It's an important step and hopefully we'll soon have legislation that will adequately sentence animal abuse.

He should be in the slammer for at least a year because of his record of cruelty to animals.

I am not pleased with the sentence, it should have been a lot longer. They should title their video " Stupid on the internet"

I know what this guy did was evil, but aren't leopard seals dangerous? Must have have been a baby, can't see anyone having the guts to get up close to a full grown adult.

Hang him! Rid the world of one more piece of dirt!

This guy needs to be kept away from all forms of life. He previously cut off the ears and tail of a pig. He is too dangerous to allow outside an insane asylum. What kind of family do people like this come from? The next time New Zealanders hear from this guy, he'll be accused of serial killings.

before we do anything else, let me throw rocks at him for a while, and drag him by his feet.

Sadly & sickly noted! Shared! I agree with Bob C. on those idiots getting the same treatment they gave that poor seal. Sorry but 4 months in jail just isn't enough. More needs to be done to sick individuals like this.

Sick, sick person. The injury to the seal does not come close to matching the jail time for the guilty man, It is so wrong when people get off so easily when they abuse animals.

The guy who also tortured the pig needs to spend the rest of his life in an institution for the criminally insane. The fact that he wanted an audience for his sadism, and posted it on facebook , shows that he is proud of his ruthlessness. We're witnessing the coming out party of a future serial killer.

Just four months? WTF? Can I go and throw rocks and hit anyone I don't like drag them off into the ocean and if I do get called on it, and I "have" to go to jail, get 3 hots and a cot? Sounds like a sweet deal to me!
What will that dirt bag do next to top off this latest feat of manliness? Seems like when you and a bunch of idiots have the testes to video tape yourself attacking and mutilating animals that you are DEFYING anyone to do something to you. Wow, lookie! I'm more powerful than the law, I'm beyond reproach, I must be GOD!

the damned judge is a total idiot too! Needs witnesses?? Jeezus- the whole world is (now thanks to the tape)--witnesses!!! What did the judge think--this all was Photoshopped???

He's a serial torturer. Use him for medical and chemical experimentation. It's the only purpose he could serve as he proven himself to be a vile, sadistic waste of air and water.

Definately one that needs to be dragged into town by his hair for a public stoning!!! I'll bring James and Sharon!!! We'll be the ones with the biggest rock piles!!! I'll use the biggest and sharpest ones I have. I just don't get how young guys have to prove their big dominance over something by using animals. Pathetic!! Obviously these idiots have brain issues that need attending to. Spineless pieces of crap we can all do without!! Parents should also be penalized for the crappy job they did with these real prizes!!!

I'll be sure to pack my biggest and sharpest for the trip! What's with these idiot young guys that have to prove their big dominance over some innocent animal? Big tough guys!! Are they trying to get famous or prove how cool and strong they are to the world by filming it? Inferiority complexes from their parents or what? I don't get it!! Obviously these kids need their broken heads examined and some serious jail time! The parents should also be put on display for the crappy job they did with these real prizes!!!!

This guy definitely has problems - he's a reoffender, and quite frankly, I don't know what the hell he is doing being able to walk freely in society like he does. Seriously. This wasn't from a burst of anger, this was planned. There should be no attack in the first place, but allowing him to reoffend is the most stupid thing that the legal system allows.

Is the seal okay? Four months in jail I'd say we're making some progress here in getting others aware of how criminally insane these abusers are & it's a whole lot better than the usual slap on the wrist..thanks Simone.

Horrible human beings- even though the sentence was not very long, I am glad the judge was disgusted enough by his actions to give him jail time at all- I am sure the defence attorney was begging for just home detention, but the judge thankfully didn't give in. In the water, the leopard seal could have easily clobbered those jerks, but on the sand, after getting nailed by rocks, it was probably exhausted.

JUDICIAL SYSTEM-how many more times does this man have to torture an animal for you to do your job, how many more times do we have to be put in danger because our society REFUSES to acknowledge this perverse behavior for what it is ? Animal abuse is an issue our society has yet to properly face and deal with for what it is. Beyond what is obvious to us who see violence of this nature to be an unconscionable lack of compassion, unthinkable, even perverse, for those who do not regard animals in the same way, should still take this issue as extremely serious for the fact that it is the gateway to violence. It is time that our nation begin to take animal abuse very seriously. For almost two decades the mental health and neuroscience community research has shown animal abuse as a mental fracture from normal behavior, a corrosion of empathic capabilities; that more times than not escalates if not addressed, usually to extremely violent levels. For the last decade, law enforcement agencies, police and FBI have used animal abuse for criminal profiles and arrests. So I am amazed that we do not have a nationwide cooperation in dealing with this issue, it benefits all to do so. NYT Sunday Magazine article by Charles Siebert, "The link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence is becoming so well established that many US communities now cross-train social service and animal control agencies in how to recognize signs of animals abuse as indicators of other abusive behaviors". It goes on to say, often linking other illegal behavior and or domestic violence. This violent behavior both perpetrated or even witnessed, has a corrosive effect on moral behavior and the ability to restrain ones inappropriate behavior by perverting empathic development, which is essential in emotional self regulation and normal social behavior. For the safety and moral evolution of our society we need to stop regarding these acts as "pranks", "bad judgment" or "property damage" and recognize it for as a serious need of intervention. Not just paying the fines or serving time but in addition and most importantly, treatment. You would think that that is obvious but usually the perpetrators get a slap on the wrist and/or a fine but the real depth of the issue is not dealt with. It is the community's/societies responsibility to address this properly and protect the innocent animals and possible future human victims.

I've said this before. I wish for crimes of this nature the sentence would be for Community service in the care of animals to teach the offender how to behave properly. I am glad the man was tried and punished, but I don't think the punishment is beneficial to either him or society.

As he was a re-offender, why didn't we punish him enough the first time for it tio"take"?? Maybe because the first punishment was a slap on the wrist? What do we do now, plead poor unloved thing and wait till he does this to a child? Because if he's not locked up, he will.At least in prison, even if he doesn't "reform" there will be bigger and badder guys then him, guys who hopefully look upon animal abuse as they (rightfully) look upon child abuse.

As gertrude p. said, "good but not enough".
Unfortunately, there's a plethora of such "incidents" in part because they're treated so lightly by judicial systems.
