There are many unknown dangers involved with upping the ante, when it comes to high-energy particle collisions!

The 'Standard Model' is shrouded within a haze of theoretical-mathematics (intelligent guessing), and the CERN LHC has been based-built upon the current interpretations of this model!

Even Stephen Hawking, the smartest man on Earth, is not certain as to the final outcomes, and this should make you at least think about the consequences of non-action!!!

Stephen Hawking has worked extensively with Quantum Physics, and is the world's leading specialist in regard to Black Hole Formations.

If anyone should know, it would be him, and he is not absolutely sure!!!

Pamylle G.; Your a Life-Saver!!!

The scientists are extremely trained at CERN LHC, but they operate within pressured cliques, that if they try to 'red-flag' anything suspect in regard to the 'Standard Model', then they are forced to conform to the current scientific belief-system; or other more career-harmful suggestions are made!

CERN LHC has been built outside of jurisdictional controls, and this is 'not' by accident, it has been thought-out to the inth degree!

The CERN LHC Independent Safety Assessment Group (LSAG) is completely controlled by CERN affiliated organizations, and has 'no' independent thoughts in regard to the LHC!

I have debated this topic since 1988, and many proponents concerning the decade of LHC pre-planned, high-intensity precision-energy upgrades, would have us believe that they are no more dangerous than 'two flashlights turned towards each other'!

Sorry, Not Buying!!! One thing of most concern:

The United States Government is operating in semi-cognito through BNL, Fermilab, USN, DOD, & DOE offices, that raise questions as to motivations!!! (???).

All paranoia aside, there are deeper objectives here to be looked into by professional investigators.

Like many topics of our time, there are more questions than answers, and this can lead one to speculate accurately toward a possible mega-disaster!

CERN LHC does not know 'exactly' what they are experimenting with, and this is not a confidence builder!!!

Hm... do you suggest Hawking is against CERN LHC????

Joanna D.; Not Exactly Against. According to the small amount of media coverage concerning Stephen Hawking and the LHC, it suggests to me a limited endorsement.

He visited the CERN Theoretical Research Unit one time, and has not fully endorsed the LHC publicly.

Yet, there is no negative press exposure either, which is odd, because Hawking's theoretical research is directly connected to the LHC's quantum mechanics. Both venues run parallel, then converge, therefore impossible 'not' to involve Stephen Hawking directly!

I remember the press alluding to his statements
of Good Luck, and that he was optimistic of amazing discoveries, if all went well.

It was anticipated for a complete and full endorsement, which has never been experienced!

One of the main arguments against the LHC, is the possible formation of micro-black holes (MBH), and the counter-argument is that black hole formations shall dissipate due to 'Hawking Radiation'. This is an unproven theory, and not by any means an axiom within quantum physics!

Stephen Hawking is veiled within a multi-layered cocoon, protected by his staff of assistants, which help to shield him; so to know what is in his inner-most heart, is not knowable from here!

However, his known actions and inactions, can be interpreted as his personal level of 'uncertainty'.

This uncertainty, as with many other physicists, revolves around an incomplete 'Standard Model', and the unproven 'Hawking Radiation' postulate.

I am sure that CERN wanted him to give a worldwide public, full advertising endorsement, in order to insure further expense funding, which never came!

An uncertainty at best!

Robert I didn't watch/read latest news from the opening and inaugaration. What I know about Hawking opinion is that he is sceptical but enthusiastic - even people who are against LHC blame Hawking!! (including those who thought 10/09 then 21/10 were the dates of "the end of the world")
Maybe he is just worried his theory won't be proved by LHC experiments?
"9 September 2008: "The LHC will increase the energy at which we can study particle interactions, by a factor of four. According to present thinking, this should be enough to discover the Higgs particle, the particle that gives mass to all the other particles," Professor Hawking told the Today programme.

Previous particle accelerators have failed to find it, but because the LHC is so much more powerful, there is hope that it will succeed. Even a failure, Professor Hawking says, would be exciting, because that would pose new questions about the laws of nature.

"I think it will be much more exciting if we don't find the Higgs. That will show something is wrong, and we need to think again. I have a bet of $100 that we won't find the Higgs."

He believes another important discovery that the experiment could make is superpartners, or particles that should theoretically exist. They are "supersymmetric partners" to those particles we already know of at present.

