A private Christian school has kicked out a 12th grader for being a lesbian. The Master's School in West Simsbury, Connecticut interrogated Rachel Aviles about her sexual orientation, then, when she acknowledged she was a lesbian, they forced her out.

Sickening. A persons sexual orientation shouldn't matter to a school.

Wait a minute here. Expelled for being gay? As far as I can see form the article, the extent of this student's misbehaviour is to make joking "wifey" phone calls with friends.

Here's the thing. Being gay is not a crime. There are absolutely no grounds for dismissal here. She should be readmitted immediately (should she wish to return) and charges should be brought against the school.

This mustn't be allowed to stand. If this is allowed to pass uncontested then what will be next in other schools and institutions?

I'm in my 50's and I'm delighted at how much change here's been in attitudes to lesbian and gay people in my lifetime. There have really been huge steps forward in a short time. Something like this can herald some serious steps backwards. Jump all over it, people.

Mmm. Religious institutions are allowed to make their rules about many things - including their own moral code. I guess the question here is do they expel for other things public schools would not - like being known to have sex, swearing, drugs (even if not on school property), etc. I don't like that religions are anti-gay, but it is in their beliefs, so forcing them to accept homosexuals even in their own religious institutions goes against freedom of religion. So, it's up to the matter of : legally can they expel for breaking their moral code and do they do it for other things.

Now, don't get me wrong - I am all for gay rights and I think homophobia the religions hold is very dumb. But, forcing their hand in matters of their religion (which, face it, christian school is very religious as well as academic) will just lead to resentment. There needs to be a balance - let the religions preach what they want, but keep the legal rights equal.

Petition signed, thanks. This is an example of why I refuse to consider myself a christian; intolerance, exclusion, and hatred have no place in my beliefs.

This is not a Christian act--Jesus would not have done this. Therefore, this school is not true Christian.

I signed this, but I acknowledge that, as a private religious school, little can be done in this case. I hope the girl's parents have enough guts to force the school to return her senior year tuition so it can be invested in her completing 12th grade via Internet home school, and that she can then graduate on time and throw the expulsion back in the Masters School administration's faces by publicly renouncing all ties with their brand of 'Christianity'.

Our right to education should not depend on what we do in the privacy of our bedrooms.

The Catholic Church did not kick out the homosexual child molesters.
The Christian authorities are like the drug authorities.
They both claim to be "experts" on subjects they have never experienced.

Petition signed. I wish educators would just do their job and that is to teach, not to flag or choose who can and who can't graduate. As long as the student does his work, then that is all the teacher should be concerned or expect from the student. They then should be allowed to graduate. No "if," "but" or whatever should matter! Thanks Simone

A class in RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY should be taught from Grade one to graduation, children should be taught that anything is permissible as long as it does not hurt themselves or anybody else. Common sense would dictate that if children are taught at a very early age that every child has their own strengths and weaknesses and that they should use their strengths to help not tease or bully others.
Later on Sex Education should be taught from Contraceptives, Masturbation,LGBT and all forms of sex. Let us face it whether we like it or not children are curious and are having sex earlier and earlier. They should be taught the joys and the consequences of having sex ( Pregnancy,STD, AIDS ) But you say when will this be taught. Cut out Geography or History early on then put it back in and remove Geometry and Algebra. They can learn this in college if need be. I believe this is a solution. Nipping it in the Bud so that Bullying, Sexual Assault, and many others will be greatly diminished if not eradicated. It is my belief that when children graduate with these principals where they are taught RESPECT for themselves and others and to take RESPONSIBILITY for their actions. Within a few generations this world would be a much better place to live in.

Isn't it illegal to ask what a person's sexual orientaton is? She shouldn't have answered their interrogation and should've also informed some human rights group or local gov't. group.

From the article: "Aviles says she was asked to leave the school to avoid being expelled."
Why does this sound like the old Christian heretic trial by water "if she floats she's guilty, if she drowns, she's innocent".

I fail to see why who someone is sleeping with has anything to do with anyone other that those directly involved! My wife and I have been married for 26 years, we found happiness, we have many friends, some are in same sex relationships - good luck to all of them. There is a lot of misery in this world, find happiness were you can, if you find love cherish it, don't give a hoot what anyone else thinks!
