In 1906, Upton Sinclair published his harrowing--and horrifying--exposé of the U.S. meat packing industry. He described the assembly line slaughtering process as "all so very businesslike that one watched it fascinated. It was pork-making by machinery,

That last picture is heart breaking. Here is an extract from the article

The use of so-called gestation crates for farrowing sows is perhaps the most outrageous aspect of factory hog farms. The Humane Society of the United States reports that 80% of breeding sows are confined to these metal stalls (2.0-2.3 ft. by 2.0-2.1 ft.), slightly larger than the sow but too small for her to turn around in. Crated sows suffer from injuries related to the stall, a higher risk of infections, foot and leg problems, reduced muscle mass and bone strength, and mental health problems, including abnormal behaviors, unresponsiveness, and aggression. In a word, confinement in gestation crates prevents sows from doing any of the activities natural to them.

Will we subject human mothers to this horror? I think not. Maybe in a sci-fi flick only.....

this is a sign of the times which will lead to the down fall of human race as these factory farms will likely be the start of a pan epedmic

Ya' know you're right Melissa M. - they DO treat criminals in jail better than they treat these poor animals. Even a convicted child molester/killer on death row is given MORE ROOM TO MOVE than a mother sow !! This is terrible , and I haven't eaten pork in over 2 years now. So sad what things have become .. :(

Come on friends, let's cut through the chase here and stop ALL factory farming, pigs, chickens, turkeys, geese, you name it. It absolutely boggles the mind how these animals are treated and we have the supreme arrogance to call ourselves humane. All revenue coming from these devil kitchens can only be appointed as pure blood money.

Let me remind everyone what being humane means: KIND, MERCYFUL, SYMPATHETIC, CIVILIZING, REFINING.

Recognize any of the aforementioned? Are we truly what we say we are? And don't forget that the consumer is just as guilty as the one who breeds and slaughters.

All animals should have freedom to roam and give birth in comfortable surroundings not be treated in cruel and horrific ways. I think a lot of people in the world don't realize what goes on in the farming world and the others have an out of sight out of mind attitude, and there's the rest of us who do know and do care and stand up to be counted on behalf of farm animals to try help make a change for them . noted thanks Simone

This is wrong. People accept it as Ok because everyone does it and that's just the way things are. That does not make it OK. If you eat it then you own it. There are plenty of other foods to eat. Just because it comes in a neat little package at the grocery store with a pretty picture on it allows people to lie to themselves. This abhorrent practice makes me sick.

I always remember visiting a "petting zoo" many years ago and petting a pig. The pig rolled over for a belly rub and wagged its' little tail just like a dog! So why do people love their dogs and eat pigs?

As long as a person becomes convinced that another being is inferior, they will always be able to justify taking whatever they want from that being, and in whatever manner possible.

That being said, a change of heart... must be the first thing to change.

Love a pig.

Would we allow this to be done to humans? No. Not even the most cruel mass murderer would be forced to stay in conditions as these and then be slaughtered for someone's mealtime delight. That would never happen to a human because it is unspeakabley horrible and sick yet we do it every day, right now even, to animals and then buy their flesh which is so innocently packaged to eat and patronize the cruel meat industry.
No animal deserves this. Before you carnivores among us sit down to a steak or a piece of fried chicken think about what it used to be and how it suffered and died. What if you were in their place and had to live in misery and abuse to be ruthlessly murdered in the end? Would YOU , personally, want that to happen to you? I think the answer would be no. Why then is it alright for them and not you? How are you, being just an animal with a bigger brain, undeserving of such treatment? You aren't . None of us are yet all our lives matter - including theirs.
A good rule to live by is to not do or patronize anything which you wouldn't want to be the recipient of. A very simple yet profound idea to go by isn't it?

The Farm Sanctuary has an email letter to send to your representative, urging more humane treatment of farm animals. Consider checking them out if you care about this issue:

There is nothing good about factory farming. The animals suffer, the meat is not fit for human consumption and the farm is bad for the environment. Rather than contribute to animal abuse, I have decided to become a vegan.
