A new analysis by University of Georgia associate professor Barry Hollander finds that between 1998 and 2006, Americans became increasingly polarized in their news-gathering habits. After examining five national Pew Center for the People and the Press during that time period, Hollander concluded that the public now lives in “a huge echo chamber of attitudes and ideas.”

The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Political Insider reports:

In 1998, 27 percent of Republicans and 25 percent of Democrats tuned in regularly to Atlanta-based CNN. Eight years later, the number of Democrats had risen to 29 percent.

But the number of Republicans who tuned in to CNN had shrunk to 19 percent. Gosh, where do you think they went?

Over the same period, Fox News’ share of Republican viewers jumped from 14 to 36 percent.

Hollander also notes that conservatives “dramatically dropped news sources that they perceive as being biased against their position.” Evidently, this included C-SPAN, which also saw a dramatic drop in conservative viewers.

These findings are similar to a Norman Lear Center/Zogby International poll from November 2007, which found that 22 percent of conservatives say they “never” enjoy entertainment that reflects values other than their own, as opposed to just 7 percent of liberals. Fox News was also the “most politically divisive TV channel,” with 70 percent of conservatives and just 3 percent of liberals watching it daily.

But too much Fox News may be bad news for conservatives. An April 2007 Pew Research Study survey found that viewers of the conservative Fox News channel had the lowest knowledge of national and international affairs

Isn't Fox the station that said planes hit the Towers and there were Weapons of Mass distruction in Iraq? Personally the only USA stations I watch/listen to are the ones that carry the "soaps", and if Canadian Stations pick them up that means I get Canadian "slanted" of USA news. Therefor I take everything with a grain of salt, and consider the USA Govt. follies a continuing "Soap Ophra/Oprah"........

Media giants pursue strategies of owning clusters of newspapers, radio, and television stations in the same market to increase potential revenue. The FCC raised the limits of the audience any single company may reach from 35 to 45 percent, but Congress dropped the percentage back to 39 as a compromise; however, the percentages are not enforced.

Rupert Murdock, News Corporation ownership....Will Freak You Out...take a deep breath for here is part as it devours more ....

News Corporation (often abbreviated to News Corp) (NYSE: NWS, NYSE: NWSa, ASX:NWS, LSE: NCRA) is the world's largest media conglomerate company by market capitalization.[2][3] The company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer is RUPERT MURDOCK and the President and Chief Operating Officer is Peter Chernin.
News Corporation is a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Australian Securities Exchange and as a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange. Formerly incorporated in South Australia, the company was re-incorporated in the United States state of Delaware after a majority of shareholders approved the move on November 12, 2004.

News Corporation's headquarters is at 1211 Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Ave.), in New York City, in the newer 1960s-1970s corridor of the Rockefeller Center complex.

Revenue for the year ended June 30, 2007 was US$28.655 billion with an operating income of US$4.452 billion. Almost 70% of the company's sales come from its US businesses.

[edit] History
News Corporation was created in 1980 by Rupert Murdoch as a holding company for News Limited. News Limited was created by MURDOCK from the assets he inherited in 1952 following the death of his father, Sir Keith Murdoch, and subsequent expansion. The main asset left to him was ownership of the Adelaide News.

In 1986 and 1987, News Corp (through subsidiary News International) moved to adjust the production process of its British newspapers, over which the printing unions had long maintained a highly restrictive grip.[4] A number of senior Australian media moguls were brought into Murdoch's powerhouse, including John Dux, who was managing director of the South China Morning Post. This led to a confrontation with the printing unions NGA and SOGAT. The move of News International's London operation to Wapping in the East End resulted in nightly battles outside the new plant. Delivery vans and depots were frequently and violently attacked.[5] Ultimately the unions capitulated.

