THOUSANDS of dogs face a death sentence as a bureaucratic crackdown bans volunteers from claiming animals and placing them in foster homes. The Department of Primary Industries is now enforcing a rule that each carer or dog rescue group be registered

Noted, that is a ridiculous idea, these animals have a right to a second chance in life, I am appauled at some decision making that causes improper care to these animals, most animals that end up in a shelter are there because of failure in the human race to care for them in the first place, in which case we are duty bound to try to give them a second chance of life.

Why demand death when you can encourage lives being saved? This makes no sense.

I do not see a big problem with being registered, That makes one hopefully more accountable , As far as the Rescue to no longer operate out of private homes, I wonder if this is the case of one bad apple spoiling the barrel, Were there issues w/ sanitation, dogs barking ect, Maybe neighbors not pet friendly? I myself with only two very small dogs try to be careful to not let bark excessively outside and they are walked daily & cleaned up after. Its a shame now that so many will be affected.

What does the Department of Primary Industries have to do with saving an animals life by caring people. OH!!! They now want these people to register and then they will have to pay some sort of tax for doing this work from the kindness of their hearts. This is heart-breaking

And what does the agricultural minister Joe Helper have to do with animal care???? To me dogs and cats are not considered agriculture. There are far too many government agencies who seem to stick their noses where they do not belong. I believe that this article just proves that there are to many over-lapping Departments and Ministers involved in the decisions of pets.

What kind of mentality IS this?

This makes no sense! It is disruptive and sets a dangerous precedent for other countries. This means that an individual who is extending themselves out of concern for an animal must declare themselves a business, when all they are doing is temporarily fostering an animal to give it a greater chance at life.

Looks like OZ is becoming increasingly uncivilised as far as animal welfare goes with an increase of the US style kill everything that moves policy. What next euthanasia for the Aboriginals!

Govermental agencies seem to want to just kill-off a problem when they don't have the smarts or common sense to fix it. Sadly noted.
