In the past two years, the government of Nova Scotia, Canada has authorized commercial seal hunters to kill up to 4,700 grey seals on Hay Island -- a part of the protected Scaterie Island Wilderness Area. Animal protection groups argued that the Nova Scotia Wilderness Areas Protection Act prohibits the killing of animals in protected spaces.

Now, the Nova Scotia government is attempting to revise the Act to allow the Minister of Environment to officially authorize the slaughter of grey seals on Hay Island.

Humane Society International documented the cruel clubbing of baby seals for their fur on Hay Island in 2008. Hunters herded seal pups, mothers and newborn seals into groups, clubbed the moulted pups with wooden bats, and used box cutters to slice open the seals.

Grey seals have been subjected to extreme overhunting in the past two centuries, and by 1949 were thought to have been wiped out in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. While the population has slowly begun to recover, fishing-industry lobby groups have repeatedly pressured for a cull of grey seals despite any evidence to suggest such a move is necessary.

TAKE ACTION
Please act now to safeguard the Wilderness Areas Protection Act! Tell Nova Scotia's Premier, Environment Minister, and the Law Amendments committee (which will review the bill) that it is unacceptable to authorize the slaughter of grey seals on Hay Island.

Thannxxx... I cannot believe that people would still want to wear fur seal jackets and clothing... after knowing the brutality that those clothes are sewn together with... I find it otally outragesous that this seal clubbing is still allowed..
