Hi. My name is, or was, BeetleJuice. I was given this name when I arrived at the shelter. My picture above was not my best hair day. They caught me before I could brush up and the hair fairy had visited the night before. This is the story of how and

I hope the B#### is fired for this. She should be the director of IDIOTS. I hope she has a miserable life and the vet too. RIP Sweet BeetleJuice. Noted with tears. Thanks Simone.

I found someone to take care of a very old kitty in the Seattle shelter, they refused to give her to me because she was too old, my friend would have given her the deserved happy final time, out of the cage, how it should have been...when I raised hell about it, talked to the superiors and made a written complaint and application, the next morning, when I went to get her, they had put her down...people who shouldn´t have certain positions seem to be way too numerous.

I have called the shelter and asked for an independent investigation. They wanted to know who I was. I told them about Care 2 and that a news article had been posted about Beetlejuice. Further, that we are not satisfied with the inquiry made to date as the person lodging the complaint has not been contacted and that the facts are clearly in dispute. Cannot find an email address. If you live in the U.S. pick up the phone and call them. Sign, forward, post everywhere you can on and off Care 2. Let's do something about this. This kind of thing has a devastating effect on volunteers. She deserves an answer and not lip service!!!!! If this is true, I want this shelter director gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This entire thing is just soooooooo sick. This is ONE of many reasons that I adopted one of our three dogs. I knew this would happen to Him sometime. He is very much afraid, mainly due in part to the previous owners, of a lot of things, and when He becomes too afraid, He will snap. Now, I am in a wheelchair and this dog is about forty pounds. Ask me if I would do this again, I dare you!!!!!!!!!!! HECK YES, I would adopt this dog again and twenty more like Him, if I had the space. What in the BLANK is this world coming too. Poor Beetlejuice, and I hope this entire facility is shut down and the animals are all taken to NO KILL shelters. Oh need a rest. Thank you for this story, I think I will go hug my "vicious" (NOT) dog and thank Him for sharing His life with me.

This type of attitude by shelter directors is precisely why we can't save more animals lives. Nathan Winograd, the foremost proponent of no-kill has repeatedly stated that the most important factor in getting a facility to a true no-kill status is the ATTITUDE OF THE SHELTER DIRECTOR. This is but one tragic example of a sorry director. There are many others out there just like her but let's make it our mission to get rid of this one if these allegations are true!!!!!

This is such a sad sad story,Im still crying over it.Sometimes power goes to peoples heads as in this case, but to take it out on a helpless innocent dog ,she is sick.I think the director should be put to sleep let her feel what its like to have the life drained out of you not knowing what you did wrong. This person and the vet should not be allowed around any animal. To do this because BeetleJuice might go to another shelter and might tarnish her name. Her ego needs to be shot down and her along with it.We,ll see you at the Rainbow Bridge BeetleJuice.Sassy,Sadie,Coors.Roxy and Scooby Doo.

This is clearly institutionalized abuse of animals. These are the people that should be protecting them. How do you get a community involved in helping shelters when their tremendous effort ends up in a tragedy like this. They put a lot of love and care into this animal only to have their hearts broken!!!!

Noted, signed and left a very strong comment.
These things happen because heads of rescues often get their jobs because they are managers, not because they love animals. The people who love the animals do all the dirty work, and give the animals the love and hope to hang on in there until their special someone comes along. I worked in a multi-animal rescue for a year and a half, and after I was there a month I saw a beautiful labrador being killed because he was 'kennel stressed'. This broke my heart - from then on, if I saw a dog becoming stressed, I would take it up to my house (on site) and let it live with my dogs in the house, giving it the run of the garden all day while I was out working, and in with me and the rest during the night. They all got re-homed! By the time I left, the whole kennel regime had been improved, and the dogs were getting more human interaction, more time loose in the runs, and not so stressed. I believe that if a dog is not handling kennels well, he should be placed in foster care, which is more normal, and an experienced foster person can help with any behaviour problems.
This story about Beetlejuice really upset me, it reminded me of all the Big Egos in Animal Welfare who put their self-importance before the animals' welfare, and also break the hearts and spirits of the best staff and volunteers.

don't people know this is how shelters are run. if you want an animal, you have to jump on it and check all the time until they are deemed ready to be adopted. i don't think the shelters should kill an animal if they are aware that someone has an interest, but these are busy, chaotic places and things often get overlooked. the same thing happened to me. i wanted a sickly, elderly pitbull and i kept waiting for them to put up the "ready for adoption" sign, but they decided nobody would want it and killed it. i blame myself. i should've told everyone and anyone about my intentions. i should've been there at the crack of dawn every day. lesson learned.

