This chemical is found in all our rivers, streams, lakes and oceans. It has been found in the tissues of all species of plants and animals tested, including humans. It's in our food, houses and every aspect of our lives. It's in pesticides, herbicides,

Please my dear friends, do not sign this petition . Sorry about this, as Monica said, this is a hoax type, just another name for water. Please go here for explanation -

Sorry again, I will ask Care2 to remove it.

Never mind folks, most of us know that this hoax is even older than the internet!

JUST REMEMBER THAT SIGNING THIS INDEED USELESS PETITION ALLOWS EACH OF US TO EARN BUTTERFLIES, AND EACH OF THESE BUTTERFLIES MAY BE SPENT LATER TO SUPPORT REALLY IMPORTANT CAUSES.

So, I say, keep it on and check how many people who'll sign it are still being ignorant of that huge dihydrogen monoxide "scandal", which has been a running joke for the past ten years at least !!!

Signed and noted. I agree with Sylvie. I always cash in my butterfly points. Maybe care2 will erase them because it is a hoax. Oh well.

I thought it was probably another clever bit from THE ONION, but rather than humour or hoax it is more likely a reflection of American ignorance of science.

This does serve a useful purpose; that we should not blindly dismiss all "chemicals" as dangerous. We should try to think more critically, rather than have a knee-jerk reaction to every emotional plea to ban something without examining the consequences

I already fell for this joke once, and I learned chemistry. 'Di' is 2, 'mono' is one. 2 hydrogen, one oxygen.

At the risk of making a lot of people on here ticked off at me, but why does everybody have the mindset that the main issue is to get something for nothing? Most of the people who come to this site are truly caring and want to do some good for the people and beings of this planet. Crap like this is a waste of everyone's time and effort. Like not killing the public menace of mice and rats in a city like New York. THOSE are NOT pet mice. they will NEVER be a pet. they simply spread disease and filth and yes, in some cases even death. Get a grip, people.

I believe the costs of dihydrogen monoxide outweigh the risks, and it is indeed a major chemical in industry, transportation, and the modern diet.

This is the oldest joke, popular long before the internet...I'm not questioning your right to do it, but it brings up a point about activism today. Petitions will continue to lose their impact if frivolous, poorly presented, poorly reasoned petitions are allowed to proliferate. I'm as guilty of being a click-tavist as many are, but I don't want to see this valuable tool die of its own hubris. Even worse, the poll queries that often accompany these petitions are beyond inane or too convoluted to decipher. Is it too much to ask for petitions to be fine-tuned or polished to a standard, or failing that be reconsidered altogether? Could we please have a lifeguard on duty to moderate them for the integrity of the process and the sake of the sanity of the rest of the gene pool? Yvonne Boudreaux

This dangerous and mysterious substance, which in its properties is unlike any other, has been responsible for the deaths of millions of people over the centuries, causing boating mishaps, skiing accidents, drownings, lightning strikes, floods and all manner of natural disasters. It is also responsible for the evolution and proliferation of dangerous aquatic life forms, like giant squids, sharks and jellyfish. Boats have been known to sink in this stuff! Unfortunately, our government has little control over the wide and pervasive distribution of this substance, which is known to produce electrical energy for some metropolitan areas! This is outrageous! Write your congressmen now!

Yes, this "terrible" substance is WATER. This petition was actually circulated at the recent climate summit and the signatory filmed to show how scientists do not necessarily understand what they are doing. I sincerely hope that all who signed it here did so with tongue-in-cheek, because if not, we need some serious education change in this country.

I'm intrigued to know if there is actually somne purpose to this petition, like illustrating that you can get people to sign anything. Worrisome.

Yes, it is worrisome how many people fall for this one without question. Critical thinking has become a lost skill. Are gaining butterfly points really worth the risk of appearing a fool?
