Considering the courage, determination and spirit he exhibits, Mason could surely be a role model for us all. We've often heard it said that dogs are remarkable for their loyalty and their ability to live in the "now," but the story of Mason takes

I am sorry to hear that they family had to give Mason up but I know this will have a happy ending. Mason is in my prayers.

Great story ! Although I completely understand that his former caretakers need to rebuild their lives, I just don't know how they could give up on the lil' guy after everything he has gone through!

I agree with Lisa! How could this family give up on Mason after all of this. Maybe there is a way for them to have Mason fostered until they are able to take him home. This is just too sad. Thankfully, dogs are very forgiving.

Why did this family have to give up Mason - that is so wrong. I would do anything for our pets.

Surely Mason could have lived with a fosterer until his human guardians were able to receive him back into their renovated or rebuilt house?

Absolutely heartbreaking - he walked on bent paws, suffering from multiple fractures, just to get back home to his human family!

I also would have done anything to keep my dogs with me but then I have to say I was not in a tornado. He is awfully cute. I love scruffy dogs. The important thing here is that he is safe and people care about him..

This is one survival story that hasn't made our local news. People always think I'm nuts when I say my dogs are going with me in the event of a natural disaster, but this is why! I have a tent & camping supplies always packed since AL does have a long hurricane season & (obviously) tornado issues as well. Shelters will not take pets, but mine are family members, so leaving them behind is not an option. I can set up a tent anywhere and keep them with me if I lose my home. Their safety is as important as my own, and the loss of even one of them would destroy me.
I'm hoping Mason's family are able to take him back. It kind of sounded like they were unable to care for him & his medical issues with the loss of their home. I can understand that - if you have no home, you can't take care of anyone with medical issues. I am glad that they sought help for him instead of putting him down! that seems to be so many people's reaction. I'll be trying to get further info from the vet re: his situation. He's one awesome, devoted, brave little man & I'm rooting for him! He looks so much like one of my daughters' rescues, Booga, down to the constantly wagging tail, or nub in Booga's case! Thanks for sharing this story & I posted to fb to spread the word.

Update on Mason: if you're interested, he has a facebook page (Mason Thetornadodog). He made local news this a.m. that I missed, but will have a full page in People magazine.

I can't believe they gave him away. he is more loyal than they deserve. After all he'd been through his heart made him endure to be with his family.. people just make me nauseous.

A HERO! Mason is in my prayers, and hoping for a Forever Home for him where his courage is appreciated. A sad story, but I am a believer in happy endings, someone will step up and take Mason home.

Mason WILL be returning to his family after his recovery. they didn't give him away, they simply needed a little help caring for him after losing their home. Vulcan Park Animal Care graciously offered to help them out with his surgeries & recovery while they try to rebuild their home. Everybody flipped out thinking he was tossed away, but it's not true. No one would throw away that kind of love. Follow him on FB or updates at vulcanparkanimalcare.com. I personally give the vets who volunteered their services a huge thumbs up! We have all pulled together during a horrific time here in AL, so hearing great stories like Mason's give all of us hope that things can work out no matter how miserable it is at the moment!

How sad that this family who has such a LOYAL companion didn't keep him. It breaks my heart.

He must have had a good life with those people for him to make his way back home in that condition.

Thank you Julia for straightening that out. I thought that was the case, but wasn't sure.
