TO PRIME MINISTER ABBOTT AND AUSTRALIAN POLITICIANS: Please support laws that will give ALL Australians the freedom to marry. Support full marriage equality at federal, state, and territory level. Don't try to stop it with new laws or legal challenges.

BACKGROUND:

1. Tony Abbott studied to be a catholic priest before recently becoming Prime Minister of Australia. He, in no way, represents the wishes of the majority of Australians, who have no objection whatever to gay marriage... He will not allow the senators in his own party a conscience vote on the matter.... He is a bigot of the first water and anti-gay to the max.

2. Tony Abbott has threatened to do everything he can to stop marriage equality. He wants to stop the ACT (an Australian state) passing a law that could allow everyone to marry the person they love before Christmas.

If the ACT gives everyone the right to marry, New South Wales and South Australia are set to follow. This could kick off unstoppable momentum for marriage across Australia. Or it might start a huge legal and political battle led by the Prime Minister.

Tony Abbott could decide not to get in the way. His party -- and even his own family -- are showing more and more support for marriage equality. A huge petition showing massive popular support could help show Tony Abbott it's pointless to fight equality.

Abbott is preparing for a big fight. He knows that Labor and the Greens plan to pass the ACT's marriage equality law. If he goes ahead with his plan to fight equality, he could try an an expensive legal challenge in the High Court, to try to get the Court to say that only his government can make marriage laws.

The good news is that expert lawyers say the ACT is likely to win a legal battle, and Tony Abbott knows it. Together, we could show Abbott that equality is inevitable and this fight is not worth it.

All Out members around the world have been busy on equal marriage. Earlier this year, more than 325,000 members signed a petition, donated for newspaper ads and gathered in the streets to help win in France. And together, we helped win the votes for marriage in three states in the USA.

All Out's not just about marriage, it's about building a world where everyone is free and equal. And in just two years, there are now more than 1.8 million of us. Imagine what we can achieve for Australia together.

If we can grow this petition to 50,000 signatures by Monday, we'll deliver it to Tony Abbott's office in Parliament House. Will you sign now?

Thanks for going All Out.

Andre, Hayley, Jeremy, Marie and the rest of the All Out team.

PS: If Tony Abbott does decides to put up a fight, there will be lots we can do. We could email and call our representatives directly, place high profile adverts, and chip in for a legal defense if it's needed. But now's our chance to stop Tony Abbott before he gets started. Sign the petition.

PPS: All Out members are also working together to stop the Abbott government from sending lesbian, gay, bi and trans refugees to a place where it's a crime to be gay. In case you missed it you can sign that petition too, to help make Australia a safe haven again: https://www.allout.org/australian-home

It is absolutely DEPLORABLE to deny a human being the legal right to marry who they love. All human beings, no matter what race, creed, religion are hurt by this. Our tax systems, health benefits, adoption and foster care systems, and general standing is effected by the ability to marry.

I gladly signed. There are many things I'm critical of in the USA but we are doing much better when it comes to our rights for the GLBT Community. I just saw a report on Russia today that is passing more and more laws against the gays and will soon be ripping children out of their parents arms and homes, saying it's better they live in an orphanage than with the parent(s) who love them. We are on the same planet but in so many ways we are eons different from each other when it comes to Human Rights and which Human Rights are allowed.

Thanks David..signed with pleasure...neither of our major parties want this to happen..and the States did threaten to go it alone..the ACT (which is a Territory and where a Capital is) has done just that but legal action has been taken by our Federal Government...not surprising..

Signed and noted. Thank you David and to Ed for forwarding the petition. I have a different take on marriage equality. Don't laugh. Why should heteros like myself be the only ones to find out that sometimes love is not enough and some marriage don't work out. Everyone who wants to marry should be able to find out for themselves. Please don't throw any bricks. LOL

Thanks to all who have, or will, sign this important human rights petition... Live and let live!

It's a shame we have to resort to petitions like this in our enlightened age of 2013 AD... Our dear 'leader', Prime Minister Tony Abbott, is a creature sill living in the magic and myths of 2013 BC... I hope this petition will help to make him aware that he is accountable to the majority of Australians who condone gay marriage, not his mythical god in the sky.

One small step for mankind, one large step for gay rights?

Neither the Labor Party (Gillard) or the Liberal/National Party(Abbott) wanted this legislation to go through when it was debated even though 80% of the population are for it..and the reason is both Parties are controlled by their Right Wing Factions..(the Faceless men as they are called). Gillard's replacement Kevin Rudd changed the rules on electing a leader which has come into place now...giving the Rank& File a say not just the Factions.

Update:

ACT legalises same-sex marriage

GAY marriage has been legalised in the ACT in an Australian first.

But the new laws, expected to see the first same-sex unions by December, are already headed for a High Court challenge by the Abbott Government
.
ABBOTT'S GAY SISTER ENGAGED

The ACT Legislature today passed the Marriage Equality Same Sex Act 2013 by 9 votes to 8 with the support of the Labor Government and its one Greens member.

Opposed by the Liberals, it is the first time such laws have been passed by an Australian Government.

As a large continent of supporters watched from the public gallery, Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said she was sorry a federal threat hung over this bill, but she would not put off the joy of people's weddings.
