John Sullivan, a lobbyist for the Humane Society of the United States, said Buddy needs a champion. Sullivan helped craft a bill to strengthen Mississippi's animal cruelty laws. Yet, by his own admission, the law was worded poorly and as a result,

Grrrrr..........why is it that people view animals as nothing more than 'property' & not another living creature?? Humans should be well aware that there is a difference between slaughtering a cow for food, and dousing a cow in gasoline, lighting it on fire and watching it burn.

In my next life, I hope I can back as a super smart pitt bull or somethin. If I see an animal abuser, I'll take a bite outta 'crime'.

How could anyone think about this cruel way to hurt an animal. Got to be pretty SICK. This person should not be walking the streets. Pyschiatric treatment. Before politicians are elected, the public should ask them if they are "against" animal cruelty. Of course they will say they care but at least they can be reminded of this when they do nothing to enforce laws to help prevent animal cruelty. It is time changes are made. Most politicians claim to be very religious - then they should know that God did not intend for humans to abuse animals in any way. Stop telling people that fornicating and stealing is wrong. People know this. Start educating people that all of God's creation is to be respected and treated with dignity.

This story almost makes me despair, but we cannot allow ourselves that luxury because creatures like this need us to crowd together in great numbers and with loud loud voices. What that little dog had, his abuser has not - the ability to love.

OK - I have heard back from John - apparently the first answer he sent me went astray.

He says that Buddy's law is dead for this year, and that they will bring it up again next year. Apparently the legislature isn't easy to deal with on a good day, but especially hard to deal with in an election year.

Thanks very much, Michele, for the update. Disappointing news. But all is not lost yet, by the sound of it. Hopefully this was a learning experience and the next Buddy's Law will be stronger for it.