[edit] Moving into the United States
News Corp made its first acquisition in the United States in 1973, when it purchased the San Antonio Express-News. Soon afterwards it founded the National Star, a supermarket tabloid, and in 1976 it purchased the New York Post. In 1981 News Corp bought half the movie studio 20th Century Fox, buying the other half in 1984. In 1985 News Corp announced it was buying the Metromedia group of stations, setting the stage for the launch of a fourth U.S. broadcast network. On September 4, 1985, MURDOCK became a naturalized citizen to satisfy the legal requirement that only United States citizens could own American television stations. In 1986, the Metromedia deal closed, and the Fox Broadcasting Company was launched. This network, known on-screen as "Fox", can now be picked up in over 96% of U.S. households.

In 1987 News Corp bought The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd. in Australia, the company that RUPERT MURDOCK's father had once managed. By 1992, News Corp had amassed huge debts, which forced it to sell many of the American magazine interests it had acquired in the mid-1980s. Much of this debt came from its stake in the Sky Television satellite network in the UK, which incurred massive losses in its early years of operation, which (like many of its business interests) was heavily subsidized with profits from its other holdings until it was able to force rival satellite operator British Satellite Broadcasting to accept a merger on its terms in 1990. (The merged company, BSkyB has dominated the British pay-TV market since.)

In 1995, the Fox network became the object of scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) when it was alleged that its Australian base made MURDOCK'S ownership of Fox illegal. The FCC, however, ruled in MURDOCK'S favor, stating that his ownership of Fox was in the public's best interests. It was also noted that the stations themselves were owned by a separate company whose chief shareholder was U.S. citizen MURDOCK, although nearly all of the stations' equity was controlled by News Corp. In the same year News Corp announced a deal with MCI Communications to develop a major news website as well as funding a CONSERVATIVE news magazine, The Weekly Standard. In the same year, News Corp launched the Foxtel pay television network in Australia in a partnership with Telstra and Publishing and Broadcasting Limited.

In 1996, Fox established the Fox News Channel, a 24-hour cable news station

In 1999, News Corp significantly expanded its music holdings in Australia by acquiring the controlling share in a leading Australian based label, Michael Gudinski's Mushroom Records; merging it with already held Festival Records to create Festival Mushroom Records (FMR). Both Festival and FMR were managed by RUPERT MURDOCK'S son JAMES MURDOCK for several years.

In late 2003, News Corp acquired a 34% stake in Hughes DirecTV, from General Motors for Electronics, operator of the largest American satellite TV system, US$6 billion.

In 2007 News Corporation reached an agreement to purchase Dow Jones, publishers of the Wall Street Journal for an estimated $5.6 billion. The corporation on 15 October 2007 spun off a business news channel from Fox News - Fox Business News.[6] The channel's lawyers were "reviewing all of the fine details of the contract" between Dow Jones and CNBC, said Alexis Glick, Fox Business News's vice president of business news and the channel's morning anchor. But, she added, "we will actively use" the other Dow Jones properties.[7] "...this new channel is a bit tedious. Somehow, business is more interesting when treated in a business-like way", commented Rob Carrick in 16 October's Toronto Globe and Mail.[8]

[edit] Shareholders
In August 2005 the Murdoch family owned only about 29% of the company. However, nearly all of these shares were voting shares, and RUPERT MURDOCK retained effective control of the company. Nonetheless, John Malone of Liberty Media had built up a large stake, with about half of the shares being voting shares. Therefore, in November 2006, News Corporation announced its intention to transfer its 38.5 per cent managing interest in DirecTV Group to John Malone's Liberty Media; in return it bought back Liberty's 16.3% shares in News Corp., giving MURDOCK tighter control of the latter firm.[1] MURDOCK sold 17.5 million class A shares in December 2007[9]
Saudi prince Al-Waleed bin Talal who is an investing tycoon and chairman of the Kingdom Holding Company said in an interview with Charlie Rose that he had about a 6-7% stake in News Corp.[10][11]

It's no wonder of the repug numbers who watch Faux News, birds of a feather stick together after all. I stopped watching any of their affiliates years ago after I became disgusted with the sensationalizing of news stories for viewership. This seems to be their trademark, using high emotion to report news to get their viewers to react. Sleazy tactics, not what I expect from a news report. Just give me the facts, with no emotion and allow ME to decide!
IMO, those who watch Faux don't want to think for themselves, allowing others to decide for them.
Thanx Robert for this reminder of how important it is to get your news from reliable sources!

