Senate Democrats continue to attempt to craft common sense firearms legislation, designed to keep guns out of the hands of people forbidden to have them, outlaw military weapons that have no valid sporting use, and outlaw huge clips without interfering with the responsible use of firearms. The Republican Party continues to be part of the problem. They need a NOs job.

I think Ted Cruz is an embarrassment to the US Senate and the United States of America. What a total jerk, thanks Diane Feinstein for putting this mindless fool in his place. Though I doubt her words passed through his tin foil hat.

This should be simple - but like everything in the halls of Congress, it has become a strictly partisan issue. I read a few days ago about a 6 month old baby shot 5 times while her father was changing her diaper in the car. It should be also noted that this little girl managed to live even when her mother was shot while pregnant. Dad was killed as well. Now - please tell me again why we don't need some defined and structured laws to address gun violence?

Love the cartoon. And am horrified that it isn't far from the truth in Wayne's World. "A bill to ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines: 10 Democrats voted yes, eight Republicans voted no. A bill to require background checks on buyers in all gun sales, including from private sellers: 10 Democrats voted yes, eight Republicans voted no. A bill to stop illegal trafficking of firearms: 10 Democrats and one Republican voted yes, seven Republicans voted no."

That says all there is to say. It ought be on every Democratic candidates mailings as a sort of postscript, THESE are the people I am running against, do you really want THEM making decisions like this on behalf of the NRA and the gun makers? Or do you want our way of life preserved as does most of the rest of the civilized world?

God bless Rachel Maddow and Senator Dianne Feinstein! "There are 2,271 weapons exempted by their legislation – isn't that enough for the people in the United States?! Do they need a bazooka?!" She is so right – and Petulant Cruz just made himself look stupid – and deeply deeply patronising! Why did the mother of the Sandy Hook shooter buy that assault weapon and ammunition? WHY?! That sounds exceedingly odd! Rachel Maddow is right that the old bill that used to be law would have made the Sandy Hook shootings so much more difficult and less likely – and it should be reintroduced.

very sad but accurate cartoon.......G-d Bless (should she exist) Rachel Maddow and Senator Feinstein (whom I can say I voted for her first election when I still was a great Californian, although I take no responsibility for Reagan)

Thanks Tom for the post, link to the full NY Times article and the Rachel video clip. The Republican need more than a "NOs job" They need to be voted out of office in the Senate and the House so commonsense legislation can be passed! Read, viewed and noted.

I think ALL Liberals should buy tasers & taser every ba$tard RepubliCON in CONgre$$! "I have to ask one thing. What possible need did the shooter’s mother have for an AR-15 Bushmaster and several 30 round banana clips? While I am sensitive to her loss and her pain, why shouldn’t she be responsible for failing to secure that weapon to keep it out of the hands of her dangerous son? In addition, the Republican Party needs to take responsibility for blocking the renewal of the law that would have kept that weapon out of the hands of the shooter." The shooter's mother was the first casualty, so that taught her a lesson..but I certainly agree that Nobody needs 30 round clips for any weapon. Hunters know it's stupid, Stupid's know it's for hunting humans! Period!

Thanks so much for posting these.

i watched Rachel Maddow last night and wound up crying and cursing through the whole description of what happened to those children, all the while cheering Rachel on for giving details that should not only pain, sicken, and horrify but outrage anyone hearing them into protest/action.

It figures Bush let Senator Feinsteins law expire, and I doubt he feels any remorse. Your cartoon should be sent to the republicans! Thanks Tom

M. Scott Peck presents a case study of parents who had one teen son commit suicide with his gun who gave that exact same gun to their other adolescent son for Christmas that year {in one of his bestselling books}...these are objects with meaning beyond measure calling for stronger measures than Congress is even being asked to consider to actually reduce the risk to ordinary statistical target levels.

I wonder if Republican/Teabaggers include Cruz in their list of "up and coming young stars" in the party like they do Lyin' Ryan and Rubio? If so, they have a real problem! And that's an understatement because words fail me!

Rachel Maddow has enumerated new details of the Sandy Hook murders that have emerged as a result of the investigation and they give more creedance to the re-instatement of an assault weapon ban and large magazine ban. No one is proposing taking away all weapons and all ammunition. No one is proposing rescinding the 2nd amendment, no matter what the fool and dangerous NRA lackeys say. So why does a senator like Cruz insist on trying to tie the ban to restricting the 1st and 4th amendments? I wonder if he realises that there are books that various states, Republican/Teabagger states, have banned. Is that not restricting the 1st amendment or is it ok because it was done by a Republican/Teabagger? And wasn't there a great controversy over warrantless searches and surveillance during the Baby Bush reign of terror? Ted Cruz (R-TX) proves himself to be an uneducated grandstanding idiot. TC, I would have put him at a -50 on a scale of 1 to 10!

