Southern California researchers say about 35% of fish they collected in the northern Pacific Ocean in 2008 had plastic in their stomachs. The study shows the troubling effect floating litter is having on marine life, the researchers say.

Again, Humans to blame for this! I see "people" all the time tossing butts out of their car windows, teens tossing cans all over the place, as they are lazy, ignorant, or just don't give a rat's behind! & while they are finding fish have ingested plastic, etc., we don't even know yet what the long term effects it will have on fish, etc..

Let me give an example of of apathy & ignorance. I live in a condo complex & w all have 2 receptacles for A, recyclables & B, for all other trash.
Now, we put out our regular trash each week & every other week we put out the twice as large recyclable trash. On Tuesday past, it was a regular trash day, & I took a walk to get an idea of how many have their own agendas, re: the trash/recyclable system.

I had seen it before, but never around the entire complex; boy I was surprised, & angered! So many of these residents have cardboard pieces piled high, or full boxes(supposed to be broken down), plastic milk jugs(supposed to be in bags), empty 12/24 cartons for sodas, wood, a few pieces of aluminum, etc ! These morons, most with adequate space in their garages or the recyc. bin itself, can't wait 7 days to keep all that material out of the landfill ?! I mean, just leave it in the recyc. bin, or in the corner, but wait until it's the proper day! I cannot understand their ignorance &/or apathy that they must get that out of their garage - God forbid they keep in until the proper day, or it might throw off their lame little lives!
If I was in power of the City, I would make it a lot tougher - send put notices, paint it on the bins, etc. that if the driver sees any obvious recyc material going out NOT on the proper day, they receive a notice of a fine, 25.00 for the first offense & up 25.00 each subsequent offense! The reason for the recycling programs are to A, re-use certain materials, & B, to keep as much of those materials out of our landfills! Yet so many just in the complex alone, feel they are above policies, R'S & R's to have to participate in these tree hugging activities - so easy, you have a green & blue barrel, side by side !

Sorry for the rant but these are seemingly intelligent adults & they are reminded each month in the newsletters!

You may want to consider getting your local news to do a story about waiting until proper time to dispose of recycle-able items and point out that people don't realize how much pollution they're contributing to the ocean; hence, fish. It may be worth a try. TY Craig for this eye-opener.
