Given that polls about veganism seem to be the cool thing to do these days, here's my first foray into the internet polling world. Check out the poll's format. Isn't it way cooler than the one used by Leiter for his veganism poll

We are far from the days when people had to kiill for food as this was a way of life at that time. We now consider ourselves more educated and in touch with the animal kingdom. They have a society, feelings, emotions and as they are created as we are. They have a right to live out their natural lives in their habitat. We have the knowledge, ways and means to know how to eat to sustain our health and our lives wthout killing animals.

What will happen to all the livestock if everyone goes vegetarian? Nobody will be able to afford or raise cattle and livestock what will happen to them will they go extinct?

The vast numbers of livestock only exist because of intensive farming. Cow 'emissions' are more damaging to planet than CO2 from cars. The world's 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame Dec 2006 est, independent.co.uk. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together. Some livestock would be kept safe and then millions of acres of crops would be available for the starving people of the world to consume.

I think most people ignore the cruelty that is involved in rearing and butchering animals or they believe they are isolated cases. The fact that it is not necessary to kill animals to live and live well makes it a barbaric act in my opinion.

What will happen, Jamie, according to many zoologists (sorry, I don't recall their names) the artificial breeding would cease and the animals will return to their natural state within at least a few generations - and possibly within only two or three. And perhaps the breeding practices of selecting prospective parents for their fat marbling and chopping off the beaks of chickens would stop. The animals probably won't die out; Nature could see their numbers lessen, but they'd probably be OK. It's the endless breeding of animals just so they can be killed that makes me shudder.

I am a vegetarian on my way to veganism and believe that the suffering and killing of any animal is not a justification for any of us to eat any flesh. I am NOT a cadaver muncher.

It would be so coooooool if things returned back to a normal state, where thre was no cruely in farming and wouldn't it be nice if we did not have to consume meat... It will take a mammoth task to change a mindset that has been ingrained in so many for generations

Jamie, they won't become extinct. I would really like to believe when the halt to meat consumption occurs, that monies would be set in trust to let the surviving animals live out their natural lives.Of course breeding would be kept at a severe low. There could be an adoption program also.
It would be a sham if the population said "no" to meat eating and then just slaughtered the survivors.
In a perfect world....

Addendum: The need would be to 'go' Vegan as Vegetarianism still contributes to animal suffering.
