Although President Obama 'pledges' not to take advantage of this newly signed National Defense legislation for himself, which clearly threatens many rights and freedoms of its citizens, then why would he empower his successors to take future action??

You should be concerned, as I and many other U.S. citizens are now becoming aware!!!

"Senator Levin told Congress recently that under the original wording of the National Defense Authorization Act, American citizens were excluded from the provision that allowed for detention. Once Obama's officials saw the text though, says Levin, 'the administration asked us to remove the language which says that US citizens and lawful residents would not be subject to this section.'

Specifically, the section that Obama asked to be reworded was Section 1031 of the NDAA FY2012, which says that 'any person who has committed a belligerent act' could be held indefinitely.

'It was the administration that asked us to remove the very language which we had in the bill which passed the committee...we removed it at the request of the administration,' said Levin. 'It was the administration which asked us to remove the very language the absence of which is now objected to.'"

proof Obama wanted indefinite detention for Americans as well

Why start feeling bad now, the US locks up more people (by far) than any other country (close to 2 million). That may make you feel more safe, or less, if you consider that all of our chances of ending up in prison someday have increased exponentially.

Too bad the GOP/Teabaggers in Congress were so all for this bill...they could have stopped it long before 'they' sent it to the President to sign....

Anyone wonder what not signing this bill 'add on' /'rider' and all, would have meant to the other items on it ? Just curious....

Yes Jae, but it is still up to your illustrious "Saint" Obama (the one you claim you never stick up for or back, lol) to veto, based on the good of the American people! Funny, I thought that's what a president is supposed to do. But as usual, you ALWAYS find a way to excuse him or blame "Dubya," as you always call Bush.

Jae A. (321)
Wednesday January 4, 2012, 7:31 pm
So that's you comment as to the topic Andy______,just a personal one of my opinion ?

Anyway...No I do not 'support Obama' but I don't disapprove of all that he does if that is what you mean by my 'excuse' .

As I ask above due to being curious about it...I'll ask you directly..do you Andy____ have any thoughts on how his not signing it would effect other items on that same bill ?

A president is suppose to go with the peoples choice..who are represented by Congress persons from various states. The GOP had the votes...[apparently that is what 'their people' wanted him to sign] to pass it and ..then.. the President signed it...if you had read comments, mine in particular before you comment about me personally on this thread, you would have realized who passed the bill for him to sign in the first place...and that he did as you do know ,if nothing else, that he did indeed...sign it.. based on the votes needed to pass the bill in Congress. Not that I am in favor of him doing so but he isn't a prone to veto bills... as Dubya was, just because he personally doesn't like them...maybe it's because of that.. for the 'people' thing ..you mentioned...which was there according to the GOP/TeaBaggers in Congress votes...and that is what he apparently based his signing it on..Maybe not, but that is a possible. So if you have nothing more to say about me personally I will comment no farther, unless you wish to direct another comment about me personally or on the topic even...in my direction..then I will return and reply..it's the proper thing to do, don't ya know. :-)

I also posted several news stories on this as well. Far as I'm concerned BOTH Parties has sold us to hell in a hand basket. I'm seriously checking out the Justice Party. I'm not endorsing, just offering it for your own consideration. Thus far what is being presented seems pretty good to me. I will not continue to support either of these two parties with my vote as that would only be sending a message I condone their policies....I don't.
HOME PAGE FOR THE JUSTICE PARTY
THE JUSTICE PARTY ON DEMOCRACY NOW
I had also placed a story about NDAA concerning the Congress who voted for it's approval. I've kept the names of the TRAITORS and the true Patriots who didn't sign for it. I will still vote for individuals in the two parties IF they haven't signed my rights away along with other things I'll see how they stand on it.
NDAA CONGRESS SIGNED THEIR OWN ARREST WARRENTS
Finally please sign the PETITION to stand up to this NDAA.
HE SIGNED IT WE FIGHT IT
My loyalties are not to a Party but to the Country and the Human Rights of each individual. BOTH Parties have failed this Country in my opinion, we got the un-Patriotic Patriot Act in 2001 under Bush, the Military Commissions Act of 2006 under Bush, now this disaster that put the final nail in the dissolving of our Human Rights with the NDAA signed by Obama. We've been sold out by BOTH Presidents and most members of both parties, I'm so done with both of them. As a life long registered Independent I do not hesitate to take my attention and vote elsewhere.

Whoa now wait a minute Jae. You said, President Bush was prone to vetoing bills? What country are you from, certainly not the US under President Bush. He allowed too many bills to escape his veto pen, but then he had a solid Democratic congress that would have over ridden him anyway.

