San Francisco is the first U.S. city set to ban plastic bags and Los Angeles City Council followed suit, approving a ban, effective July 2010. Last week, they also tacked on a 25-cent fee on paper or plastic bags--including biodegradable versions--after...

Taxing people for using plastic bags in this horrible economy is just irresponsible. I'm as for a clean environment as anyone, but this is only going to hurt the poor even more who probably have a hard enough time affording the groceries. Why not educate people on the benefits of resuable bags and/or recycling plastic bags and the dangers of littering plastic bags instead? Oh that's right that would cost $ and the govt. would rather take our money then spend what they have wisely.

i think the reason many dont buy reusable bags is the thought of paying for them when something else is right there and free. If they had to pay for the bags, i think you would be superised how many can suddenly see the light.

I use the canvas/reusable bags when I have been shopping for the past year. I was amazed at the response from different cashiers. Some are grinning when I come in the line while others cuss me--only the ones that know me on a personal basis, rest assured, BUT they are the ones that I am more likely to give the talk to about reusing things and making the stores pay less in the long run for bags I am not using.

No one has to go out and buy a $30+ top of the line canvas bag, just take what bags you got last time at the market and reuse it for pete's sake. One of the stores around here used to offer a credit towards your order when you reused the bags.....I always forgot to tell them so I never got the credit :( And yes, I do save them for small trash can liners and STILL have some even though I haven't gotten any for over a year!!

Here in Holland we already have tax on plastic bags in the supermarkets and bakeries. And I think it´s a good initiative of San Francisco.

All shops should just do what Aldi and Target in Australia have done and that is just stop giving out plastic bags .

Or, stores could charge for bags the way they did in British Colombia, Canada when we lived there in the early nineties!

5 cents (Canadian) for a paper bag (saves more trees)
3 cents (Canadian) for a plastic bag

Each stores also provides a recycle bin where customers can take the bags others brought in and won't use again and they don't hav eto pay for the bags retrieved from the recycle barrel.
