Gardasil targets four strains of the human papillomavirus, also called HPV, a common sexually transmitted virus that causes genital warts and most cases of cervical cancer.

Some consumers, doctors and others have raised questions about Gardasil's safety but the FDA and CDC said the most serious adverse events did not appear linked to the vaccine.

I knew this article would probably bring up a few of those questions? But, if I were the mother of a sexually active daughter, I'd be jumping at the chance to keep her healthy and STD free. Of course, your family doctor should be consulted and advise you first.

In my opinion, these two vaccines are among the most important medical breakthroughs to come along in years! Meningitis is very pervasive among mid-teens to early 20's, and pretty much by the time it's diagnosed, it's fatal. The HPV may not be completely trusted yet in the general public, but that will end in a few years. In either case, it is NOT WORTH taking the chance. I noted some of these comments run the "don't put poison in your body" thought process; have any of you read about the huge outbreaks of measles, mumps, and rubella that used to sweep the nation? Children were left blind, deaf, mentally impaired, and sterile from these episodes; it is idiotic not to have the vaccines given. Just question the doctor about how many and how much of each is given at once. Thanks, Kactus.

Judicial Watch, a public interest group, has closely monitored Gardasil since it was released by creator Merck in 2006, periodically detailing statistics on the numerous side effects users have experienced. The most recent report alleges that the drug has been responsible for 21 deaths and 9,749 adverse reactions, including 78 outbreaks of genital warts and 10 miscarriages.

As daunting as these current statistics are, it seems that even they may be gravely underestimating the health risks associated with using Gardasil. A study by the New England Journal of Medicine claims that only about 10% of drug induced side effects are reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).

Furthermore, FiercePharma.com claims that experts have criticized the actual effectiveness of the cervical cancer vaccine, saying Merck has exaggerated the drug's usefulness.

Despite the alleged dangers of using Garasil and concerns about its actual medical success, Merck is continuing to push the drug into state mandatory vaccine lists and schools.

I'm sorry I am not getting my daughter this shot. Sex education and a lot of it is needed to teach teens about getting disease from to much sexual activity. Parents just are not educating enough about physical and emotional ramifications of early or to much sexual activity.

You know, on the flip side of this many parents don't want to get this shot for their daughter's because they think they will have to start talking about sex. Now that is sad. Anything to avoid talking about responsible choices. But I guess that is left for another article for another day. :-)

Thanks Kathy and Jodie too. Vaccines have an important role in healthcare, but I am on the fence on Gardasil vaccine. I don't feel it should be mandatory. I also have a huge problem with simply giving a vaccine for prevention of a sexually transmitted disease without giving good info on prevention. When I discussed this with my daughters doctor last year they had no information on prevention and she just disregarded my concerns. My feeling is that the message is you give a kid the vaccine without education, that gives them permission to have unsafe sex. I do talk to my daughter, but how many other parents do? If they are going to push this they need to back it up with explicate sex education. The commercials are all flowery and sweet....get the shot and your life will be beautiful, no explanation of reality.

As more women and girls are immunized and people see that it not only doesn't kill them, but less of them get cervical cancer, more of the fence-sitters will accept it as just another vaccine to prevent an unnecessary disease. Permission or not, they're going to have sex. Telling them to 'just say no' will not protect them from anything. And not every sexual act is performed with permission from the girl.
