The million trees program should be cut to 999,999. Or maybe the city could just move the tree it planted outside Marion D. Smith's home on 11th St. in Park Slope on Friday.

If they told her they wouldn't plant a tree there, they shouldn't. Now they are going to anyway and it could be one that will cause that woman twice as much work with the fruit falling. What may I ask are they thinking? Just sitting here shaking my head...
Thanks Ca.

Actually we are inviting disaster ourselves by not stopping the cutting trees and most of our needs are based on woody material as in our homes most of objects, furniture's etc. are made of woods. Peoples demanding them in a big quantity among us. So we may also responsible for all this in little quantity. On the other hand Government is not making any implementing policy regarding this and corruption is there a lot.

The comments I read after the article on the Brooklyn articles page were a bit harsh on Smith. Have any of them stopped to think that besides being told a tree would not be planted there (a reasonable request, if you ask me) - that perhaps a tree in that spot is a reminder of the death of her husband? For some a tree is a great tribute to a loved one who has passed away - but for this lady the tree could be associated with the day he died, a painful memory. It is devastating when a spouse dies, even more devastating if you have lived so so many years together.

As a widow I would love a tree or trees planted in his honor. Its important to plant trees that are not allergy causing. And trees add such beauty to ones surroundings. Sacramento is known as the tree city. And here where it gets 100* for weeks on end, having shade trees helps lower my cooling costs. And in its great to see birds nesting.

A new tree means new life. The old tree died. The old husband died. New babies are being born. New trees are being planted. Life goes on and on. New life will sweep away the fallen leaves after Mrs. Smith is no longer able to do it. A new cycle is about to begin.

It seems, Christoph, that she is already unable to do it. If the city is going to do this, against the will of the person living closest to it, they should pay for its upkeep. Yes, death and rebirth are a part of the cycle of life, but I don't think that Mrs. Smith wants to hasten her death and rebirth any too soon by having to take care of a plant she didn't want.. She didn't want the tree, she was told that there wouldn't be a tree, and so they shouldn't have put one there. There are probably plenty of locations where the residents want a tree near them. Why not just move it to another place? The City of New York can afford it!