Obama has done nothing to help this country get back to work and he is aiming at more distruction in 2012 if he should push even only half of his 40,000 nonsense bills of regulations on the American small businessperson. Obama is one sick socialist and is doing all in his power to distroy the US Constitution.

as soon as obama thinks people aren't looking he will start locking people up that push against him. just watch. he's already working outside of the congress to get rid of our gun rights. he went around the senate to appoint people today. obama will take any short cut to get what he wants no matter how many laws he "bends". the man is dangerous. vote him out. while you're at it vote both the house and senate members that are up for election out, both parties. it's time to take back our country.

New horrible bill coming down the pike. HR 3166 Enemy Expatriation Act

This will take away your US citizenship if you are "engaging in or supporting hostilities against the United States".

In other words, if you attempt to fight government tyranny, they will strip you of your citizenship and you will have no constitutional rights.

This is the next step towards government tyranny after Obama just signed the NDAA.

Email your Representatives right now!!

H.R. 3166: Enemy Expatriation Act @ Gov't Track U.S.

A bill in the U.S. Congress (HR 3166): To add engaging in or supporting hostilities against the United States to the list of acts for which United States nationals would lose their nationality.

We had better be careful ourselves here on Care2, because activists could now be considered as an 'enemy of the state'!?!?

What's Next???

I really don't want to know, but I am watching with both eyes open anyways!!

Would you tell me what type of person would elevate an agenda of protecting a Chicago politician, such as President Barack Obama, rather than in the protecting the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights???

That's right, an unscrupulous un-American traitor ...

Of course in my personal opinion, because there are obviously some advocates of Fascism and Socialist moles that appear to be attempting to undermine the very foundation of the United States of America.

No paranoia here ... Just obvious facts that can no longer be ignored ...

Not sorry if I offend the perpetrators and their heinous agenda against the U.S. of A.!!

Obama could have refused to sign. The fall-out would have been no vacation and a call back of Congress. It is purely disgusting that both parties have themselves in mind before country!

Obama's latest move scares me more. To start a "dialogue" with the Taliban, he is willing to negotiate the release of taliban prisoners from GTMO! Yep, the same insane killers that vow to continue killing Americans when released. That would surely be Treason.

But we SHOULD know....we should know VERY CLEARLY what they are doing. Obama called it transparancey, is one of the things that the people had an issue with on the Bush Administration. Signing documents on New Years Eve is the same tactics used on the Republican side. Is why I say, they are both different sides of the same coin. Both are selling us down the river.

Is the problem with the American people, they don't question, they don't seem to be concerned, they accept all the bullcrap, and therefore they get the bullcrap laid onto them. You don't WAIT until ife become intolerable to then stand up, but that is what this Country has done. Even now, too many are still to complacent, thinking someone else is going to do the hard work for them.

So we should know EXACTLY what is being done, explained in clear words how this is going to be implement and what it will do or not do for or against each individual citizen. But they don't tell you this, or they lie about it, because the Government and MOST of our so called Leaders have been bought out by the Corporations and the Banksters.

They pat each other on the bank, the Corporate Elite and the Officials in Government. One shouldn't have to have so much money from the Corporations to win an election but that is what has happened, then the Corporation OWN the one who is in office. So the ones in Washington do the bidding of the ones who OWN them.....the ones with the money who put them there.

We need Election Reform......but do you truly think those who are already there are going to change things?

Election Reform is critical.......

I suggest for starters you push for any of those things that you find, to call and petition. Join groups that are standing up to the flooding of too much money into our Government from private hands. We have a Plutocracy now, our Republic is no more, and the NDAA is just one more way that the ELITES....the Corporations.....Oil Barons.....Banksters, have pulled one over and are now holding you hostage. If they don't like what you say, you can be "disappeared"......this is very dangerous.

So get with the program people, it's all hands on deck, do something, join something, call, write, tell others, get the electronic voting machines OUT of your local communities, they are rigged. If you don't think so watch the movie HACKING DEMOCRACY.

So as you say, "we will never know" then you have resigned your life and your offspring to serfdom at best, slavery at worst.

Your right Dee, and I agree with you one hundred percent. What we are seeing now is a transition from one form of government to another. We cannot sit idle and observe the events unfold, nor can we just vote for a lesser evil and hope that all of this goes away. Another words, we are reliving the events that our ancestors dealt with so long ago. They did not accept it, and neither should we.

Thank you Mindy for taking the time to get this information out. Keep up the good work!

@Jae: How much longer has your nose grown since the last statement in which you say that you do not "support" Obama? On almost every other post, you remind us that you voted for him the first time around, and that you will absolutely do so again! (I fear for people who stand next to you when you make those comments, as some innocent person may be struck by lightning.) So let's not play that game. And there are many here that are regular posters, other than myself, that can attest to that.

