I signed the other day. Thanks Rose. I just can't believe that the Pincipal is getting support from some people on his ill conceived punishment. I'm against violence and fighting in schools but I'm also against these ridiculous creative punishments which aren't really meant to teach the offenders a lesson or give them any insight but to just humiliate them and create entertainment for others. Yes, they boys could've chosen suspension but the principal could've chosen to have a brain and common sense and thought up something more appropriate.

Signed, noted and passed on to firends. This behaviour from anyone is bad enough but from a Principal to do this to students is unconscionable!

he went a step to far with the hand holding and allowing the homophobic slurs but the public humiliation punsihement was a good one. he could have stopped the slurs cold by passing out identical punishment to those who particpated.

Absolutely absurd! Petition signed, but it is far to mild, it should be calling for the principal's removal.

NO! ok people what this principal did was great and not homophobic at all! Those boys are 2 thugs who where fighting in the school yard, he gave them the option of suspension or sit in the yard holding hands. They chose the latter.

It is NOT homophobic, just humiliating and I honestly doubt any of the students there thought of it as an "attack on gays" just as 2 thugs getting the humiliation right back at them. I also doubt that those boys will be fighting anyone else in the near future after having to hold a person you hates hand in front of your entire school.

Good job to the principle for standing up to thugs and getting creative in ways to prevent fighting!

Sure wouldn't want to "come out" at that school. How does one reinvigorate a school anyhow? Maybe a month with no homework would do the job.
If the principal was trying to get cooperation (strongly doubt that), he could have had the two boys work on a project together, like planting a tree on school grounds or giving the custodian a break and picking up trash cans or any job that would require one to hold, one to carry something. Even a three legged bag race that would require coordination and teamwork. That would be fun to watch, no pride hurt.

@ Kara C. - I agree with you completely. I am rapidly losing respect for Care2 contributors as they seem incapable of thinking a situation through. I wonder what the response would have been if the writer had put a positive angle on the story. Pretty sure everyone would have played follow my leader and agreed that the punishment was a good idea. These two young twerps accepted the punishment so they obviously weren't to fazed by it.
Sorry I am not prepared to support these petitions just so someone can earn a few points.

Action taken. Surely this man should be fired for his inappropraite actions towards students. He is causing bullying so how can the school board allow this to go on?

They should be punished by shaking hands and make excuses for the fight. It's not right to let them be exposed to all the other students.

What kind of braindead staff is Westwood High School hiring?
He should be fired for encouraging bullying while the rest of the world is trying to eliminate it.
What an idiot!
