Carbon dioxide and methane trapped in tiny bubbles of air in ancient ice down to 3,200 metres (10,500 ft) below the surface of Antarctica add 150,000 years of data to climate records stretching back 650,000 years from shallower ice drilling.

I would hate to see the methane starting to rise more, i pray that the permafrost in siberia doesn't thaw too bad this summer. thx Chris! 800,000 years is a long time!

There is a 350.org site that is just getting started. Its based in San Fran.
It says we are at 385 parts of carbon in the air. If we can get back under 350 we will be safe. But if we don't, we can almost forget about what ever civilization we have right now.

I have signed too. Considering how hard we are having to fight for the programs that target concentrations of 450 ppm (yes, allowing us to go even higher that the 385 ppm we have today), it seems rather optismitic to get down to 350 ppm...but that does not mean we should not try :)

Well, I'm no scientist...geologist...meteorologist...whatever....but this weather....the oil/gas madness.....melting ice...dwindling habitats...threatened species....It certainly doesn't take any one of these scientists to know that something's gone very wrong with this tired planet . Thanks for the info , Chris .

I have joined the 350 movement, too, Michael - it is so vital and reasonable, we need to get back to what was not causing temperature rise, it's self-evident. Dear Debbie, your point is excellent!!!
What needs to be done is not technically difficult and it is not expensive.
How can refraining from a holiday-trip by air be anythinh than cheap? How can bringing your own tap-water in a reused bottle be anything than cheap? How can simplifying your life be anything than cheap? etc, etc..
The only thing that is difficult is for a rich person to get truly modest - I guess that's what you, Chris, think of! One has to be really optimistic to believe in converting a rich, spoiled person, didn't already Jesus say something about a camel and a needle's eye... but indeed we should do everything in our power anyway - it's not forbidden to consume less and more consciously, not yet... ;-)

Thanks all for the intrest. Yes, please goin organizations (the 350.org or others of your choice) and write congress...every voice is needed to continue to turn this boat around - there still are many who rather make a fortune today at the expense of tomarrow (when they will be dead and gone)

And - keep planting them trees, shan't we? - but consciously, the new trees should not replace biologically diverse old growth forest, nor rich rainforests, the new trees should only be planted where humans already long ago have destroyed the environment, creating barren land. Protecting our real woods, be cautious of creating tree-plantations with monoculture, etc - but greening cities, deserts, back-yards, road-banks etc, we need recycling paper and planting trees and research on which tree species work well for us when we want to promote global cooling in an environmentally friendly and responsible way! Thinking of albedo, sequestering, soil, growth, ecology and biodiversity, etc...

Thanks Chris!!! And Serge, I feel strongly as you do, I pray for the Arctic region and the whole planet - hope the permafrost stays frosty and the methane in the bottom of the seas and in the earth is not released - and hope we get sky-high taxes on methane-producing meat-factories. Exempting only small family dairy-farms with high organic standards.
Oh, when I see those "crazy trees" whose roots are not supporting them any more... What have we done to the trees!