Another game you can stop playing is the name thing. This is about the 20th time that you state you don't know who I am. BS! The inside of my profile has never changed, and you know it all too well, because it is full of stuff you hate, like quotes from the Bible, and "crazyrightwingnutters" (which you should apply for a phrase copyright to,) like Jesus Christ. I have told you in the past that I have my profile labeled as such, because I am ill due to a traumatic brain injury I received after a car accident a couple of years ago, and cannot reply to personal e-mails. Sometimes I have to inactivate it, because my Care mail hasn't worked for 3 months, and I can't send or reply to messages, among other things. And when it has been labeled Inactive, I have signed my name after the comment I have left on posts. So you can stop with the Andy_____ blank line crap! My name is Andrea O. Funny for someone who wants to know full names, you only use Jae A. Would you like my blood type also? Perhaps I am a secret spy for the GOP too!

I find it quite amazing, that you, who talk about being sooo against bullying, (even going so far as to have an anti-bullying sticker on your profile page,) have no trouble calling Pink and Marilynn, and all others who don't bow down and worship your wise teachings, every name in the book. But perhaps the good people at "Webster's Dictionary" would gladly change the very defintion of bullying for you. Because the last time I checked, calling people like Marilynn a drug addict, alcholic, or "brain dead" person with "dementia," goes way over and above bullying! And anyone who doesn't agree that, that behavior is over the top unacceptable, needs to seek immediate professional help, for their ethics are surely warped.

You have quite the "Superman Syndrome" Jae, and I have yet to see you state that you are wrong on any subject, at all, at any time. What is your secret? Why are you not sharing your secrets with the world, making movies, or writing worldwide best sellers, that of course would go straight to #1! Oh, Swami Jae, all-knowing and all-seeing, please run on the 2012 Presidential ticket!

The whole indefinite detention thing is a legal and, frankly, moral mess. For purposes of normal law-enforcement, obviously it is wrong. However, the executive branch also runs the military, so what about taking people as prisoners of war? I know these seem to be two clearly separate issues, but these days with the nature of modern wars, they are not. Where do Americans draw the line between a criminal gang and an enemy militia operating within U.S. borders? What clear line is there between normal crime and terrorism? This has been at the heart of quite a few debates.

In war, I certainly see no problem with taking prisoners and holding them until the end of the conflict. The practical alternatives, killing them or simply failing to fight the enemy effectively, are rather less tasteful, I think. Without clear negotiating leaders on the other side who might surrender, how do we define the end of the conflict? Again, this question is far from closed. What happens, then, if the U.S. seeks to take prisoners in its war against decentralized non-state actors with their non-uniformed combatants, and what are the alternatives if it ties its hands with its own laws and cannot? I think there is a strong moral argument in favourr of the NDAA here.

On the other hand, there is the obvious opportunity to abuse power.

To really look at the specific case more carefully, I would need to know what part of the 926-page document grants this authorization: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112s1867es/pdf/BILLS-112s1867es.pdf
The threat of abusing power may not be as horrible as it seems. If this is done through the military, then a soldier may refuse to follow orders on the grounds that he believes them to be illegal. The entire chain of command would become a set of checks and balances, unless the president decides to carry out a shady arrest himself, which would be political suicide.

On the broader issue, no leader should claim power for himself that he would not feel comfortable seeing in the hands of the opponent he opposes most strongly who might be his successor. "Give no power to Lincoln which you would not see passed down to Nixon." This has been a problem throughout the Obama regime. Imagine the power of a mobster who controls the ATF (which has discretionary power to close gun-shops if they refuse to follow its orders, even when they want to refuse to sell guns to shady figures, as was relevant for Operation Fast and Furious). Imagine the power of a Wall-Street-bought politician in control of the new consumer-protection agency, or an oil-guy who controls the EPA. How about someone who really does not care about the poor taking over as the next Healthcare czar through ObamaCare? As regulatory power has expanded and new regulators arose, the message that Obama never learned this lesson has been clear from the start.

Fact check, mSHILL. Not true.

Hey MindySHILL!
Watch as disappointed republican protestors publicly list their grievances and demands directly to republicans.
Why does Dick Army have to rent republicans and bus them to a teabagger rally and have them hold tax signs when their taxes are lowest in history?
A: Because the republican voter is too god damned lazy to get involved with the monsters they've turned on the USA. Republicans give one voting session, to vote for who they don't "hate", every two years and that's IT!

Are Republicans redistributing massive amounts of money to the top 1%?

Between all the debates, the interviews, and the campaign ads - doesn't it seem like the Republicans candidates only care about helping rich people? That's because that IS all they care about. According to a report by the Citizens for Tax Justice - which examined all the tax cut plans proposed by the candidates - the average tax cut for the 1% is 270 times greater than the tax cuts being proposed for the middle class. Not only that - by redistributing massive amounts of money to the very top - Republicans will add enormous amounts of money to our national debt - ranging between $6.6 trillion and $18 trillion over the next decade. In other words - the Republicans are proposing an economic plan that will bankrupt this nation just so millionaires and billionaires can get even wealthier.