Lucy, it was posted in the petitions, when I read it, it broke my heart and I want to see justice done here. Although the poor little fellow is gone, the lady volunteer who was going to take him home, is owed answers and there should be punishment to those that killed him! I want justice for both of them!

you know these are the very same people that are always asking for money, the very ones that are supposed to be taking care of business. Sounds to me like someone was trying to show someone who the boss was and a poor little dog had to die for heror him to do that. They should be let go immediately, never to work around animals agian, and whoever gave the shot if they knew should be charge with animals crulty and fined... Also not allowed to work with animals again , I know some animals have to be put down, I don't like it don't agree with it, but sadly it happens, but in a case lie this , something is very wrong....... A lot of this would stop if Puppy Mills were shut down, and pet stores had to get their animals from shetlters.. It would help the animals, and it would help shelters. They wouldnt' have to be expensive, but evry little bit would help. Its kinda like supply and demand isn't it . The supply is always there and as long as there are loving people in the world someone will want a pet to share their lives with them... I couldn't live a day with out my cats and dogs, would love to live in the country with a huge, where I could take more of them in.....Most animals are more trust worthy then people now a days.

It should be noted that the shelter director immediately left the facility after handing down the death sentence. The only reason given at all that I can see is that the person taking him was going to rehome him but made it clear that if he did not find a home, she would keep him so either way, he was guaranteed a home! This was not an oversight. This woman talked to the director on Monday. She stated her intention to adopt him and told her what day she was taking him. There is no excuse for this. Period!

Sad story. Was this a "humane" society or a "human" society? Too many power trippers exercise their fantasies on the innocent. This is a prime example. If a dog is required to be "put down" for seeming to be aggressive, what about a humane society director?

Terrible case of showing "power" and the dog has payed with his life!
Thanks Simone for sharing this sad story.

For Dave Hammond: so, every animal who is "ugly" as hell should die and when something is wrong with an animal, even it is a small thing (maybe no tail, one ear, missing a leg) should die too...
I can understand that you have NO friends at all, seeing your page.
You only look at the outside of a living soul, not his/her character and this makes you more ugly then the ugliest animal or human in the world!

This just broke my heart...clearly the vidieos showed he was a lovely dog, not aggressive at all. Why wait all this time, ESPECIALLY as the adopter was in the clinic waiting for him. Someone has to be held a accountable, I wish one of the staff had at least rushed to tell the adopter before the little dog was put to sleep, and let them know what was happening.. Wasted money on neutering, food and housing, vets bills...only to be discarded even though a home was waiting for him. Maybe they need to get their priorities right.....I bet they still ask for donations thouhg to help the upkeep of the Shelter.

I write with utter disgust and heart ache. Having read the story and the transcripts and watched the videos, it is obvious this little mutt was an OKAY woof! To put an animal to sleep simply to prove a point is as low as you can get. The director’s morals are sub-terrainian. She should crawl back into the hell-hole that spawned her. For a board of directors to exclude the videos as evidence is dishonest and against any moral code of ethics. As for the vet: remove his licence for complicity in murder. Make no mistake, this is murder. Their response ‘SILENCE’ is no response. If they had nothing to hide, why bar evidence as proof that BeetleJuice was not ‘dog-aggressive’? Take them to court – and let the truth be heard and seen. They would be hard put to persuade a judge to not allow the video evidence. The director has a self-esteem that floats somewhere around her shoe level, why else would she need to boost it by murdering BeetleJuice?

My pleasure to comment on the REAL situation. Fact of the matter is Manos and one other person could have adopted Beetle at any time during teh 5 months he spent at the shelter and they chose not to do so. A video taken of him being jumped on by one puppy several months ago does not change the fact that he expressed animal aggression according to the staff, and that he was aggressive in a home environment. The determination of aggression was not maded by a veterinarian but by the reports from the adopter and experienced staff members. The day an animal is returned for agggression is usually the day the animal is humanely euthanized for the sake of the animal and for community safety concerns. Instead, he was held two more weeks (miseable and scared) while Manos and one other perosn continued to make empty promises to adopt him. If, at any time, Manos had said she planned to adopt him and keep him in her home, we would have celebrated the adoption. Instead, her best plan was to take him to yet another shelter where he could continue to live in fear. Work presented McMillan describes the absolute misery of these dogs who spend months in a shelter designed for short-term stays.

