Here's a perspective i dont see all that well represented in the press:

Although I think there are certain aspects of Obama's "stimulus plan" that sound quite promising (500 billion for new jobs rebuilding America's infrastructure), how come nobody is questioning the notion that rebuilding an inherently flawed infrastructure is certainly contrary to environmental and sustainability notions? Re-building roads will obviously contribute greatly to greenhouse gasses, right? And if the 500 billion comes in the forms of trade-loans from China, then are we merely "stimulating" our economy for the purpose of supporting a consumer-based economy where we buy cheap plastic crap from China? Is this "forward" or "backwards"?

Will we ever be able to make the transitions towards true sustainability while their is still time and resources? Or will we continue down the path of attempting to move "backwards" in terms of strengthening Nation (Empire) until both time and resources have completely run out and we have backed ourselves into a corner with fewer and fewer options?

I would love to see that 500 biullion go towards improving every Bio-Region in North America's ability to produce 90% of their needed goods and services. This is the only True "security" that North America could ever hope to move towards. One in which every region can be truly sustainable, without a need for input from the state or Fed, or goods shipped from far away on tax-payer subsidized petrol.

More Roads? The national highway system exists solely to transport military and civilian population in times of war, as well as allowing for the efficient movement of consumer goods. This is not a direction I hope the population embraces without question. but there is little doubt in my mind that we will have much choice either way.

Walkadelic - I agree with you! I hope of this money isn't going to be pumped into just maintaining the status quo and the big corporations that have a vested interest in doing things the same way they've always done them. But we have a place to voice our concerns and suggestions, that in itself is a huge change!
