Last year, a woman chose not to go to a shelter because she couldn't bring her dog with her. The next day, her ex-partner stabbed her to death.

Many times abusers threaten & or harm other family members children friends & yes pets to intimidate their main target (the woman). They basically stop at nothing to intimidate & control.

Abusers who hurt family members often hurt animals. They are often sociopaths with a history of abusing animals.

This is so sad and unfortunately threats of harm against children and pets are all too common. I'm glad to hear that more shelters are now taking women with pets and that some states are includng pets in protection orders. Is there currently a petition to pressure the states who don't include pets in protection orders to introduce legislation to do so? Maybe someone who is a US citizen/resident might like to start one.

If you know a person is being abused and there are animals in the house you can bet the animals are being abused as well. If you know an animal is being abused and there are people in the house you can bet the people are being abused as well.

Domestic violence is just horrible and it is true, abusers will do everything they can to control their victims and this includes harming children and pets in the family. It's good to know that in the US some states also include pets in the domestic violence protection order and that there are shelters that allow victims to come with their pets. Unfortunately this doesn't happen in my country where domestic violence is still quite high...time to spread the word! Thank you for the article.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to access the link, but I wish to register my support for shelters who allow animals to be included. All sentient beings deserve care and protection. Thanks for the post!

If I was in her shoes I would've done the same thing. If I was in an abusive relationship, I would NEVER leave my dog behind with an abusive person. If someone is capable of abusing a human being, just imagine what they would be capable of doing to a pet. It's extremely sad that this had to happen. Even though it may be "inconvenient" to allow pets into these shelters, I don't think it should even be a question. I went to the article's link and signed the petition on and hope anyone who reads this article will too.

Very sad, but all too true. Happens all the time.

Many women who want to get out of abusive relationships cannot because they are worried what will happen to their pets. Here in Georgia we have Ahimsa House,, which helps victims of domestic violence and their four-legged companions stay together.
