

My advice for Robert, since I'm satisfied that anything I post that is of worth does have its 12 minutes of fame, is that I don't think he's got enough friends (not IRL friends but the people in the box). I solicit almost 200 people by email, the same way Robert does. If he's not getting enough hits, maybe he just needs more people to ask.

Robert forget the frontpage! The number of people you reach is rediculous, and i have seen so many great stories from people that should have been on the front page....

I guess that the system works with a great formula that is too complicated to explain and
sometimes stories get some help to go to the frontpage....sometimes stories that should have made it do not get the attention at all....

Many people just read the news that you send them..... and since very much of the news is spam by empty profiles i cannot blame anybody for not noting newly submitted news!

I have tried and tried but Care2 does not listen!

Who cares about the Care2 frontpage? 9 Million members making a difference? Not realy the Care2 news community is a small group of ????????

It takes 35 people to note a story, so you can get a gold note. Also I was clicking on the stories on the front page to note, & when I went to the news page it showed I didn't note it. Another glitch for care2

I have not heard about the algorithmic formulae for noting submissions, but have experienced a bad case of the 'glitches' lately!

I am beginning to agree with those who profess that the Front Page is not worth the worry, and to just be glad to submit and have friends!

This comment is dedicated to those who inspired this work, that built upon my own suspicions.

It is a healthy social mechanism to discuss and debate a community issue, and thank you for your participation.

Aba ~ I select my pages like you: I rarely check the front page for news articles because I get so many emails from my friends to look at theirs. I noticed when my stories go front page it seems that several people noted it within the first few minutes of posting it, not necessarily the total number over a set period.

Is it possible that "certain viewer" selections cause a higher ranking? Are posts with images more likely to be viewed?

I haven't been concerned with how many front page views I get. Is there a benefit to it? Guess I'm out of the loop on this. Thank you, Robert.

I was one of those curious people robert is referring too. it's not about the fame and glory of making it to the front the page. it's not about the golden ticket prize -although personally i would love a free trip to the chocolate factory.) below is a comment i left on another news submission of roberts. it certainly may be just a "glitch". (of course porn and things of that nature should not go to the front page, most of us agree on keeping a respectable community) it's when we don't discuss the small things at all -little by little we do loose the important things like equality. i am in no way stating that this is the case here -but i am stating that it's always okay to do a little digging or ask for other opinions -no matter how trivial it may appear to others or may actually be -it's a human right in itself.

"you know robert, i have wondered the same thing. it shouldn't matter what it is about, if enough care2 members promoted it -then it should automatically get bumped to the front page. i've had business pieces make it before they ever hit 20 notes, some never making it after hitting 30 within the same exact time frame(better pieces in fact). one time i even had a piece of out dated news make it to front after 2 days -i was embarassed -i even had an updated piece regarding it never make it, with more notes mind you. i thought after 2 days they lost their shot. -and if i don't like somebodies piece -i just don't note it -i wouldn't want them suppressing me -so i don't do it to others. it should be fair whether we agree on the article or not -it should be equal rights -always. i have noticed since the politic news section has become swamped it does take at least 30 notes within the one day limit -that has been consistant for me over the last month. but even the animals section seems to be based on "depends". "

p.s. this is not an "it's all about me" issue for robert or myself. after my first golden the thrill was gone, lol. this actually started over a conversation about mccain/palin and anti-obama news note making it to front page with enough notes supporting it's right. seeing that i am an obama supporter -one should be able to acknowledge this is about equality not what the article is pertaining too from my personal view.

I haven't cared if my submissions make front page or not. What I care about is getting the article's content out there for people to read if they want to and about sending it to people whom I thought would be interested in reading them and in the content. I rarely if ever send them out to over 20 people at a time per article. Of those 20 maybe 10 or 12 will look at them. If the aticle makes front page--good, if it doesn't, I don't get upset over it or loose any sleep about it. It's out there if people want to read it and that's all that matters to me.

This concerns the integrity of the Care2 site, and nothing else -- No more and no less!

It may be the computer algoritm formula, if there is one -- Have you seen it in action?

If these isolated events are a Care2 glitch, then the computer itself is biased against certain political and sexual preference topics.

This seems unusual behavior for a computer, but it is no doubt possible. A news article: "Care2 Computer Becomes Sentient" (Self-Aware)???

Pehaps the Care2 computer has decided to vote for Obama (defending against pro McCain submissions), and perhaps further still, this computer has recognized it's true Lesbian or Homosexual self-awareness (as a revenge it fights against anti-sexual submissions)!?

The odds are against the above, and in favor of human manipulation!

I do think making the page is important b/c that's where many of us find things from outside our little networks. That's why just getting it on the page guarantees it will at least double its exposure. We're not posting news for our personal gratification. We're posting it because we want someone else to know about it.
IDK if the algorhythm needs tweeking, but I do give muchos kudos to Randy for conceiving C2NN. It is the best news source I have because its contributors are in large part more like-minded with me than those of any other news source and almost unanimously, they are not directed or censored by corporate interests.

Lindsey O. (209)

Go Vote - using Care2 as your "best news source" has to be done taking into account the fact that any news item posted is only as good as the original source from which it is culled. Some news items may be links to the New York Times. Others may be links to Natural News. There is a world of difference between the two.

Everyone; I have re-read this entire comment line, and agree with everything that has been written; except where it indirectly infers that I am concerned about getting on the Front Page ---

That is 'not' the catalyst for this article submission!

The well-being of the Care2 Network is my main concern, and this is probably the reason why I have not been suspended from this site!!!

Go Vote; You have the best handle on this situation according to your last comment!!!

Wow, they pulled it. But now the top environmental story is some rediculous tripe about sleeping at work. Same old crappy drawings and article about total BS just to direct traffic toward ads. I hate to see care2 abused like this!
Some censorship is just necessary lest this become a wasteland of idiocy like most of the internets.

Anytime you see an article which is just spam (ads), you can always flag it as spam (I ALWAYS do that) and Care2 will quickly take it off the forum. Sometimes when I check in the morning, over half of each page will be taken up by spam pieces.
