While congressional Republicans continue waste time with their Wars on Women, Gays, Blacks, Latinos, Students, Muslims, Seniors, and most of all Libruls, not to mention absurd witch hunts, they are ignoring deadlines that, if not met, will cause immeasurable harm to millions. They still don’t care who they hurt.

FOX watchers don't care about student loans since they are uneducated; they just don't get it. I just hope that there are more educated people who will stand up against this destruction of our country, its youth, and therefore its future, than there are the zombies who are against education. Normal middle-class people cannot afford $50,000 per/year educations in good colleges where you have to attend if you want to succeed (its who you know, not what in this world), but to raise interest rates on student loans is simply unbearable and unfair. We need to clean up the ghettos not create new ones.

"…Republicans say they will declare a truce in their War on Students, only if Democrats surrender in the Republican War on Women."

Let's see — Dems cave on the Republican War on Women and lose half the voting people, what 150 million women, and in return, the Republican/Teabaggers will coöperate with a truce in their War on Students which number what, 7 million? Anyone who can't do the math on that one needs to go back to grade 1 arithmetic!

Not only that, this just creates a bigger problem! Now there will be 150 million women without adequate health care etc. And we already know from experience that Republican/Teabaggers consistently demonstrate that they cannot be trusted to honour any commitment except their commitment to the 1% and corporations. And since when did one group become more 'expendable' than another?

The Republican/Teabaggers have to be exposed for the crooks they are and people made to see that the Republican/Teabaggers don't give a rat's ass for anyone or anything that is not related to their 1% and corporations.

Vote Democrat 2012!!!!! Vote Obama/Biden 2012!!!!!

Agree that student loans at a low interst rate are important. Disagree that the gov't should give the money away without insiting on repayment like any other responsibility of being an adult. The real problem here is the awesome increase in the cost of education. As I walk , or drive as it is so large, the Cornell area all I see is new construction, fancy digs, etc. If colleges were held accountable and reduced theor overhead, education could become affordable again. It's impossible today to work your way through college as I once did-heck, you would have to be an MD!

The last sentence is really interesting. I long ago decided to read these article line for line, often finding inconsistencies, or outright lies. In this case, I can't tell if it's a lie, the truth, or a half truth.
When an author makes such a huge statement - trading student loan interest for women's rights, I would like to know who is agreement with this? Is this a rumor? Was this leaked from a women's rights organization?
Even when I taught 11th grade English, I would never accept this statement in a student's research paper without a source - why should I accept it here?

Thanks to all but the one who did not read notice the clear documentation in the article, that Republicans said they would only agree to continuing the interest rate reduction if Democrats fund it by stripping funding from preventive health care for women.

John, I never said that government should give the money away. My ideal solution is to give students a choice to pay for their education with either money or service.

Obama was talking about this for months? I read CNN regularly and follow multiple other news-sources. Why did I never see it?

I checked the Ed Schultz show and it looks like what House Republicans wanted was to fund this program by making cuts elsewhere. Obama used federal funding of preventative healthcare for women as his example, but that is not the only government-spending to which the Republicans object. What about completely cutting out the ATF and handing its duties to the DEA or some other agency?

The article even says that Republicans want to fund this. They just want the money to come from somewhere other than additional structural deficit.

John, not sure what you mean "Disagree that the gov't should give the money away without insiting on repayment like any other responsibility of being an adult". Studnt loans are prohibited from being discharged through bankrupcy.

Trying to Shed Student Debt

In 2005, Congress prohibited student debt from being discharged through bankruptcy, except in rare cases, because of concerns that many young graduates—who often have no major assets such as a house or a car—would be tempted to walk away from loan obligations.

Tom, I usually agree with you, but in this case you very wrong on one major thing. The Repug/Tea Bagged DO CARE who they hurt this is proven by the fact that they are very very careful never ever to hurt the Profit Margins and Increasing Wealth of those who can afford to buy them their next election. And their choice of just exactly who sacrifices/is sacrificed, for the economy, deficit, debt is done with clinical precision those groups with a history of supporting, volunteering for, donating to, or voting for Democrats, I would add Moderate Repugs but I am fairly sure that they are extinct, are always first under the knife Women, LGBT, the Unions, the young, the old, the poor, minorities, the sick and so on up the Repug political food chain but they never target their top funders, religious, racist, ethnic separatist, homophobic, misogynist allies that support, volunteer and vote for them. Always remember that the Repug/Tea Bagged are always true to their goal for a Theocratic Plutocratic Corporatist America with their particular Christian Sharia as the basis of the US Constitution and US law, Government run with nothing but increasing Corporate/Personal wealth as policy and an enfranchisement/disenfranchisement policy that establishes a permanent Repug-Tea Bagged-Christian Taliban of America-Corporatist voting majority under a Judicial System that they control. You know what I mean an America that is a Fundamentalist Christian/Evangelical copy of Iran on Capitalist steroids.

Didn't get to this until today. Last night I watched an advertisement for one of the big oil companies (doesn't matter which one). The only thing that caught my attention is they recognized the fact that US students are ranked 17th in the world in science and math; 25th overall. I knew that because I teach college students--but I've never seen it advertised before.

I will not be surprised to see government go after student loans. They already have, in one form at least. As of 18 June, this year, graduate students are very likely to not be able to receive federal loans. They're for undergrads only? And that's what's up for grabs, I suppose. Closer and closer to ex-pat status ...

Lloyd, I stand corrected.