"Their existence would be a key confirmation of string theory, and they could make up the mysterious dark matter that holds galaxies together. Whatever the LHC finds, or fails to find, the results will tell us a lot about the structure of the Universe," he says.
Some fear the experiment may create a black hole that will tear the Earth apart - there have even been two last-minute legal attempts to stop it - but Professor Hawking dismisses the idea that the LHC is in any way dangerous.

"If the collisions in the LHC produced a micro black hole, and this is unlikely, it would just evaporate away again, producing a characteristic pattern of particles. Collisions at these and greater energies occur millions of times a day in the Earth's atmosphere, and nothing terrible happens."

Let face the fact LHC is what scientists had been waiting for. The project in US had been abandoned because US needed money for war (I saw opinion that US scientists knew it was dangerous - ridiculous)

I don't say you are not right feeling it could bring some dangerous "side effect" or even would be used to make a new, total mass bomb (anyway our civilisation can't exists forever) - Robert, people are so greedy that they will always use any scientific discovery to destroy something; it's not only LHC what is a danger for the planet.

I'm not afraid of LHC, I'm not afraid of science, I'm afraid of PEOPLE.

Joanna D.; I wholeheartedly agree - People are the real danger here. The decisions they arrive at will ultimately affect us all!

I have had direct dealings with CERN LSAG, and if you were in my shoes, you would know everything is not being made public. There are many concerns they are facing internally, and outside of the general international jurisdictions.

I am basically a researcher, and I can tell you for a fact, that all does not add up logically in regard to the operation of the LHC.

One oddity that puzzles me; Internet reference material concerning the basic initial design for the LHC, has come up missing. Just after an LSAG conversation that I had with them, and the topic I was inquiring about was:

The LHC was originally designed and built, from an application found within the original Nikola Tesla manuscripts from around the turn-of-the-century! These manuscripts became the direct property of the Department of the United States Navy, and were eventually moved to the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), for the sole purpose of LHC assisted design standards and research!

When I search the Internet now, there are only traces of this information, and that's all that is left - a trace. Even my reference storage e-mails now read: 'Sorry - This Page Is No Longer Available' -- or -- 'Sorry - This Page Is No Longer Found'!

It was a good thing that I double-checked the urls I was going to post here, because now they are virtually empty, and you would have wondered why I had posted them at all.

I have a theory; whenever I research a topic, and it yields more questions than answers, then something is 'wrong'!!!

As I said I don't think you aren't right, just for me it's nothing unusual.
We don't know what actually is happening in NASA labs, military labs, biotechnology labs around the world.
And it happens all the time when you have questions/complaints about something, later you'll find:'Sorry - This Page Is No Longer Available' -- or -- 'Sorry - This Page Is No Longer Found'! - that means the info was not true or they decided it shouldn't be published...
Anyway keep an eye on CERN and let us know any news from them. I'm very interested in physics but recently I have a little time for it.

TO THE READER:

Conjectured Example:

If the CERN LHC should rip some unknown quantum barrier-fabric, thus releasing 'Supersymmetric Partners' exploding exponentially from a possible parallel dimension, then the CERN officials are not qualified to handle an unknown magnitude event of this nature!

This all hinges upon the current interpretations of an uncertain 'Standard Model'.

Gee, I sure hope the 'Standard Model' is really close to being accurate, because if it is not . . . . .

STOP THE LHC!

Patricia M.; Complete protonic reversal - matter v/s antimatter annihilation is not impossible.

Experts may calculate the odds of this happening at 250M to 1, so for them to 'greenlight' go-ahead these experiments, then they must feel 'Lucky Today' -- Well Do You?

The LHC is currently under repairs from an accident, that will cost between 21-35 million dollars, and will be off-line until approx. June 2009.

The LHC has so far, only begun testing at lower 'safety-test' trial levels of energy; however, now scheduled for the end of 2009 or into 2010, they will be increasing towards 'real' full-power, with a decade of precision energy upgrades beyond that!

In other words, they have not done anything extraordinary as of yet; other than aligning the lower energy test-beams, which resulted in a magnetic solder-joint breaking, and causing massive damage to the helium coolant systems!

As I have mentioned in an earlier comment: the main dangers reside with them switching from protons to heavy Lead(Pb) ion collisions at 14TeV (trillion electron volts). This is where the truly unknown comes into full-play!

It is an educated RISK at best!!!
