WTF?!? Disgraceful, hateful behavior. This country becomes more racist by the day, or is it just that scumbag bigoted racists no longer feel the need to hide their true natures as much? They are ignorant, selfish fools. This disgusts, frustrates and saddens me. I am a 52 year old white male born and raised in Kansas, btw.

The worst part about this was that this couple frequented this church on a regular basis, and because of intimidation of being fired from the congregation, the pastor was forced to cancel their wedding at that particular church one day before -- after invitations, and all other arrangements, had been made.

(Frankly, the pastor should reconsider if he wants to continue "God's work" amongst such a pitifully Godless lot of blatant hypocrites!)

Its very sad that those who were not against it could not/did not stand up to those who did oppose it..People who pull this need to be told to sit down and shut up..If they don't like it they should leave..
What makes it even worse..this is supposed to be a house of "god" What a bunch of cowardly racist hypocrites..

Thanks Frank..and thank you Carole for the forward..

This is so wrong!!! How dare they?!! I certainly would not frequent a church (or organization) that 'preaches' hatred', towards anyone, young or old, pink or purple. It doesn't matter. What matters is this church is preaching intolerance, prejudice, and hatred towards a loving couple!! I definitely signed. TY, Frank and Carole for FW.

The Pastor should not of caved in to the minority, and gave a lesson on what it truly means to be a loving Christian. Too many people are not Walk their Talk. It seems in so many ways we are going backwards, Mississippi is also on the verge of being the only State where no safe legal abortions can be given. One of the poorest States, is no wonder, seems that they haven't gone that far from the Plantation days, a few rule at the expense of the many.

Thanks for the petition Carole, I signed most certainly.

Noted and signed (I assume that we are referring to the petition in the comment by Jim Phillips).

There is nothing controversial about this because both people are of the same race. On the other hand, I have contradicting views on mixed-race marriage. On the one hand, I would like to live ijn a world without national barriers and a total mixing of the races (and I find people of Asian and African origin particularly attractive). On the other hand, I would like to see the preservation of ethnic diversity. In practice, what I think does not matter since my friends and potential partners find me and I always end up stuck in an all-white environment (even when I was living in Australia). For the same reason, I do not even get to choose my sexual orientation - I am attracted to both major genders (and enything in between) but whenever I show interest in anyone, the answer is always "NO"!

Simon Validzic (244)
Sunday July 29, 2012, 6:46 pm
Regarding my comment above, I did not mean that there is nothing controversial about the decision by the members of the church but that there was nothing controversial about the mariage.

Carole Sarcinello (338)
Sunday July 29, 2012, 6:55 pm

Simon, I understand. When I first ran across this petition in the PetitionSite yesterday, I automatically assumed that it was a bi-racial marriage (especially, since it was in Mississippi -- who STILL refuse to accept that they lost the civil war . . . let alone, accept the Civil Rights Act of 1964 -- over 100 years later).

Edwin, I loved your petition comment:
"I was not aware that the message that Jesus preached was one of hatred, bigotry and ignorance. In the words of the inimitable Phil Ochs ♪♪"Mississippi find yourself another country to be part of"♪♪"

The fact that this couple regularly visited this church, but (even by the haters) were "tolerated," but only until it came time for their wedding (which, obviously, intimidated the haters into fearing that some of their friends may consider also joining) is the reason I dislike the use of the term "tolerance" in steering people toward acceptance of others' beliefs.

The term, itself, implies that one group is merely overlooking -- without understanding or accepting -- another group that it finds distasteful.

Only 66 signatures out of a 1,000 needed and we have almost 20 million members. What's the problem with our members? This is something that needs to be e-mailed to the President and I bet you that He would see the couple was Married in That Church. Are the Church members so called Christians that are KKK members? That church is not a Church of God when it reject marriage cause of one's color. Shame on them and may justice prevail to the couple that wants to be married in the Church.

I put two comments in here and both of them "disappeared"... Here is one of them:

It was a small but vocal minority that objected to the wedding, according to Weatherford.

The majority of the parishioners should get together and "oust" the small but vocal minority from Church.

I was the first to note and comment on this article then later, came back when I received a note from Just Carole about this. I was curious about where my comment and note had gone. But ignored that and left a comment that I too had now signed the petition and how I felt about this open hate and discrimination.

All of my comments have been remove, not just here but since I joined Care2.

I do know that some care2 petitions you have to go back and sign them twice to get it to take. I've been watching this for some time and double checking my signatures. You have to leave and come back to check it. I'm hoping this is the case here,, I hate to think these are all the signatures we are getting:(

Kit with computer stuff, all kinds of crazy things can happen. Sometimes when I leave a comment I will go back and check because it did not take. Check to make sure all your browser addons such as flash player and all those guys are up to date. In Firefox, go to addons, plugins, then at top of page hit "check to see if plugins are up to date." Sometimes outdated plugins or browsers will not let us see things on a page even though they may be there, I hope this helps.

Baptist groups call on church to reject racism
Associated Press
Posted on July 30, 2012 at 2:02 PM
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Southern Baptist groups are calling on a Mississippi church that blocked a black couple from getting married under its roof to reject racism.
Leaders of the Mississippi Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention said Monday that preventing Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson from marrying at First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs was wrong. In keeping with Baptist tradition, they want the congregation to chart its own course.
The Rev. Stan Weatherford, pastor of the church, married the Wilsons earlier this month at a predominantly black church in Crystal Springs, a small town south of Jackson. The wedding was moved to the black church after some congregants at Weatherford's church told the pastor they opposed allowing black people to marry in the church.
Crystal Springs town officials plan a racial unity rally Monday evening.

No group of people, let alone a church should behave in this disgraceful way. In Christ there is no East or West, Jew or Gentile, slave or free - we are all one, and God loves each one of us. So those who mistreat others on grounds of skin colour, place of birth, gender etc. are not behaving as God wants them to. Full stop, end.

The pastor Should be teaching the congregation good Christian values..he's obviously not ready to be a martyr...The Baptist Church should pull that church's charter. It's a 50's kinda state I guess, but I didn't know it was 50 B.C...Before Christ!.. It really irks me when "Christians" have NO idea what Christian MEANS!:(

Mississippi Governor: It's 'Unfortunate' Church Blocked Black Wedding
Bryant said the denial of a wedding for a black couple at a traditionally white church has "tainted" Mississippi's image nationwide.
"I'm sure there are very good people of Crystal Springs and in that Baptist church that don't feel that way and are supporting that effort," Bryant said of the Wilsons' desire to marry in the church.
"Look, when people want to get married, we ought to let them get married," Bryant said. "We have enough people that won't go and get married. I want to make every opportunity I can for any couple that wants to, to go get married."