Rachel Maddow "Everybody says the politics of this are impossible. Why should they be?"

Indeed, why should they be? There are two reasons I can see. The first, Republican/Teabaggers are obstructionists of the greatest magnitude and would see this as obstructing the POTUS. Second, Republican/Teabaggers legislate at the behest of a very few elites, one of which is the NRA who represents the weapons industry.

TC — " While I am sensitive to her loss and her pain, why shouldn’t she be responsible for failing to secure that weapon to keep it out of the hands of her dangerous son? "

Personally, she had no use for such a weapon and so much ammunition and was in my view responsible for the safe storage of the weapon. She failed that responsibilityand as such failed the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary. But she is in no pain since she was the first one that Lanza shot and killed. (unless something has changed that I don't know about.)

The proposed legislation is reasonable and the opposition is banking on fear tactics. Sounds like everything else in DC these days.

Stupid is as stupid does - I'm so tired of these spineless, arrogant, pieces of crap turning every single issue into a major crisis. LaPierre should be in a mental ward somewhere and imo, so should all those 8 Republicans.

I keep asking "my" senators and representatives how they can say they're "pro-life" when they continue to allow massacres like Sandy Hook to happen. Of course, I've never gotten any kind of an explanation about the hypocrisy--don't worry, I'm not holding my breath--just the usual BS about the Second Amendment.

Although . . . Adrian Smith has gone from "As a life member of the NRA . . . I am committed to supporting legislation which protects the constitutional rights of law abiding gun owners" (letter dated Feb. 17, 2011) to "There will be plenty of time for policy debate in the weeks ahead. As we struggle to reconcile this incomprehensible tragedy, now is a time to pray and reflect, and above all provide our unconditional support for the community of Newtown." (Email dated Dec. 21, 2012)--nothing about his NRA affiliations, so maybe he's feeling the heat. But don't worry, Mr. Smith--if you're thinking of trying to hide your affiliation, I'm totally ready to remind people that you're "a life member of the NRA."

Mr. Cruz is another well-educated (Princeton
University, Harvard University, Harvard Law
School) blithering idiot.
I always find it curious that paraders of the
2nd Amendment consistenly fail to state the
"Well regulated militia" part.

Noted w/thanks, Tom. I saw this on Rachel and thought it was a brilliant piece....she was also on Bill Maher's show last night. It seems to me that if all the Dems. are voting in favor of this, and a couple Rep.'s are onboard, too....this should have no problem passing the Senate. Dems have a majority, and adding the numbers up...there should be no filibuster. We just have to keep sending those cards and letters, and making phone calls to our members. Let's ramp this up.

Regarding the "well-regulated militia": I read an article today, (sorry I can't remember where), stating that we should absolutely have a militia created....everyone puts all their guns in a common place that is locked up to the gills, and they will be there for use when deemed necessary. I thought that was an original idea that merits considering....

We do know that Cruz does not have eyes for the White House. Or maybe he thinks if a Kenyan can be president, so too can a Canadian.

When ever possible vote republicans out of office in every state. They are part of the problem and have no solutions to the gun problem in America. They will always be behind the gun lobby. The ones who voted no on these measures are disgusting and despicable and I hope they are voted out of office at the next possible opportunity.

As a Californian I thought Diane's smack down to teabagger Cruz was spot-on! Cruz is nothing more than a mouth piece for the Koch owned Tea Party who are a bunch of misinformed voters willing to vote against thier own best interests. My husband golfs with some of them and they truly believe that our government is out to get their guns and will at some point show up on their door step to collect them. I don't know who is worse, grand standing Congressmen like Cruz or paid for imbicles like LaPierre. Thanks for the great cartoon Tom!

From the article: "A bill to stop illegal trafficking of firearms: 10 Democrats and one Republican voted yes, seven Republicans voted no." How can one possibly vote AGAINST a bill that would stop something that is clearly described as ILLEGAL?

When I see depictions of children carrying guns, all I see are ignorant parents who are perpetuating their ignorance and ensuring that everything that's wrong with America will stay wrong as long as they and their offspring continue to breed. Their children don't "lose" their innocence because they've never been allowed to have their innocence. I wonder how the parents who lost their beloved children at Sandy Hook Elementary School feel about the parents of these gun-toting children when they see such pictures? I'd better stop here or I'll say something that will be flagged as "inappropriate"...
