The Houston surgeon pioneered such procedures as heart bypass and has invented medical devices to help heart patients. He's also recognized for developing the idea of battlefield mobile surgical hospitals known as MASH units. Rec'd award 2day!

Article:

The award put DeBakey in the company of inventor Thomas Edison, Army physician Walter Reed, who confirmed yellow fever was transmitted by mosquitoes, and Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine. The president noted that he was awarding DeBakey the honor four decades after another president from Texas, Lyndon Baines Johnson awarded DeBakey the Congressional Medal of Freedom.

"His legacy is the unlost hours with family and friends who are still with us because of his healing touch. His legacy is grandparents who lived to see their grandchildren."

I am shocked and appalled at the mistake the Associated Press made in the title of this article. Michael DeBakey is a great man on many fronts and more than worthy of the many honours he has received. His establishment of MASHs saved countless lives in Vietnam and he was the father of the VA medical system, without which millions of us would not have any medical care. However, as far as I know, he was never on active duty and did nothing to merit the Congressional Medal of Honor. I am sure that he will be as dumbfounded as I am when he sees this title. Shame on you, AP.

Yeah...I'm a Veteran, and the CMA is a military honor. I'm happy that he's getting recognition for his phenomenal work, but usually, someone dies in combat in order to receive the CMA...I only know of one recipient who lived to get one.