I am a conservative. I get all news - the Democrats, Libertarians, Communists, Rush Limbaugh, enviros, Republicans, everyone.

Here is my public statement: I own stock in Public Service Enterprise Group, a nuclear firm. PSEG had an accident at a nuclear power plant in Illinois. Senator Barack Obama then introduced some bills regulating the nuclear industry. Subsequently, PSEG donated campaign money to Senator Obama, and he weakened his bills.

I ask anyone who lives near the five nuclear power plants owned by PSEG if they experience any problems or fears. I promise work with you.

Fox doesn't show news,it shows extreme right wing propaganda.Rupert Murdoch has an agenda to wipe away anything that stands in the way of unregulated free markets. His channels, spew out slanted 'news' items, told only from his own ultra-rightist perspective. In this agenda, patriotism is used as a means of subjagation, covert racism is a constant, and those who seek a fairer world are stigmatised as enemies. His lumpen henchmen, bully anyone who expresses an alternative opinion, and democracy is trampled underfoot.
Fox/Sky etc own many media outlets throughout the world, and Murdoch has the ear of senior government figures in many countries. His corporations are the biggest threat to democracy that the world has seen, since Stalin and Hitler.
Here in the UK,his Sun newspaper (an awful tabloid, aimed at ingratiating itself to a working class readership),has influenced elections, influenced government policy, and undermined notions of fairplay, community and decency.Stories are told of the rottenness of trade unionists, attacks on ethnic minorities, gay people, social welfare etc are a constant. My own parents read this hideous paper, and like many people,do not consider editorial perspective, ownership ,bias etc when interpreting what they read. They repeat the lies, half truths, and one sided reports, they read .It makes me fearful, and sad.

Kevin Martin and the 4 Republicans controlling the FCC have and are doing everything in their power to further consolidation and more media monopolization. Even with the tremendous outpouring of protests against more monopolizion the FCC arrogantly voted in favor of it. Now the Senate Commerce Committee has said no....enough is enough. But of course this will have to pass the House and Senate..which will probably be hard to do with the lobbyists having so many Congressmen in their back pockets.

Senate Commerce Committee says no to more media consolidation

Common Cause commends the Senate Commerce Committee for voting unanimously to pass a resolution disapproving a Federal Communications Commission rule that could clear the way for more media consolidation.

“Both Republicans and Democrats came together today to send a message to the FCC that greater media consolidation is the wrong direction for this country,” said Common Cause President Bob Edgar. “Our media functions as the source of information the public uses to determine how to vote, how to participate in government and when to hold elected officials accountable. With limited sources of information because of consolidation, the public will not get the information it needs, when it needs it.”

The resolution would essentially veto the FCC’s new rules that allow for greater media consolidation in many of America’s media markets. Sponsored by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND), the resolution of disapproval (Senate Joint Resolution 28) was introduced in March.

Common Cause now urges its passage in both the full House and Senate.

Faux News does NOT practice journalism,

This news does not surprise me at all.
The sheeple have to have SOMETHING to
watch!

In response to this totalitarian consolidation,I have set up a petition on my (United Kingdom)governments website. For any democratic and fairminded Brit's out there,it is at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Balanced-Press/ The petition concerns setting up a committee to look at democratising/widening press access. Our press is overwhelmingly slanted to the right, and other views are being squeezed out.It is only a free press,to billionaires/mega-rich megolamaniacs, who can buy or create a printing press, employ thousands, then set the agenda and appoint editors.Where is the freedom?..or does that word just mean freedom to do as they tell us,these days?
