Wow! Positive press for Madonna---finally!! Madonna made a ground-breaking trip to Malawi this week - quite literally - as she grabbed a spade to mark the beginning of construction on a new school for girls. Madonna ...and education? Well...ok.

Speaking at the event, she commented: 'Growing up in a privileged life, I took education for granted, but coming to Malawi has taught me a lot of things and I have learnt to appreciate what life gives.'

'People always ask me, 'Why did you choose Malawi?' But I have always said: 'Malawi chose me.'' The trip marks the first return to Malawi for four-year-old Mercy, who was adopted earlier this year, while David was adopted from the country back in 2008.

Guess the "Material Girl" is either looking for the limelight, or really does care about the educational needs of a very poor area!

Her motives probably don't matter much...what DOES matter is her persistence with the idea. If she starts the school and then loses interest--the girls will learn a painful lesson, won't they?

the material girl has enough dough to see this through. She is always reinventing herself they say... so keep on reinventing new ideas to make sure you keep this school a float Madonna. Kudos if you do.

Just hope she doesn't lose interest in the school, other than that . Great Idea Madonna. Thanks Kat.

Some people will do ANYTHING for attention.....Right Madonna?

Well, she won't be running the school....just putting the money up for it. I would hope she hires and watches CLOSELY (unlike Oprah) on how it is run...and if it's safe for the girls to attend.

The world is ready for more girls who are educated (and ambitious!).

As someone who's traveled fairly widely through Africa, I know it's easy to be touched by the plight of Africans. So many factors make life there difficult, if not almost unbearable. Madonna's a mother and I'm going to assume she's had the same reaction I did in Africa--I wish I could help.

The way to help is to educate women. She's got the money. I'm giving her credit for good motives and hoping she sticks with it.

Unfortunately, the prevailing attitude in much of Africa is that "REAL MEN MAKE LOTS OF CHILDREN." Educated women may find a way to change this and make reliable birth control available for their sisters.