The real issue here appears to be a power play by a board member and a couple of volunteers trying to make the first truly competent director we have had in years look bad. There was a vaccuum in leadership which allowed certain people to do as they pleased to the detriment of the organization and the animals. This is no longer the case. The shelter is clean, well-run, and has healthy animals available for adoption. The live release rate is UP (a very good thing). Yet, we have a couple of people longing for the bad old days.

A special comment for those making threatening and other calls to the shelter: The staff does not deserve your abuse. They must deal with the results of bad decisions made by irresponsible animal owners every day. I can only hope those of you making death threats burn in a special circle in hell.

One more comment - I am exactly who is listed. I was falsely accused of being the director on another list. I am not the director.

I certainly don't condone death threats to anyone but I for one called the shelter asking for an investigation into this matter. At a minimum, the Director should have clearly stated her position regarding Manon's adoption of the dog before she put it to death if she had a problem with the Manon's plan. That was pure cowardice and she gets an "F" in public relations at a bare minimum. As far as Manon stating she was going to attempt to find another home for the dog, who is to say she might not have found a home for him with no other animals. Maybe it was the dog in the adoptive home that was the problem and not Beetlejuice. Afterall that was the first dog's home turf. From the letter the Board wrote, it seems they have just accepted the Director's explanation without any real investigation into the matter. Any shelter's success in live release, as you put, depends on a good working relationship with their volunteers, at least one of whom, also feels as Manon does based on her comment on the petition. I don't think the Board is doing themselves, or this shelter, or the animals a favor simply by rubber stamping the actions of this Director. The whole thing seems to have been handled in a very underhanded way. By refusing to look into the matter, the Board also gets an "F". Where the lives of those who cannot speak for themselves is concerned, no one is above reproach and that should be the foremost concern of the Board. And frankly, I don't care who you are.

Sue, You hit 'the nail on the head'. I received a letter from the trainer and owner of Leaps n Hounds Pet Training, LLC over the weekend. She states in her letter that the executive director was not truthful about what happened at the adoptive home. She was contacted by the ED when Beetle was returned to go talk to the couple to find out what happened and to see if giving Beetle another chance was an option. The woman explained that their "tenacious female terrier, and Beetle had played real well outside the home, but their dog became very territorial once Beetle entered the home. Her letter will be posted sometime today. Please look for the update on www.seewhoiam.com

Manon, I own four miniature shcnauzers. They are litter mates and mothers and daughters. If one of them walks out of a room and re-enters, they get sniped at. I still have to separate them when feeding or they will fight over food and try to drive one of the dogs off its bowl. Terriers are like that. No wonder Beetlejuice had a problem. They should have seen that one coming! And my last point, which I failed to mention is, had she told you her position, you would have had the option to take Beetlejuice and adopt him yourself. If she had any doubts about compliance, she could have put it in the adoption contract that he could not be re-homed. So many, many, options other than killing this dog!

Manon, good luck tomorrow. I am glad they are willing hear your position and I hope they are willing to put Beetlejuice first in all of this and really listen. Every life is precious whether they are old, have disablities etc. There is nothing that I see that would have justified the actions this Director took. Beetlejuice was not just a number or statistic. I further do not believe he was so stressed and or aggressive that he did not deserve a chance at life. By her actions, he has paid the ultimate price. Let us know how it went.

The more I read the feedback page the more horrendous this gets. It seems there are all sorts of problems with this shelter. Amazingly, I remember reading about the Montgomery County shelter on Nathan Winograd's no kill blog and how they were trying to go no kill. This place sounds like an absolute mess. No one has ever achieved no kill status with an extremely successful foster and volunteer program. They are doing nothing but running the good people off and it sounds like they have problems with everything including sanitation!!! I wish this would get written up in the local paper. This shelter needs to be exposed and the citizens of Montgomery County need to demand shelter reform. Any efforts in this regard?

The horrific stories are about the county run facility, not the Humane society. THe problem with these blogs is the vast amount of misinformation generated. FWIW, the Carrs need to present the entire e-mail from a former employee describing her choice to have hBJ neutered because he was AGGRESSIVE! So goes lies on the Internet.

