From a distance, the orange tabby looks like it could belong to anybody. But one feature tips Patty Allison off to the fact that it is one of hers. It is the left ear. The missing tip lets Allison know that this is nobody's pet; the cat is feral.

Thanks Simone. I have been feeding Ferals for years. I have raised several feral kittens and placed them in good homes. If I could take them all in, I would.

Sometimes a rescued cat can be a loving family pet for years and then turn back to feral. I had that experience, My vet said that there were many scientific studies on this, The problem seems to occur when an older cat who has had reproductive experience is brought into a household and then spayed or neutered. People have more luck with feral kittens.

just because the tip is missing doesn't make it feral. we have a neighbor cat named pete who loves everybody human but hates other cats even if he is visiting that cat's yard. he has a chipped ear so i think he got in a fight somewhere.

My 3 cats are rescued feral kittens from a hoarder who had no conatact with her cats apart from feeding them. They had huge behavioural problems to begin with even as 4 mth old kittens. They tore the carpets badly, had to learn to use the kitty litter and did not stop meowing and howling for manym months. But they are absolutely fine now as house cats. It is so hard to tame a feral cat even when it is still a kitten.

Many, many thanks, Simone, for this wonderful article! Hopefully this will make many people understand what feral colonies really are about and that there is hope for controlling the over population. It will take years but if dedicated people is those wonderful ladies in the story would get together and share the responsibilities, it's not so hard to manage!
The big problem is, the cost of spaying/neutering ... I truly believe that if the cost for it were kept at a bare minimum (like $10.00 per animal) a lot more people would step in! My big thing is: EVERY vet's office in the country should be compassionate enough to be willing to donate at least half a day per week to this - would make a big, big difference!

Thanks Simone. I've been feeding stray cats here in our neighborhood. Well, i should since they are the mothers of my own cat's offspring. I rarely get to see them though. None of the kittens survived. I hoped to let them in, but my mom and dad won;t let me. But Sahara and Crescent, my two female cats that were once strays, do not bite or scratch. They even let me stroke them.
Stray cats here are friendly, they do not bite or scratch. I guess its because some people feed them food. Feral cats can be house cats. Some feral cats were house cats. It may be that they were abandoned and left to liveon their own that they become feral, or as we call them here, strays. But, anyhow, feral cats can become house cats and may trust people and live with them.
Thanks again.

Believe it or not, all my cats are feral...Their either picked from the streets by my siblings or they strolled in my backyard and decided to stay.
They make excellent house cats though I've had bad experiences though...one of them once bit me for no reason, thank God they're all vaccunated. Any ways...they make good pets.

The cats that are our pets today, were picked from the street...others come home to just receive their meals, but they are feral..we have a "restorante" for them...we are happy for that!!!
