I love Bill Maher's irreverent humor, even when I disagree with him, so I bring him to you every chance I get. I hope this video will last. Enjoy!

This week was brilliant and Maher had Gover Norquist and Connie Mack agreeing with him on many points.

"Maher is still funny as hell, but I have to disagree on one point. Republican Leaders are not as stupid as they appear. They act that way, because only people that are stupid can be convinced to vote for them."

I think you got it TomCat right here. I can't think of any other explanation. How an actual scientist could believe the world is just 6000 years old absolutely flies right over my head. They can't really believe what they are saying or they'd never have gotten through graduate school, let alone medical school, so the only other option is this is what they need to say to get the average republican voter to vote for them. That is cynicism at its absolute worst. It is that kind of thinking that brought Hitler to power and every wannabe since. These people, despite the creamy layer of Michelle Bachmann on the inside, are batchit crazy and really flipping dangerous. I'm not so sure they aren't the real terrorists. Or at least giving the real ones a run for the money. Then again, maybe extremists of any ilk have more in common with each other than they do with "ordinary" people. I have often thought that if GWB had been born in Saudi Arabia and Bin Laden here, nothing would have changed, 9/11 would have still happened only with GWB on the other side of the pond and Bin Laden here. Up there in that stratosphere without enough oxygen to sustain the brain, they are more alike than different and the only accident is where they were born which forms which brand of crazy they become. But they are still all whacko...

You may have a point there about right wingnuts acting stupid so as to give the fools something with which to identify!
This connects with the piece about trying to get rid of Howard Zinn's teachings: keep the population ignorant, as in feed their stupidity, and you can control the definitions of reality: Those who control the definitions have the power!

Just goes to show that education should not be confused with intelligence. These idiots may be highly educated but they don't know how to apply the knowledge properly. And in these cases, it is the criminal twisting and bastardisation of the knowledge affecting many, many other people that has become their hallmark. They prey on others, like some of the US electorate who are easily lead, sheeple.

To rewrite a well known phrase, 'those that can't do, go into politics.'

Good clip from Maher.

Thanks, Tom, that was a great segment. Glad Bill is educating the public on this. I remember a former Sen...Bill Frist--another doctor, who some years back was part of leadership that brought Congress back from a break to vote on something about Terry Schiavo. Remember that? Truly scary to me that these people get through medical school.

I usually agree with Maher. I wish we had 100 Bernie Sanders in the Senate, then maybe the country could get back to work.

Dear Gene as always great comments, you are always spot on! Am a fan of Bill Maher and always watch the show not only for his ascerbic wit but his guests. Grover Norquist was his usual asinine, stupid self and his utter disgust with Bill's gay guest, had me rolling on the floor. However, as a dyed in the wool feminist I do have an issue with Bill. If you read the list of the top twenty contributors to the production of the show i.e. writers et all it is 80% men. So that fact is a challenge for me, Bill needs to empower more women. Am not in the Hollywood "group" but living in Los Angeles I know there is a plethora of very exceptional women he could employ and the his show does need more of a female input. The show frequently has an all male guest roster but never an all female one.

Oh dear – I wonder if Patty is right – certainly we could tell when George W was doing his' foot in mouths' deliberately by the gleam in his eyes. Do you remember when he did one in front of the Queen at some official function and he got the date of the American Revolution wrong – then the Queen looked at him (we only saw the back of her head as she turned to look at him) and he fell about laughing and said that she 'had given him a look only a mother could give a child' – seems she knew what he was doing!

Lynn is right – there is an immense difference between knowledge and wisdom! Loved Gene's post - absolutely right.

I've loved Bill Maher for quite some time. He puts a smile of my face and reminds us to never turn your back on the Republicans. They can never be trusted but I can trust that Bill will make me laugh.