Thanks for straightening me out on at least one point. I went back and the article was about the "Montgomery County Animal Shelter" that has reduced its euthanasia rate from around 80% to 12% in three years.

If there in so much misinformation perhaps the HSMC should invite Mr. Winograd to do an assessment of the shelter. It would be interesting to see if he agrees with you that the shelter is the pinnacle of success that you believe it to be. What are your euthanasia rates? Are they available to the public?

For those that may not be familiar with Nathan Winograd he is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Redemption. He is a former prosecutor and a graduate of Stanford Law School. In 2001, he took over as ED for the Thompkins County SPCA in upstate New York. He was determined to prove that what had been achieved in San Francisco, a wealthy urban area, could also be achieved in a predominately rural area. He started with a $120,000 deficit. He went from a handful of volunteers to over 200 by the time he left. As he puts it, "From 2001 to 2004, these dedicated volunteers came through time and time again. They fostered nearly 800 pets per year, put in over 12,000 volunteer hours, walked the dogs four times a day, socialized and groomed the cats, did offsite adoptions, maintained the website, and helped with adoptions." They helped with legions of kittens and puppies that found their way to shelter every spring. They saved blind pets, pets with missing limbs, animals hit by cars, and pets with behavioral problems. They rallied and helped erase the $120,000 deficit.

By his fourth year, there was an operational surplus. In the end, nearly 93% of animals were either returned to responsible caregivers or found loving new homes. By the time he left, there were hundreds of animals in foster care, hundreds more traveling to offsite adoptions, a coalition of breed specific rescues, local vetrniary participation, and a community that had faith in its shelter and wanted to support its lifesaving results.

Another quote: "If a communnity is still killing the majority of shelter animals, it is because the local SPCA, humane society,or animal control shelter has failed in its mission. And this failure is nothing more than a failure of leadership. The buck stops with the shelter's director. That is what No Kill requires. There is no doubt about it."

Yeah, I LIKE this idea!!!!!! He is more than qualified!!!! LIES being told????....Let's get to the bottom of it. I'll even volunteer to do a fundraiser on CARE 2 to help pay his fee!!!!! I think an assessment by him is exactly what we need.

YES!! Sounds good to me!! What do you think Lynn G.? If you really cared about the animals and their welfare you would invite Nathan Winograd to the shelter to turn things around. Why did some of the HSMC volunteers quit this past week? Why are the dogs in the shelter not being walked in the mornings anymore? Another policy change??? I'm so frustrated with what's going on there......

Manon in view of the comments being posted from citizens in Montgomery County and the Boards less than adequate response, I do not feel you are going to get an objective hearing about the problems without someone like Nathan becoming involved. I am appalled that there are volunteers actually begging to foster animals and being refused! As the old saying goes,"People with nothing to hide, hide absolutely nothing." Let's see who is telling the truth.

The problem is, they would not welcome Nathan's services even if he offered it for FREE. I want them to know that I'm not going away, and I'm NOT given up!!

Manon, after reading the letter by the trainer, I am angrier than ever!!!!! I wish these board members would get off their lazy, cowardly behinds and address the problem. The citizens of Montgomery County owe it to this dog to see that this never happens again. That is only going to happen if they step up to the plate and admit this was wrong, wrong, wrong and take corrective action. If they don't, it is not only the ED that needs to go!!!! They are stonewalling and I am tired of it. I want to hear from them! And if I don't hear something that satifies me I want to do every thing possible to take it a step further. We gave given them enough time! NO, I am not going away either!

The tone of the Board's letter to you by itself infuriated me but I kept silent on this point hoping that something might be achieved at the meeting in spite of it. Quote: "it won't be an interacitve interview" Just who in the Sam Hell do these people think they are??? The kings and queens of England! Remind them they are in Texas! They better get interactive and fast!

Good work, Manon and Steven!!!!! Very pleased to read the progress you are making in Montgomery County. Beetlejuice would indeed be proud! I hope everyone will listen to the interview with Nathan Winograd at the nokillHouston link. I am so glad to hear he will finally be doing an assessment of BARC. I particularly liked what he had to say about animal lovers crossing all lines, conservative and liberal, and demanding change that starts with the local officials. I so encourage everyone to listen to it. There is some news at the beginning but do hang in there. If you are an animal lover, it is so worth hearing what he has to say. It can all be implemented in your own communities no matter where you live.

I continue to check back and read the updates Manon. Sounds like things are coming to a head and the truth out there for all to see! Good!
