Leonard Peltier: The Writer

The Author

Since his imprisonment began in 1976, Leonard Peltier has depended most on the written word to communicate with family, friends, and supporters. In this way, he records his thoughts, concerns, and emotions; and discusses Native issues, American and international politics, and strategies to win his freedom. Over the years, he has honed his writing skills and developed a unique style. Although he has evolved as a writer, Leonard Peltier has not lost his "voice"—or his passion for freedom and the survival of his People.

Leonard often writes articles for publication. The topics vary, but usually touch on his life experiences, current events or trends of most concern to him and, of course, the specifics of his case.

My Life is My Sun Dance

In 1999, Leonard Peltier's memoir was published—"Prison Writings: My Life Is My Sun Dance" (St. Martin's Press).

The work received wide acclaim and attracted the attention of luminaries such as Britain's Queen Elizabeth. As a result, the European Parliament approved a resolution calling for Peltier to be freed and France's former First Lady Danielle Mitterand—president of the French human rights organization, France Libertés—also called for the release of Leonard Peltier.

Editor Harvey Arden said, "Leonard Peltier's powerful memoir, a Native American spiritual testament, will shake the conscience of the nation... and the world. It's a flaming arrow aimed at the circled wagons of American injustice."

Archbishop Desmond Tutu calls it: "A deeply moving and very disturbing story of a gross miscarriage of justice and an eloquent "cri de coeur" of Native Americans for redress and to be regarded as human beings with inalienable rights guaranteed under the United States Constitution… We pray that it does not fall on deaf ears. America owes it to herself."

Exactly Betsy. A miscarriage of justice and very concerted effort by those involved from the beginning to keep Peltier in prison till he dies. There are real murders that have served less time. This is CYA politics by the FBI.

Rosemary... thank you for the information
WHICH I WAS CERTAIN OF TO EXIST
as the "groups out there INVESTED in continuing particularly their INVESTED INTERESTS of GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION
as they LABOR to INCITE VIOLATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS CONTINUALLY
and attempt to CONTEND WITH JUSTICE
as they CONTEND under the pretext that they presently "get away with it" as they contnd presently to abide "within the law" ALBIET A CORRUPTED "law" THAT WILL BE THROWN DOWN AND THROWN OUT!

THESE TYPES OF GROUPS UNDERMINE THE INTEGRITY OF THE USA!

WE ALL DESERVE, TO SEE... JUSTICE CARRIED OUT! NOT MISCARRIAGES OF JUSTICE!
TO DENY ANY CITIZEN... ALL CITIZENS...

THAT OUR USA PRISON SYSTEMS BE INVESTIGATED... FOR VIOLENCE

THAT OUR USA POLICE FORCES BE INVESTIGATED FOR CORRUPTED COPS AND THEY BE FOUND AND DETAINED AND CHARGED AND INPRISONED...

THAT OUR OTHER BRANCHES OF USA GOVERNMENT WHERE THE CORRUPTED ARE ATTEMPTING TO HIDE THEMSELVES IN THEIR ATTEMPT "of miscarriages of POWER" WE DESERVE THE INVESTIGATIONS OF THEM>>>THEIR INCARCERATIONS>REINVESTIGATION OF ALL PRISON TERMS/OF EVERY CASE EVER HELD...

Thank you Ge. I've read quite a bit of his writings on the net - he writes beautifully and from the depths of his soul. A travesty of justice. The hate mongering in this world is so sad. I send this man love and light, and courage, and apologise to him on behalf of those who insist that he stays behind bars. Shame on us.

The Case of Leonard Peltier and the "Incident" (?!!!) at Pine Ridge/Wounded Knee (all of them) has polarized not only your country but the World, into two camps, one for, one against. But then, the whole issue of the 'savages' having the nerve!! to fight back when their lands were invaded and their people slaughtered, has been around for over 400 years. (the "how dare they fight back" mentality) In the fifties, my brothers and I would boo when the 'cavalry came over the hill" at the Saturday Matinee . Didn't win us friends... My brother spent 16 years as a humanitarian aid worker in Africa, saw the aftermath of the Rwanda massacre... has no pretentions of believing that ANY group has a monopoly on vicious prejudice and murder. America has proved that many times, like the fight for desegregation of Blacks during the 50's/60's..(he went down to help and came back alive). Somehow, tho' the Native People of Turtle Island (North America) are still viewed by so many people, as something beneath human. When they talk about the unemployment in Black communities, which is awful, they don't mention the 85% rate of unemployment on many Reserves, like Pine Ridge, one of the poorest areas in the world. The fact that this ANTI-Peltier - read Native - site exists and is taken seriously by so many indicates the depth of racism towards Natives. If it was against any race or ethnic group, black, Jewish, etc., It would be hauled off the internet and somebody would be sent to jail. But basically, anything can be said about native people and it is accepted or dismissed. MY country won't sign the UN bill for Indigenous RIghts(Right Wing government) and this is shameful to me. What is Americas position regarding this Human Rights Bill? I believe, with great sadness in my soul, that Leonard Peltier will die in jail (or murdered outside of it), a martyr to Native People (unless they have sold out to the Right) and that the illegitimate POWER of the FBI will continue unchallenged, to the great detriment of your country, and the world. In the Spirit of Crazy Horse - May his mountain monument be finished and stand forever looking out over the Land where his people died. (no doubt this statement will put me on some List of your Homeland Security or FBI.....)
